Picnic Aftermath

Blimey, I'm first to a PC (In I Love EasyEverything albeit)

OK, well first of all a massive massive thankyou to Suzy for putting up with all of us and letting us into her flat and onto her roof. It was a giddy 12-hour blast and please people who didn't come, come along to whatever we do next (Triggerfest 3-5 August I believe). Sorry I didnt get to say goodbye to some of the people we lost between party and pub - it was really great meeting all you new people, and extra thanks to Ed for smuggling beer across several borders to quench our thirst.

Assorted highlights:

- Hijacking the stereo for "One More Time"! (twice!) (This maybe not a highlight for anyone who had to listen to my soulful renditions)

- Nick D's ninja kick.

- Getting Mark S to go to a PUB.

- Sarah vs Alix GIRLFIGHT

- Drink Jenga

- Having my shirt torn at my adoring young ladies (OK lady. OK not adoring.)

But mostly just hours of sunshine and conversation - I was weak with larffter on many occasions. Thanks everybody for coming for making it a great afternoon, and thanks again to Suzy for organising it all.

Tom, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm never smoking any weed again, it made me paranoid and miserable, thus I hate myself for smoking it and God for inventing it in the first place. Grr!

DG, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Just out of interest, what has Mark S got against pubs? I'm not too keen on crowded city centre ones on a Saturday night, but I take it he dislikes all pubs?

Johnathan, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thought it was grate. I really enjoyed it.

the pinefox, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Johnathan: will take too long to explain here and now. Bear in mind I drank no alcohol between ages 16-36, and was once thrown OUT of a pub for asking for a glass of water. I will enterv them if there are nice people in them or on their way in (ie with me).

I dreamed I dreamed: that after the pub, we hit the streets, torched a car and liberated a private city zoo (ie let all the animals out); the police were called but we charmed them with our grate middle-classness. As we left I realised I had left my muji bacpack and glasses in one of the cages, and Tarden and I had to sneak back in and find them. He went his way, and I, hurrying to catch up with you others, was waylaid by a feral pack of youthful muggers who wanted whatever was in my backpack. I lunged for the ringleader, seized his nose in my teeth and bit hard enough that he ordered the others to back off. [interesting technical dream-work note here: I bodged this lunge first time round, but in an unusual Casteneda lucid-dream/ Godard show-the-mechanism type move, I was allowed to wipe and rewind the film for a second take]. I then ordered him to order his followers to START HAVING SEX WITH ONE ANOTHER in order that I could make good my escape. Luckily (?for who?) at this point I woke up.

I enjoyed everything immensely, even the pub bit (what an odd pub tho) and am only sorry I didn't get to speak to everyone. DG and my battle to the death has been postponed: we decided mututally that for now, the state of the world is such that Ultimate Good is better served by our uniting, as Team Rocket do with Ash, Misty and Brock in Pokémon 3: the Legend of the Unown. If we are all merely figments of le Petit Objet DP's imagination, then I have to say he did a very nice job. Also on the Grays Inn Fields virtual environment generally.

mark s, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i read mark s got into pubes...oh well, what's the gos re the girl fight? any nails?

Geoff, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry I couldn't make it - I had to work at The Spitz, to get everything ready for Spearmint. But a massive thank-you to everyone who came along. I still can't believe we lost money on a packed venue, but there you go...

Paul Strange, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Argh. I so wish I could go to those things.

Patrick, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I still don't know who everyone is, but it was great to meet everyone . Really amazing food. Especially Mark's mango salsa, lamb felafels and tabouleh. Also big shout for suzy's blender drinks of doom and also for providing the flat and everything. Hopefully I should have some photos sometime soon.

Ed, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

lamb felaffels = kibbeh, technically, tho yes I deep-fried instead of pan-fried 'em since onions were very extremely unusually liquid once blendered and caused mixture to not be firm enough to easily spatula. First time I ever tried it that way = Ok, no?

