Sedaris a genius? At best he's just, like, funny-ish, in that pretty plumb-average essay-as-standup kind of way. Not to mention which I've grown completely unable to stand the whole "I am so gay" schtick he used to flog so hard. "Boy was I one gay kid! I had a lisp and everything! Isn't that so funny? In kindergarten we would all dress up as what we wanted to be when we grew up and all the other kids would dress up as astronauts and firemen but I dressed up as Liza Minelli! Because isn't that so funny, I was Gay-Stereotype Child!" Don't get me wrong, he's really funny, I'm not even going to try and pretend that his stuff's not as normal satisfying-funny as yr average Stand-Up Essay but a genius? NPR personal-essay humor is so not genius.

the only way he could have been gayer is if he'd been singing into a dildo.
― chicago kevin, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 18:39 (seventeen years ago)
ffs people if i'd seen that independently i'd have thought of him as a very talented singer and a born showman, not a 'gay'. it's a great little clip!
― Just got offed, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:01 (seventeen years ago)

lol "channeling Kogan, 20 year-old belts it out on I Love Everything"
srsly though i don't see much wrong with it! sure he'll be bullied, but he knows it, he must do?
― Just got offed, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:06 (seventeen years ago)
Louis OTM - that doesn't particularly gay, and even if it is, so what? It's a 7 year old kid, for chrissakes! The accompanying text is horrible:
Feast your eyes and ears on 7-year-old Anthony, whose parents are doing their best to see that their son's considerable singing talent morphs him into some horrifying amalgamation of Haley Joel Osment and Clay Aiken. This morning, Anthony made his television debut on the Today Show, singing "Let It Snow" in the kind of voice that would have completely blown us away if we weren't so creeped out by his striking resemblance to Liza Minnelli (minus the drugs, extra weight and makeup). As it happens, his absolutely adorable dimples really don't compensate for the fact that he's doing a spot-on imitation of an ecstatic Chorus Line wannabe in his very first high school musical. Even Ann Curry looks weirded out, and that's saying something. Who in God's name gave him that hair-fluffing-move and will someone make sure they're never again allowed near children?
The implication here is that it's okay to teach your kid how perform and put him into talent show, but dear god if you teach him some slightly effeminate gestures that might make some narrow-minded people see him as gay, then the kid should be taken away from them! Maybe they should've taught him to perform like Motley Crue or something, in proper masculine manner, like real manly seven-year-old boys should?
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:10 (seventeen years ago)
"doesn't look particularly gay"
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:11 (seventeen years ago)
i think the implication is that one shouldn't be consciously trying to gender/sexual-identity imprint their child at the wee age of 7
― remy bean, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:16 (seventeen years ago)
actually i'm wrong, that is douchily written
I think people who don't think that's transvestite-level imprinting are operating from a 100% different set of assumptions than I am.
― Laurel, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:17 (seventeen years ago)
I'd love to live in world where ideologies concerning gender and sexuality weren't so strong, that even 7 year old kids need to be put into neat little brackets, and if they do something that crosses the line a bit, there must be something weird with that.
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:18 (seventeen years ago)
(xxx-post)
Tuomas, the kid is aping a style that is definitely gay in sense and sensibility. Broadway musicals, it could be argued, are in fact a gay art form.
Also, are you really offended by that text?
― dally, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:18 (seventeen years ago)
And anyway, Tuomas, they couldn't have taught him to do Motley Crue because it ain't in his blood the way the gay is. Don't you think there's some kind of genetic component to sexual preference?
― dally, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:20 (seventeen years ago)
Well yeah, because it argues that aping Broadway musicals is a) automatically gay, and b) somehow wrong for a 7 year old boy.
(x-post)
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:20 (seventeen years ago)
It's wrong for anyone, actually, but we can't control what consenting adults do behind the closed doors of Broadway theatres.
― Laurel, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:21 (seventeen years ago)
i don't think anybody is seriously bracketing the kid as DEFINITE FUTURE HOMOSEXUAL at all! but his actions and performance totally fit into a certain gay performative vernacular.

it is totally unsurprising to me that you wouldn't get why this is weird and creepy
― max, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:22 (seventeen years ago)
I don't know why some people become gay and some don't, but I really don't think you can read it from a 7 year old kid, based on a performance like that.
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:22 (seventeen years ago)
please read what i just wrote: nobody is saying he is really gay, but that performance is like rufus wainwright in a room full of sequined dicks gay.
― remy bean, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:22 (seventeen years ago)
I've seen gayer. There's not enough diva hand. ROFL @ that wink though.

you guys were doing a great job of ablating the troll until Louis and Tuomas showed up
― El Tomboto, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:25 (seventeen years ago)
The head caress was just...wow...wrong...it's PRECISELY because he's 7 that aping adult gendered or even overtly sexualized behaviors is A BAD IDEA.
― Laurel, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:26 (seventeen years ago)
It becomes a little weird and creepy if every single one of his moves was preprogrammed and forced into him without his understanding why. Perhaps I'm overestimating the 7 year-old comprehension. He can still sing like a mofo.
― Just got offed, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:26 (seventeen years ago)
This kid couldn't be any gayer if he was being carried around in a handbag by Paris Hilton.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:28 (seventeen years ago)
Actually someone please Photoshop that.
Kids at that age are all head voice, I find adult-voice P!O!P! stylings really off-putting to begin with. And I'm not even STARTING on the catalog of adult gestures/postures/attitudes.
― Laurel, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:29 (seventeen years ago)
Hmm, well, maybe my deep and abiding love of singing flamboyantly "female" songs at karaoke is distorting my perspective of this. It's possible to find enjoyment and escapism through camp without actually being gay. My error, perhaps, is in thinking this is OK for someone so young to participate in.
― Just got offed, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 19:31 (seventeen years ago)

It's not the singing or the belting, people, it's the obviously coached gestures and simpering at the camera in a way that wouldn't even be healthy for Liza Minelli (as already observed), much less a young child who doesn't know what the behaviors he's copying are based on. His body language, the hipshakes, the head tilts, they are very very creepy.

I'm not trolling. I can't think of anyone who came out later who surprised me all that much. I think there's likely a major genetic component to sexual preference. I also think there's also a chance there's less coercion going on here than we think. Obviously he likes what he's doing; don't you remember theater kids? The ones doing community theater? Sure, maybe one or two had a pushy stage mother, but I think the majority of them were just drawn to it by dint of disposition.

― nummy num kraut jizz goodness (the table is the table), Sunday, 11 September 2011 05:33 (thirteen years ago)
yeah this thread would benefit from the standard british use of the term "camp"
the kid's performance is camp, but that doesn't make him gay
but folks in this thread seem to want to use the word "gay" when they mean "camp" (an aesthetic category of failed seriousness with majorly gay aura/associations, but not in fact restricted to homosexual persons or acts or the adult sexuality baggage of that term), and in the process all kinds of weird equations fly around
ugh semantics, but still, I think the distinction would have helped this thread.
That, or reading this book
