Tentative Plan: ILX Compilation Album: Discussion

I was thinking...a lot of people in ILX make music of some kind or another. It would be great to make a compilation CD-R. Here is how I think this could work: 1) People send a tape or CD of a song they would like to put on a compilation to me. I can't do MP3's at the mo, though I might be able to do so soon. All songs would be accepted, and all styles welcome and encouraged, as well any level of musical ability.

2) After a closing date of say the end of May. I put all the songs onto a CD-R and send a copy to everyone who submitted a song. If other people who did not submit ask for one, I'm sure this wouldn't be a problem.

3) As I say, all songs would be accepted. But, I think I would set a limit of minimum length = 15 seconds and maximum = 9 minutes.

If you think this a good idea and would like to contribute, indicate here. Any logistical ideas etc. or also welcome.

jel --, Saturday, 9 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Excellent idea, of course; I was thinking of this myself, though I'm not a musician. But wouldn't it be fun if we could make this a legit release of some kind? Might be a good way to draw in more people. :-)

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 9 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A legit release would be cool. So, if anyone knows of any record labels that would be willing to take on such a responsibility, let us know!

jel --, Saturday, 9 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I can handle mp3s easily enough as well, so I'm all about helping with this thing. Finding a label to handle it -- well, there's always American Patchwork. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 9 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmmm, yes: I believe there are three label owners on IL*, aren't there?

I would be more than happy to work up a song for such a thing. Meaning a proper song, unlike last time.

Nitsuh, Saturday, 9 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gerard Cosloy's posted once or twice. We have a answer! ;-)

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 9 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

At Rebecca's suggestion I will be mixing up a glitchcore drum'n'bass bootleg in a area version of ILE Double Live, with me on harmonica (apparently).

Graham, Saturday, 9 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

that would be funny if all of our songs were horrible.

chaki, Saturday, 9 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This is a fantastic idea. I'd buy one.

Unfortunately, I'm not musician, but perhaps I could contribute some artwork?

Kim, Saturday, 9 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Shore. Group effort! :-) I could write the liner notes...

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 9 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Can we all review it and say it's "life-affirming".

I want to make an electro cover of Heroin by VU, but I can't play any instruments so it may never happen.

Ronan, Saturday, 9 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm certainly in. Too many songs and not enough places to send 'em.

electric sound of jim, Saturday, 9 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Rock! Oh by the way, Jim, tell me about the Lucksmiths. I've just ordered some discs and they sound promising enough.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 9 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, I'm not jim, but think catchy pop tunes by some australian kids ( strong australian accents=classic.) "a good kind of nervous"=good! i'm not usually one for cutesy pop stuff, but they melt my rock'n'roll heart.

geeta, Saturday, 9 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm in too, except that i think all my extant music was destroyed in yet another harddrive crash. i shall have to poll friends to see if they have any copies.

jess, Saturday, 9 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm in.

sundar subramanian, Saturday, 9 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

this is very good idea. i will consult duckling and other bandmates.

di, Saturday, 9 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am probably not in, unless I either develop some talent or lose what little shame I have left in the next 6 weeks, but I'd love a copy.

Rebecca, Saturday, 9 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh flippin' stinky heck, I'm in.

Nitsuh... you better be in, too. Your statscock hip hop song rocked the skills like a chester.

Brian MacDonald, Saturday, 9 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I will stifle my tendency to make fun of myself and offer a track for such an endeavor. Someone's gonna have to go shopping for a 4-track (or a fancy soundcard) (and a microphone).

Daver, Sunday, 10 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

About the artwork, this is just a test thing as I banged it up in about five minutes from this old sketch I had around - so I could possibly do something like this or just as easily something totally different. I like it of course, but I'm not sure that style really suits this place? I was thinking of possibly more cartoonish, something funny, something more cleanly graphic maybe... Any suggestions?

Second idea I had. How about having the back with the track listing emulate the layout/look of the New Answers page? Nerdish I know, hehe

Kim, Sunday, 10 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Darn it, that link isn't working is it? They must have just changed that - I'll try something else momentarily...

Kim, Sunday, 10 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

may i contribute a song?

chaki, Sunday, 10 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

can i too?

duane, Sunday, 10 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This is going to be the worst record ever!

N., Sunday, 10 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Some booster you are!

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 10 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, Nick - to double the crapitude, I was thinking of covering a BEATLES song!

Daver, Sunday, 10 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Now you're talking.