Anyway, thanx for enjoying! Empty tupperware on way home = glow in free-jazz picnic cook's heart...

mark s, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Let the record show that while I won't demand a repeat of this kind of event for Triggerfest, I certainly wouldn't mind an equivalent. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I just wish I could remember more of the party. Actually, then again, knowing my life, I probably shouldn't. From the point of getting onto the roof and starting the second bottle of vodka, it's all just a bit of a blur. I am assuming that I had fun. I really enjoyed the people that I remember meeting. Yes, bit cheer for Suzy.

Me, however, I've come to the conclusion that I really should try a bit harder to give up alcohol. For good.

Kate the Saint, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hi, I've finally surfaced and while I maintain a photographic memory for the picnic, I did spend most of yesterday in a haze. Thanks to everyone for coming (roof gets less use than I'd like) and I'm sure there must still be someone up there in the Wizard Of Oz/Twisted Hippie/C4 Kids' TV set roof garden that hasn't yet checked in. Big thanks to Ed for blender, bonhomie and carful of Euro-contraband. Ed is still trying to retrieve said vehicle, it's boxed in by sad old Citroens just now.

Kate, you didn't embarrass yourself; in fact, the contrary. You did stick to the water regimen until we got to SF and I started hurling Chili Ribs just outside the supervisory area. You must've lost compos mentis somewhere in between the first White Russian Milkshake and declaring Mark S Smartest Man On Earth. Anyway, I STILL HAVE VODKA so you can't have gotten too crazy. Mark distinguished himself with all manner of contents of Tupperware.

Thanks to everyone for coming over. Glad the weather held out; for the next two weeks I will mostly be eating hoummous, salsa and comedy crisps. When this next run of work is finished I HAVE to buy a blender!

suzy, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It was grate. Thanks to everyone for a fabulous afternoon, particularly Suzy for providing the roof and DG for creating ILE in the first place. I felt very rough indeed yesterday but it was certainly worth it.

Kate, you didn't make a fool out of yourself at all, unless I was so drunk I've forgotten all about it.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hello everyone, I was the one in the pink and white stripey top drinking pints of Bloody Mary. Sorry I didn't mingle more. Mad props etc. to Suzy for being the Hostess with the Mostest.

Madchen, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry, typos strike again. BIG cheer for Suzy, not bit cheer.

Kate the Saint, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I had to miss it as my Evil Twin gagged and bound me and locked me in a cupboard and went in my place. She then proceeded to get cataclysmically drunk and shout at people and steal all their fags. She always does this. Luckily yesterday she had the worst hangover she has had in ages and could not get out of bed until 5:30 when she managed to force a pizza down herself to absorb the alcohol (she had untied me by this point).

But my Evil Twin says thanks to everyone there for being marvellous.

Emma, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, I colluded with your evil twin Emma because she is always much more fun. And plenty fun was had by all, though i too feel my mingling was not up to par. My high-point of the day was convinving Tom and Starry Sarah to take Carsmilesteve to a small claims court for their unpaid sussed earnings. And the cheese.

Remember kids - a flyer is tantamount to a contract.

Pete, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Earnings?!?!? You people really start clubs and DJ because you think you'll make EARNINGS?!?!? Fools! Fools!!! Hah hah hah hah hah!

Kate the Saint, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Also, the skip diving gods smiled upon me and I found a strange Op Art cube out by the sheds when I was taking rubbish down. How fab is that?

suzy, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

In Sarah's case I think she was merely after expenses (that big Red bus isn't free you know). I've never run a club that hasn't made money, tell me - what am I doing wrong?

Pete, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't think Kate did anything embarrassing until later... and it really wasn't very much. Anyway... Strange Fruit Oxford used to make loads of money. SF London: loses money hand over fist! Doh!

Paul Strange, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

thank you suzy for a lovely time and letting us use your roof. It was lovely to see you all but frankly baran and hopkins can go to hell in a handcart for all i care ;P

carsmilesteve, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

baran and hopkins can go to hell in a handcart for all i care

too late steve, i believe that hell in a handcart is already one of hopkins' favoured drinking establishments.

kevan, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Another voice to the chorus; THANK-YOU Suzy, the whole experience was awesome and easily the best Saturday afternoon rooftop picnic I've ever had. It was great to meet everyone.

alex thomson, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes, thanx b 2 Suzy. Sorry for the swiftness (as opposed to the Swiftness, whatever it is that I'm imagining that might mean) of my exit around 9pm. I can't believe I missed a GIRLFIGHT.

