Belgrade (BEG) wins for me, if only because I got locked in a bathroom stall there for nearly a half an hour. Faulty lock. No one who came into the bathroom spoke any English, nor seemed to pay any attention to my embarrassed cries for help. At a certain point I started to think that there were many rational scenarios in which I would never get out.

Just 'cause I got out doesn't mean I like the airport.

a few of these for similar reasons but others for their own very special ones - like CDG, this is the big paris airport? are you kidding me? your duty free selection basically sucks and your layout is wack and I can't even SMOKE? What country is this? LAX is just a shit layout, ditto O'Hare, Cincinnati is just the most depressing airport I ever had to layover in, Atlanta is ...in Atlanta, ditto DFW/San Antonio (never good news if you have to go to Texas), Nashville is ugly, and so on and so forth.

I like small regional airports that have like 12 gates and a bar & grill with Sam on tap. I don't ask for much. I don't even hate Dulles anymore.

OTOH my vote for best airport ever is still Frankfurt. Munich I think is probably a close second.

As a teen,I checked Ohio off of my visited-states list after landing at the Cincinnati airport. Later I found out that the airport is actually in Covington, Ky.

it's basically an a-frame with no food, no air conditioning, two bathrooms and faux-leather furniture of the sort that sticks unpleasantly to your flesh. it does feature a polynesian uke trio greeting you, though.

MEM/Corky's -- point taken about being trucked in once a day, but it's still in the 99th percentile of airport food.

SNA -- point taken about the decor, but access/egress/congestion much less of a hassle than LAX.

ORD gets my vote -- two major hubs jammed into too small a space, terminal amenities too few/far between, and if there's a thunderstorm anywhere in the midwest, you're gonna get delayed. (Dis)honorable mention to anyplace you have to ride shuttle cars between terminals (e.g. ATL, DFW).

Greenville-Spartanburg (GSP?) airport in SC was kinda cool. They had no commercial dining or shopping; the only restaurant was operated by the airport. There's a nicely landscaped outdoor courtyard you can access from the terminal and it's all well-lit, mid-century swinging modern style. A+++

Security was generally much more annoying at Heathrow.

I'm a bit biased because they wouldn't let me queue up for fast checkin because I didn't have a print-out of my booking details. I (stupidly, it turns out) didn't think I needed one because it would be on the computer, but they have some security guards that go round the queue and demand a print-out of it before you get to the desk with the computers.

Waiting for 40 minutes on a tiled floor in one huge line for Passport Control at Gatwick is terrible, esp. since you have to walk 15 endless minutes to get there. Of course, it could be worse in other places (but the Passport Control people are even worse than the long walk & then endless snaking line). What makes it most infuriating is that UK/EU citizens barely have to wait at all, in comparison.

I got lucky with baggage at both ends this time.

Passport control at LAX was OK too, once the US citizens' queue had gone down a bit they opened it up to anyone (much to the chagrin of some Americans who'd been to the toilet before queuing up, haha).

We've now finally realised we can queue up in each others' respective queues, as long as we're travelling together.

Mexico City's airport is way more interesting than lots of what's been discussed so far, e.g. ORD or DFW. If you arrive in the domestic terminal there are a ton of local shops selling local-ish things, as opposed to another newsstand or Sunglass Hut or whatever. And the international terminal is as comfortable as your typical US hub.

About the only good experience flying into ORD was when a guy on my flight had a seizure, and so we got rapid clearance to land; what was normally a 45 minute descent took 10, tops. LHR, familiarity breeds contempt. I don't think I have landed there without being stacked. No where to sit without paying for a meal, too many shops, you have to wind round them from security to get the the gates there is no other way. Endless taxiing. Huge queues for bag drop, long waits for reclaim. It sucks big and I am there twice a month.

CDG is good if you are in 2C-2F, 2A and 2B are a zoo and 1 was designed by a dope fiend with an escalator fetish.

