Dr Morbius, Friday, 21 December 2007 18:39 (eighteen years ago)

They Shoot Horses is my favorite, but I haven't seen Klute.

Eric H., Friday, 21 December 2007 18:42 (eighteen years ago)

Or as its known in Liverpool,

They Shoot Horses Though Don't They Though.

Jarlrmai, Friday, 21 December 2007 19:30 (eighteen years ago)

Barbarella is my favourite, and I have seen Klute.

The blue-green world is drenched with horse gore, Friday, 21 December 2007 19:32 (eighteen years ago)

Klute or They Shoot Horses, but I think I'll go for the latter.

Alex in SF, Friday, 21 December 2007 19:33 (eighteen years ago)

i rly wanna see They Shoot Horses, Don't They

Agnes of God is a TRIIIIIP

Surmounter, Friday, 21 December 2007 19:37 (eighteen years ago)

Klute, but the movie's a drag.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 21 December 2007 19:57 (eighteen years ago)

She's as tense and intelligent in Julia and The Morning After. The only one of her Oscar-nominated performances that's a wheeze is her whiney daughter in Oh! Look at the Loons!

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 21 December 2007 19:58 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, playing yourself can be a bad move.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 21 December 2007 20:00 (eighteen years ago)

why do I think that Hepburn made the same mistake in that movie?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 21 December 2007 20:03 (eighteen years ago)

let's not kid ourselves, barbarella is a shoe in here.

darraghmac, Friday, 21 December 2007 21:34 (eighteen years ago)

No workout video, no credibility

JTS, Sunday, 23 December 2007 01:05 (eighteen years ago)

xp: due to the Apat*w core audience, probably

Dr Morbius, Sunday, 23 December 2007 18:45 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, Morbiuspaws.

The blue-green world is drenched with horse gore, Sunday, 23 December 2007 18:49 (eighteen years ago)

her Nora in that little-seen Doll's House is a warmup for Coming Home.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 24 December 2007 20:25 (eighteen years ago)

Coming Home was made to be a Carol Burnett skit.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 24 December 2007 20:35 (eighteen years ago)

BARBARELLA

"I'm Pygar, last of the Ornithanthropes."

Mr. Lions for Lambs fan doesn't like Coming Home?

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 26 December 2007 01:19 (eighteen years ago)

period of adjustment was on TCM earlier. i drifted in and out of it

Mr. Lions for Lambs fan doesn't like Coming Home?

Who does a better job of getting his girlfriend wet while in a wheelchair: Jon Voight or Tom Cruise?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 26 December 2007 03:43 (eighteen years ago)

Klute, if just for the scene where she gets high in the tub.

nicky lo-fi, Wednesday, 26 December 2007 07:44 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Saturday, 29 December 2007 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

Unsurprising but wrong.

Alex in SF, Saturday, 29 December 2007 00:36 (eighteen years ago)

I'm surprised the ILX fag vote didn't elevate 9 to 5. Too much polyester, not enough Dolly?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Saturday, 29 December 2007 00:45 (eighteen years ago)

I've never seen 9 to 5.

The secret Neil Simon cabal who went for Barefoot in the Parkworries me.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 3 January 2008 14:36 (eighteen years ago)

Fun with Dick and Jane?!

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 3 January 2008 14:45 (eighteen years ago)

That's really not worse than choosing Pond -- JF's best performance in that is her dive into the lake.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 3 January 2008 14:46 (eighteen years ago)

aw, i loved her in cat ballou.

Go Jane!

Also bummed Cat Ballou got ignored in this poll. :(

Johnny Fever, Friday, 15 February 2008 09:54 (eighteen years ago)

Oh shit I solved a crossword last night where the clue was "___ Ballou." I had no idea what it was. It got filled in by the other clues. "Cat Ballou, maybe that's some jazz standard," I thought.

seeing her appearance tonight at this -- FTA gets a DVD release in 3 weeks.

