Will this be a case of each side of the Atlantic not knowing half of what I'm talking about?

Kind of one of the reasons I ask is, I've always fondly remembered Carol Burnett from my childhood, and she's beloved and all, and of course she had funny spots. But have you tried to watch an old ep of The Carol Burnett show lately? It can be v v painful. I spent a lot of the time thinking, somebody shoot Tim Conway.

Burnett is (OK, was) a great clown. You have a point about her henchmen, possibly.
No, I dunno who Tate is.

Did Carol Burnett write much or create her own material? I only know her as a comedic actor.
― Aimless, Thursday, 23 May 2013 21:36 (twelve years ago)
re the TV show, as w/ most classic variety hours (of which hers was pretty much the last) she had a large writing staff, including some guys who also wrote Mel Brooks films (Rudy DeLuca), and the budding Barry Levinson. She likely had plenty of input.
She started out in nightclubs where I assume she wrote much of the material -- maybe this?

This classic has finally appeared (I think it helps a little if you know the Crawford movie; the sketch really should be in b&w):

He was a finalist for the title role in the TV series version of Batman, but lost the role to Adam West.lol at this

^^His screentest is on the DVD box. West later claimed he won the role because his jaw was sqaurer than Waggoner's.

No Martin Ritt thread...Was surprised by how mediocre (sometimes worse) Pete 'n' Tillie is. Seems like a film that should have been a layup for Ritt. Like Cactus Flower, I have to believe the stuff that was hopelessly dated must have made people wince in 1972, too. Classic case of misguidedly reining in and wasting a hugely successful television comedian/nne (like Mary Tyler Moore in Ordinary People). I'll have to read Kael's review tomorrow.

My recollection is that Burnett kind of underplayed the role, perhaps in an attempt to ground the dated corniness of the jokes. And/or to be more of a contrast with Matthau's character.
Do you really think MTM was wasted in Ordinary People?
― Josefa, Monday, 28 April 2025 12:00 (three months ago)
speaking of MTM, a friend of mine is currently in Palm Springs for a work trip and has befriended Joyce Bulifant, still going strong at 87 (and I would imagine one of the last survivors of the MTM show?)
