Sedaris a genius? At best he's just, like, funny-ish, in that pretty plumb-average essay-as-standup kind of way. Not to mention which I've grown completely unable to stand the whole "I am so gay" schtick he used to flog so hard. "Boy was I one gay kid! I had a lisp and everything! Isn't that so funny? Louis OTM - that doesn't particularly gay, and even if it is, so what? It's a 7 year old kid, for chrissakes! The accompanying text is horrible:

Maybe they should've taught him to perform like Motley Crue or something, in proper masculine manner, like real manly seven-year-old boys should?

Tuomas, the kid is aping a style that is definitely gay in sense and sensibility. Broadway musicals, it could be argued, are in fact a gay art form.

i don't think anybody is seriously bracketing the kid as DEFINITE FUTURE HOMOSEXUAL at all! but his actions and performance totally fit into a certain gay performative vernacular.

Kids at that age are all head voice, I find adult-voice P!O!P! stylings really off-putting to begin with. And I'm not even STARTING on the catalog of adult gestures/postures/attitudes.

Hmm, well, maybe my deep and abiding love of singing flamboyantly "female" songs at karaoke is distorting my perspective of this. It's possible to find enjoyment and escapism through camp without actually being gay. My error, perhaps, is in thinking this is OK for someone so young to participate in.

I'm not trolling. I can't think of anyone who came out later who surprised me all that much. I think there's likely a major genetic component to sexual preference. I also think there's also a chance there's less coercion going on here than we think. Obviously he likes what he's doing; don't you remember theater kids? The ones doing community theater? Sure, maybe one or two had a pushy stage mother, but I think the majority of them were just drawn to it by dint of disposition.

And quite a few gay folks will tell you they always knew.
