Is there a reason we need both words?

extant has a slight note of 'remaining' as opposed to 'existing'

I think there's a connotation of "continuing to survive where other stuff in its field has disappeared" to "extant" that "existent" doesn't have.

Ok, I thought that might have something to do with it. I think I have heard "extant" being misused a lot.