N., Sunday, 10 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No Nick, the worst album ever is & will always be "xtrmntr"

Please count me in on this projeckt. Whoever is dealing w/thee mechanicks ov it. pls mail me off list w/submission details at yr convenience etc.

Norman Phay, Sunday, 10 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm well in- if it happens I'll try and convince Mr Steve to let us give a song- otherwise you'll have to make do with one of me side- projects, ugh.

i)The Lucksmiths are bloody fantastic! ii)Rebecca MUST do a song, for some crazed reason I'm convinced that she's a musical genius.

emil.y, Sunday, 10 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

even worse than U2, Nick?

i'm trying to compose a soundtrack for my animated student film, if i'm not too embarrassed at the results, you can have it. right now, all i've got is enough loops to satisfy toucan sam. there's the "eno loop" (from "an ending/ascent") , the "spooky loop" (sounds like the o'rourke idm album), the "coldloop" (constructed from the sound of a strummed guitar and the first half-second of coldplay's "don't panic" recorded off the tv), the "hard loop" (a kind of semi-harsh jungle, big-beat thing) and the "piano loop" (self explanantory), amongst others. all i need now is a tune. (btw, "tuareg" is a great free drum loop creator, and a small download.)

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Sunday, 10 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

even worse than U2, Nick?

BRANE.. HURTS... MUST STOP....

N., Sunday, 10 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(Thanks for the responses so far! There should be more details about this next week, or those who have said they want to contribute will be e-mailed)

jel --, Sunday, 10 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If you're still wondering Ned, The Lucksmiths are a bit like Hefner (in that acoustic trio sort of way) except from sunnier climes and considerably happier. Very pop. They are superstars in their hometown. We might be touring with them soon! Yay!

electric sound of jim, Sunday, 10 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Clarity is mine, thanks!

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 10 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

me and duckling want in.

di, Sunday, 10 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i would really like to do some music for this and also no dis to kim but LET ME DO THE ART PLEASE.

ethan, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Seems to me there could be more than one piece of art included, yes?

Ned Raggett, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i would like to do some linear notes

anthony, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

can't...think...of un-nedlike joke...to make...

ethan, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

fuck you ethan

anthony, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wot emily says. I will be sending you 120 MINUTE ROCK MASTERPIECE by mailpots yaga.

Steve.n., Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This sounds MENTAL. Also, the Lucksmiths don't sound like Hefner. Heh heh. I will do a GRATE song for it if only I find a WURLITZER ORGAN at the Boot Fair. Must... go... to... boot... fair. There is a DANGER with liner notes as all the contributxx0rs will be INTERWEB MENTALISTS. However a good idea would be to call it 'THE WURLD IS FULL OF BABIES' or 'STONE AGE, BONE AGE'! Hem hem I am looking through a cheap book catalogue and these are kids bookZoR titles. Wash, scrub, brush!

Sarah, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sarah, maybe they could download the GREAT version we did at karaoke of DO YOU REALLY LIKE IT which is no doubt somewhere on the interweb.

Emma, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I would like to contribute as well.

Honda, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Here Emsipies.

Graham, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oooh can i contribute a musical collaboration with AUbrey?

katie, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

At this rate we should do a double CD. Which is fine by me.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Incentive to finish the Rebirth jams I've been working on! Count me IN!

Dan Perry, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I want to collaborate with Hanle y on a cover of "Heart and Soul" by Hey Lewis.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, please. I'm into doing something for it...

Douglas, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

NEAT how Nick said "this is going to be the worst album ever" right after I said can I be on it.

i mean i'd expect that from someone who knew me, or lived here , or whatever...i guess ...you knwo

, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah but that second one I did has a Moomin and a reform school girl on it! Who wouldn't buy that?

Kim, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I want to contribute the ambient interlude.Make it a two-CD set,and the second CD could be all cover versions. If it's going to be bad anyway...

Damian, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I might have something for you too.

dan, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Duane, you know that wasn't it.

N., Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm hoping to include buglebear senior's "I want to be an elf". 'Tis a Christmas song.

jel --, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The track I want to contribute is a Christmas song, too!

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it would be neat if everyone represented a different genre instead of just all lofi acoustic-y stuff and laptop glitch.

ethan, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What made you think that was going to be the case?

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The track I want to submit is SO not laptop glitch.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

perhaps Hank could be persuaded to provide a dirty garagey track or a loud, punishing bluesy track. he definitely doesn't do anything that could be described as "lo" or "acoustic". Just ask my cat cowering under the bed.

Samantha, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I vote for Ethan to do the art. I swear I'm not biased.