Interesting to note (re: Mark S) just how many of one's brain-cells can be *preserved* by abstaining from alcohol for 20 years. A lesson to us all, perhaps.

You were all splendid. DG & I will be playing mixed doubles every Sunday afternoon in Southwark Park for the rest of the summer. Um... Mixed Doubles. 'Scuse me...

Michael Jones, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I won the girlfight. I think I got the last scrap. Alix thinks she's harder than me, just because she wrestled chickens as a yoof. GET OUT.

The picnic was wonderful. When is the next one? Suzy = classic.

And it wasn't a NINJA KICK.

It was a

LEG IN THE AIR!!!

I wonder how big the H3 tag makes things...

I do believe there was BOOTY DANCE on the 2nd Daft Punk rendition. Or was that DJ Pied Piper? It was really really wicked. Shout out to EC1 representz... uh... etc...

sarah, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Where are the photos? Me want photos.

DG, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

DG: I'll get them developed today or tomorrow. Perhaps someone would like to offer me a cyber-home for the scanned versions thereof?

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I would like to help but I don't have a proper site, so I suppose you could ask Tom or Ned very nicely...

DG, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'll take em on as longas they're not to big. Contact me off the list and I'll give you somewhere to upload them.

Ed, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, thanx Suzy. I'm just happy no one kicked me off the stereo.

Graham, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Graham played loads of sugary girlpop so I wouldn't let anyone kick him off the stereo. Then berrated him for not playing any Lollies. ;-)

Speaking of stereos, did anyone after the party happen to find the case for Nuggets Volume 3? It's the blue one, I believe.

Kate the Saint, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Probably blew off the roof, Kate. There was at least one big gust of wind which lifted all the free-lying CDs up in the air and smashed them against the wall. If any of them had flipped six inches higher, they'd have sailed out into the trees.

mark s, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Kate: I've got your Nuggets RIGHT HERE. And will be going out on a Day Of Errands from about noonish, so give me a ring and we'll sort out its return.

suzy, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Damn! Suzy, I sent mail to your hotmail account!

Kate the Saint, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey Kate, I ordered the Lollies CD today. It's got to be more fun than sitting in the dark watching the new Super Furries DVD in surround sound, being scared shitless by bizarre video collages, Catchphrasesque animations and scary noises coming from random corners of the room. Must. Switch. Off. Can't. Aaaargh.

Graham, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Um, photos are, rather inevitably, ten shades duller than the event itself. Somehow Kate and Tim avoided my probing lens all afternoon, and I failed to capture the magnificent spread (mango salsa, mmmm...) on film either. Just whole sequences of Nick D looking like a film star and Stevie T disavowing the artificiality of the non-pose.

Still, I've scanned a dozen (either the colour-matching on my scanner is dreadful or my monitor's on its way out - the indoor shots couldn't be more low-fi if they were signed to [*]).

(* - complete this great cultural reference gag by inserting appropriate indie label name).

I'll be in touch, Mr Ed/Dali.

Michael Jones, Thursday, 26 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh yeah - btw... if anyone really *doesn't* want images of themselves (and I haven't got anything remotely incriminating/embarrassing scanned) splashed all over the WibblyWobblyWeb, let me know and I'll pixelate/crop/smudge.

Michael Jones, Thursday, 26 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Will you email me any ones with me in 'em first?

Had traumatic work photos taken today. Badness. Theres my wurk addy so could you send them there? Please Mike? Please?

sarah, Thursday, 26 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I would like to point out that I am very unphotogenic and I don't look like the photos in the flesh.

Emma, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yep, in reality Emma is only one dimensional...

Pete, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sure I'm in some of the photos. If you see any large HANDS covering a person's face who is cowering from the camera, that would be me. Heh.

Yay for ordering Lollies CDs, Graham. You'll make our bassist very happy and give her something to do, processing the order. :-)
