Singer-Songwriter ID: uh...

A few months back I read an article/review on some singer-songwriter and make a mental note to seek out his music. Frustratingly, I forgot the artist's name, and my searches on google and amg haven't turned up anything helpful. For what it's worth, here's what I remember about the guy:

-he's American
-he plays guitar and sings
-presumably he falls into the folkie/americana camp
-he has a nice baritone voice, comparable to Fred Neil but maybe a little more gravelly
-he was in his 40s or 50s (i.e. kinda old) when he started recording music
-he recorded his debut in the mid to late '90s, and he's released at least a few more albums since then
-on the cover of his live album is a photo of a brightly-lit café at night. Oddly, it reminds me (in terms of lighting more than anything else) of the cover art for Fred Neil's Bleecker & Macdougal

This is all fairly vague, I know...but if anything rings a bell, I'd be thankful if you could throw out some names for me to look into.