“FTA” (1972), the Vietnam War-era documentary, will have a rare screening with cast member Jane Fonda in person. Following the film, she will talk about her work in the controversial antiwar touring show “FTA” documents “the show the Pentagon couldn’t stop.” The revue, whose letters were said to stand both for Free Theater Associates and also Free (or, at times, another f-word) The Army, brought antiwar entertainment to military personnel at the height of Vietnam. Performers like Fonda, Donald Sutherland and Holly Near toured towns near military bases around the US and overseas, lending their support to troops who opposed the war. Mon., Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. $15. IFC Center. 323 Avenue of the Americas (at W. 3rd St.) 212 924-7771, ifccenter.com.

that movie sounds deeply horrible

i have a hard time believing shes 'burning a hole in the screen' or w/e but i guess it's ok 2 praise her for past works & just be kind 2 an old lady

johnny crunch, Thursday, 7 June 2012 17:17 (fourteen years ago)

Surely ppl here will be excited about the Sorkin thing

World Congress of Itch (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 7 June 2012 17:40 (fourteen years ago)

never liked her in anything and Sorkin is horrible

retro-shittified (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 7 June 2012 17:41 (fourteen years ago)

well Barbarella is fun but her "acting" is totally inconsequential to its greatness

retro-shittified (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 7 June 2012 17:41 (fourteen years ago)

She's funny in it!

I also believe actors can be great in bad films.

It would be so much less awkward if old ppl just stopped being sexual, like, at all. Or thinking that they were. I mean c'mon.

You're trying too hard.

Watched Klute a week or so ago, what an excellent movie. And she's just so satisfyingly effervescent in Barefoot In The Park.

No general thread for Redford as an actor, just director--surprised. (And how did The China Syndrome not get a vote here?)

Watched The Electric Horseman for the first time since it came out--35 years, wow. (I saw Comes a Horseman then too, and they've been blurred together in my mind ever since.) Such an old-fashioned film--I think a couple of famous Hollywood liberals helped usher in the Reagan era in American movies. Lots of character actors: Valerie Perrine, Allan Arbus, John Saxon, Nicolas Coster (the lawyer who says "I'm not here" early in All the President's Men), Basil Hoffman (also in ATPM), others. Willie Nelson sings about everything spinning out of control, Fonda says "Are we lost?", Redford assures her that no, they're not lost.

Didn't find Walk on the Wild Side as horror-show campy as I expected. A little bit from Stanwyck and Baxter, but for the most part, I thought Capucine's "dilemma" was presented about as well as a studio release in 1962 allowed. Fonda's "I run the candy concession" was a great line.

the podcast you must remember this did an (uneven but deeply worthwhile) series on Jean Seberg and Jane Fonda. i listened to it before the Weinstein et al landslide began, but it’s partic instructive to learn about how abusive the conditions Seberg and Fonda worked in were. The Seberg part of the story is almost too painful to listen to tbh. I am grateful Fonda is still around.

horseshoe, Thursday, 21 December 2017 16:09 (eight years ago)

there’s some great background on how Fonda essentially directed-as-actor a sex scene in Coming Home to make it feminist, as she envisioned, against the resistance of her director.

horseshoe, Thursday, 21 December 2017 16:11 (eight years ago)

seconded, i just listened through that series a couple weeks ago. had absolutely no idea about some of that shit.

the pleather of pleather paul (Doctor Casino), Thursday, 21 December 2017 16:12 (eight years ago)

Karina Longworth v otm-ily identifies Fonda’s signature intensity, which I gather Fonda herself has mixed feelings about. it is v endearing imo. Also, she’s a boss.

horseshoe, Thursday, 21 December 2017 16:13 (eight years ago)

did Hal Ashby not want her CH character to have an orgasm? wouldn't surprise me.

yes, even in as flawed a film as Julia, you don't think she's at all undermatched vs Robards' Dashiell Hammett (which I guess might be the main thing they get right about Lillian Hellman).

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 21 December 2017 16:16 (eight years ago)

He wanted the focus to be on penetrative sex iirc, but for Fonda, part of the draw of the story was that Voight’s character, having undergone a traumatic injury, has to find a new form of masculinity, so he gets her off by going down on her, I think? I have not yet seen this movie, though I want to, so I may be misremembering.

horseshoe, Thursday, 21 December 2017 16:18 (eight years ago)

the idea that actors occasionally leave traces of their own ideas on films in which they may have been treated very badly comforts me. I like to think film history is littered with Fonda-like interventions.

horseshoe, Thursday, 21 December 2017 16:19 (eight years ago)

I just finished the Seberg/Fonda episodes this week.
