In preparation for surgery to reduce horribly disfiguring scarring to this poor child's face, balloons were surgically places under patches of good skin so they could be stretched far enough to cover the areas where the surgery will take place.

The story is heartbreaking, too.

Also, in spots, really fucking wrong:
Although Youssif has gradually warmed up to Grossman -- especially when compared with his attitude toward hospitals and doctors back home in Iraq where he was never given any pain medication -- at times it has taken four people to hold Youssif down during his weekly inflations. But his father says that the doctor has always been kind and understanding.

It's been nearly three months since CNN.com first reported on Youssif, who was attacked by masked men outside his Baghdad home in January, doused in gas and set on fire. CNN.com users, the burn center and the Children's Burn Foundation came to his aid, with more than $300,000 raised for his treatment.
ftw

I fucking hate people. This kid looks like a total bro.
― HI DERE, Thursday, 29 November 2007 15:52 (eighteen years ago)
the surgery is painful, the cruelty belongs to the shitheads who burned him.

It is a cruel irony that the road to getting the scars removed can make the patient look so much worse; I was going to quote the part of the article where he scared some other kids on the playground but I didn't want people to think I was making fun of him.

So, I'm beginning to suspect that lidocaine doesn't work very well on me? For the second time, having a minor surgery done, I was able to feel a distinct and painful feeling of cutting, pulling and tearing. It wasn't like scream my head off painful but it was pain, and it was not exactly fun. I googled a little and read that people with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome sometimes have this experience, but I clearly don't have EDS.
