I assume you're being sarcastic, given the pictures below the title. Still, have any of you seen Close's brief role at the end of the movie Nine Lives. I won't give away what happens, but it's devestating. The gist of the film is that it is nine vignettes -- in real time using only a single, unbroken camera shot -- taken at a crucial moment in the lives of nine women.

And as I said, the closing episode, featuring Close, is heartbreaking.(n.1)

(n.1) As it happens, I've never been impressed with Close aside from this short role. But her turn in this movie makes up for a lot of sins.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 23 December 2007 05:11 (eighteen years ago)

no no no, i'm not being sarcastic at all.

her performances in all the movies referenced above are classic to the hilt. esp. fatal attraction.

Surmounter, Sunday, 23 December 2007 05:12 (eighteen years ago)

every time i see her onscreen, i'm impressed. her energy is relentless.

Surmounter, Sunday, 23 December 2007 05:13 (eighteen years ago)

i haven't seen Nine Lives! sounds RIGHt up my alley.

I always associate Close with 80s films: Large, blunt roles; outsized personality; always "emoting" instead of "talking."

But like I said, she blew me away in that one film, so maybe I misjudged her. It is really different from the other roles I've seen her in.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 23 December 2007 05:17 (eighteen years ago)

well she certainly had many opportunities in her roles to EMOTE tremendously, but i've definitely seen her in more subtle fashion. i mean Jagged Edge is an obvious example of a serious, nuanced performance, however 80s it may be.

Surmounter, Sunday, 23 December 2007 05:19 (eighteen years ago)

METACRITICS' Page for Nine Lives (80 METASCORE)

Yeah, Jagged Edge was pretty good.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 23 December 2007 05:20 (eighteen years ago)

totally have a craving for it now.

Surmounter, Sunday, 23 December 2007 05:20 (eighteen years ago)

Best other segments in the film (all are good to great) include the female prisoner's hard day and the brief chance encounter between a former boyfriend and girlfriend. All very sad and revealing.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 23 December 2007 05:23 (eighteen years ago)

wow that looks fucking great. holly and sissy no less. thx for tip

Surmounter, Sunday, 23 December 2007 05:25 (eighteen years ago)

Close's segment is the best, by far. It packs the emotional whollop that you get from the critical scene in Crash (I won't give it away, but it involves a little girl protecting her father), without the feeling that you're being intentionally manipulated by the filmmakers.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 23 December 2007 05:26 (eighteen years ago)

i'm telling u, u should take this as an opportunity to rent a few more Close movies. she packs a punch for sure.

Surmounter, Sunday, 23 December 2007 05:27 (eighteen years ago)

Be forewarned: Nine Lives is kind of a sobering movie. Not all sad, but no treacly happy endings.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 23 December 2007 05:28 (eighteen years ago)

Okay, I've got the (now 40% more expensive) Blockbuster online plan! What's the best Close film to rent?

No 101 Dalmations, plz.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 23 December 2007 05:29 (eighteen years ago)

well i'm a sucker for tearjerkers, unfortunately.

hahaha let's see... well i'm BIG on Fatal Attraction. and of course you have The Big Chill, which always warrants a viewing, IMO. and Dangerous Liaisons is a safe bet.

Surmounter, Sunday, 23 December 2007 05:33 (eighteen years ago)

I misread the title as "Chuck Close is so fucking talented it hurts" - looked at the first few replies & freaked out - PHOTOREALISM HAS GONE TOO FAR!!! etc.

Ol Bertie Dastard, Sunday, 23 December 2007 05:35 (eighteen years ago)

=P

also The House Of The Spirits is this wacked out movie with Close and Meryl Streep that is rather entertaining if misguided.

Surmounter, Sunday, 23 December 2007 05:37 (eighteen years ago)

Big Chill it is.

Oh, wait! Close was in Reversal of Fortune with Jeremy Irons. That may be the one to start with.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 23 December 2007 05:39 (eighteen years ago)

ooh i haven't seen that! NETFLIX...

Surmounter, Sunday, 23 December 2007 05:40 (eighteen years ago)

Many Oscars, that film.

(Or at least one for Irons, I remember that).

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 23 December 2007 05:42 (eighteen years ago)

METACRITICS off-the-charts 93 score for Reversal of Fortune.

Of course, I know this is a Glenn Close thread, but -- as I understand it -- Reversal of Fortune is totally Jeremy Irons' film.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 23 December 2007 05:45 (eighteen years ago)

he's soooo cute

Surmounter, Sunday, 23 December 2007 05:48 (eighteen years ago)

Good, brooding actor. Past his moment, tho. I can see him now in interesting character roles, a-la William Hurt's short turn in A History of Violence (tho Irons could never be that funny or campy).

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 23 December 2007 05:52 (eighteen years ago)

what other big things did he do? i can see his face in something i know and love now but i don't know what

Surmounter, Sunday, 23 December 2007 05:53 (eighteen years ago)

^^^ There are others, sure, but the correct answer is Dead Ringers

Pillbox, Sunday, 23 December 2007 05:56 (eighteen years ago)

Irons? Damage, Dead Ringers, The French Lt.'s Woman, among others.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 23 December 2007 05:57 (eighteen years ago)

ooh i've been told i rly need to see The French Lt. 's Woman

Surmounter, Sunday, 23 December 2007 05:57 (eighteen years ago)

This is fast turning into a "Jeremy Irons is so f----g talented it hurts, let's celebrate" thread.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 23 December 2007 06:01 (eighteen years ago)

lol i kno

french lt. was with meryl?

Surmounter, Sunday, 23 December 2007 06:02 (eighteen years ago)

Not sure; I'll check. I want to see Glenn Close in the role of a minor villian in a future Batman movie! Well, maybe one in the first incarnation of Batman movies. As a villian opposite Christian Bale, not so much.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 23 December 2007 06:02 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, Meryl Streep in French Lt..

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 23 December 2007 06:05 (eighteen years ago)

close is such a villain

Surmounter, Sunday, 23 December 2007 06:06 (eighteen years ago)

rent yourself season 4 of 'the shield' to see glenn close at her absolute best. you should probably rent the first three seasons first, though...

omar little, Sunday, 23 December 2007 07:45 (eighteen years ago)

Irons has been giving terrific small performances for a few years. Check out Being Julia, The Merchant of Venice, and that cable production of Elizabeth starring Helen Mirren (superior to the Oscar bait movie released last year).

My favorite Close performance is still in Dangerous Liasions; otherwise she's too frosty.

Alfred, obv. I've said this upthread, but if your criticism is that Close is too frosty (and she often is), you should watch her short appearance in Nine Lives. Not frosty at all. Sad and shattering.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 23 December 2007 15:38 (eighteen years ago)

find her a bit annoying, tbh

pc user, Sunday, 23 December 2007 15:43 (eighteen years ago)

one of the few redeeming features of west wing s05.