WAW is (or possibly was) the most overcrowded, soviet era airport dealing with budget airline crowds. I think they must have opened the new buildings now.

Berlin TXL is completely unsuitable for modern security purposes.

ORL has the weirdest people flow system, there is no vertical separation, you keep having to stop for cross overs of people arriving or departing if you are on the other track. (Mainland European airports don't separate arriving passengers and departing ones and don't seem to have problems security wise, immigration happens by the jetway)

Good airports: ZRH (which might just be my favorite airport anywhere) and PDX a close second.

I spent the night once in BOS because I had a 5:30am flight and didn't feel like paying for a hotel that I would only use for a couple hours. Surprisingly comfortable... I liked the little sky bridge in between terminals - I camped out there with my laptop and watched movies all night. The power outlets are in a useful place too unlike ONT which has them on the wall with no seating.

This. Went through LAX four times in January. Never a problem. Eight terminals (or however many it is they have) seems to be working for them. Oreposterous to compare it to Heathrow or Gatwick, both of which are enormous and filthy. I think it's a three-way tie between Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted for worst airport for me. Stansted would be OK, but its always bedlam and in the middle of fucking nowhere.

SFO is probably my favourite. Small for an international airport, always seems to be pretty quiet and the BART right into the terminal is a treat. Mumbai is hilarious and awesome.

The BA terminal at JFK has to have the worst immigration line in the states. SO glad I ran for it from the plane last time. Only three desks for nationals and three for foreigners, out of over forty open. Two planes arrived at once. By the time I got to the front the line was backed up round the zigzags and back up the ramp to the gates. People were still way back down the line by the time I got my bags and left. (Bagage comes out really quickly there for whatever reason).

Also no pre-security catering there other than a subway and a Peets coffee in arrivals. The subway gave me food poisoning on the way home in january.

Heathrow still sucks the worst though. The tents are now routine for all school holidays. My dad was there last night and said it took over an hour to get through even the priority business class security line.

In mid November, I'm flying to St. Louis from Seattle to take part in a musical thing. I'm using Southwest for all legs of the trip.

Here's my schedule. Each way has one layover
Sunday, Nov 9th: morning to evening : SEA -> DEN -> STL
Friday, Nov 14th: afternoon to evening : STL -> MDW -> SEA

I'm also checking a hard case containing an electric guitar.

In which ways will I get fucked over? (This was the standout cheapest and affordable option.)

Mackro, I quite enjoyed St. Louis when I visited a year and a half ago. Have fun. Take some pics of those wonderful old Munsters-like houses (and share them please)! I took some great pics of those but lost them in my computer crash. Lafayette Park and the houses around it made a deep impression on me. (Though I suppose for you it's not the right time of year to be outdoors) There was also a bar right near there that specialized in chocolate drinks and chocolate desserts. Can't remember what it was called, but I thought it was really cool. They had pics/quotes from Alice In Wonderland for their bathrooms.

Also, some woman had left her bra neatly laid over the side of one of the garbage cans in the park. I thought that was funny. Like passion just took her over right there and then!

I don't remember any problems with the airport, there, but I don't believe I checked any baggage. Can't remember if I had a layover at another airport or not.

ONT is my local airport. I loved going there as a kid, as the gates were at ground-level and only semi-enclosed. You'd have to walk across part of the runway to get to the plane (no jetways) and they'd wheel out those stairs. It always felt very presidential. Since they "modernized" in the in the mid 90s and built terminals 2 & 4, it kind of sucks. I still have a soft spot for it. On par w/ FNT.

Bimble, thank you! I'll be staying more or less in the downtown area. I have to rehearse at the Powell Symphony Hall, then head west to the Pageant Theater for the soundcheck and actual performance, so I won't be going outside the city limits or anything. And Powell Symphony Hall looks like it's just walking distance from the arches.

As for the weather, I checked it out and apparently November is a really good weather month for St. Louis! Then again, I like sunny and cold.