Does the deadline have to be as soon as May? I'd like to contribute, but it would be a bit of an effort. I think that might be too soon, anyhow, especially if this is going to be as involved a process as it seems to be leaning towards.

matthew m., Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't even know what 'laptop glitch' is.

, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

which i guess makes it a good genre for me to essay. can someone lend me a laptop?

, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I would love to contribute.

dleone, Saturday, 16 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm in, if there's room. My jazz quartet just recorded an album, I would love to use one of the alternate takes.

Jordan, Saturday, 16 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it would be cool if we could get a dope artist to do the artwork

chippy, Sunday, 17 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

YES IT WOULD BE

ethan, Sunday, 17 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

maybe you'll hit me and tell me to shut the fuck up.. but a better idea surely would be if you did like an 'eclectic' dj mix album with each ilx member/regular submitting one of their favourite songs.

might be better than a load of amateur glitch twee bollocks and momus.

Wyndham Earl, Sunday, 17 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Uh, no. For one thing, you don't know what's actually going to be presented (hell, nobody does); for another, the whole point is to show yer creativity. :-)

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 17 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I would literally much, much rather hear someone else's music rather than someone else's musical taste.

electric sound of jim, Sunday, 17 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay, I'm starting to get PISSED OFF that people are assuming that I would write twee glitch. There isn't a twee bone in my entire fucking body. I eat babies for breakfast, I'm so fucking hardcore. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go frolic with the unicorns. Tra-lala-lalalala, Tra-lala-laLAAAAAAAAA... SATAN!

Dan Perry, Sunday, 17 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's "Dan P*rry", Googling future prospective employers. That name again: "Dan P*rry".(* Sorry, I'm a wuss)

Graham, Sunday, 17 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(because Dan is so fucking hardcore)

Graham, Sunday, 17 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

electric sound of jim, Sunday, 17 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(more info on this in the next week or so, promise!)

jel --, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

wyndham e. - no that's a dumm idea.

duane, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

there's already suppose to be that ILX mixtape, right? you can just have that if you dont want to hear our wonderful works of creative genius.

duane, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oh ok.

what, i mean, you think i want to hear your scabby 'tastes' in music too?

meh.

Wyndham Earl, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So you didn't like the CD i sent you then Mr Earl?

electric sound of jim, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

if ppl have already decided this is going to suck, OK! i'm thinkin' a @20-minute drum solo.

duane, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

no i just thought of something better - a TOPLOADER COVER with a 20 min drum solo. SEe me go!

duane, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I might to a Jandek medley using only the spoons

electric sound of jim, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

can i "remix" it? this will involve editing in a 20 min drum solo somewhere.

, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

absolutely! it will be an hour long, and will take up one of the CDs on its own.

electric sound of jim, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hey duane stop stealing my jokes.
oh btw, to duane and duckling, i suggest we get set on our respective collaborations over easter?

di, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i didnt "steal" yr joke, i re-mixed it.

duane, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

From all I've read, this sounds like it may be three CDs....going on four;>

I can't play a damn thing, but I wouldn't mind writing some of the liner notes, as well....if we amateurs can contribute.

Nichole Graham, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My new band "Band for a day" are going to contribute some extreme noise, radiators, indeed.

jel --, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I work for a record label. They probably wouldn't release it but would be willing and able to give lots of help and advice on releasing it ourselves and be able to get a much better deal at a pressing plant than one availible to the general public

Ed, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Also, I now have music making facilities, (REAKTOR, BATTERY, DP3) on my computer, so I might have something for you.

Ed, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dammit, why'd all y'all post this on ILE instead of ILM? Doh! (I guess I should start reading ILE except, like, there's only so many hours in the day). I'd like to be in, but virtually everything I have recorded is pushing 10-15 years old now. I really should get my hard disk recording software operational and get some stuff together. Definitely not glitch from this end, but hard to tell which direction it'll go, cause I do anything from jangle pop to harsh electric noise, depending on my mood. (nothing like lack of focus)

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 21 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So have we decided on a final closing date? and where do we send our finished tracks (not that I have any yet, just wondering...)

electric sound of jim, Thursday, 21 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I just sent Jel a question regarding this. No doubt something will be figured out shortly. :-)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 21 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Still having fun trying out some other ideas - a Nagel-ish 3rd mock up can be viewed here if you wanna looksee.

Kim, Thursday, 21 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

get in ! - i will write summat today

a-33, Friday, 22 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

me too !!

, Friday, 22 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

three months pass...
Count me in!
I'm thinking of contributing my 2step remix of the Family Ties theme!!
