fingerprints in the pre-computer age

how did they check them? just watched http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0040843/ and they mention in it about checking over a million fingerprints before coming up with a match - surely it wasn't done by checking each one individually?

I'd think they would have had an indexing system to categorise fingerprints based on patterns.
