they are at least being honest about being conformists, right?

Some people hate everything.
― Kerm, Monday, 24 December 2007 13:49 (eighteen years ago)
just watch a john hughs movie. they're always stealing th e hotgirl from the loveable loser, but they make the lovable loser realize they really should have been in love with the plain girl who always had a cursh on him so I guess it all works out in the end
― burt_stanton, Monday, 24 December 2007 14:43 (eighteen years ago)
also john cuesack movies
― burt_stanton, Monday, 24 December 2007 14:44 (eighteen years ago)
i really like preppy, unless it's like an evil lifestyle as stated above. but i'm totally into the look and i think people who aren't stuck in a time warp accept it as an optional accessory these days. i mean, a little prep mixed in is always pretty fun
― Surmounter, Monday, 24 December 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)
yah well the type of people who dressed preppy in the 80s dont dress at all like that anymore - so the aesthetic has been robbed of the meaning what drove the hatred
― jhøshea, Monday, 24 December 2007 16:24 (eighteen years ago)
prepster

i don't think this is true in the uk - there are vast swaths of men whi reach the age of 24, start dressing like their equally preppy dads and that's them done till they're 85.
xpost see, that's not preppy to me at all!
― CharlieNo4, Monday, 24 December 2007 16:51 (eighteen years ago)
the patron saint of foxy xp

Zack Morris was never preppy. AC Slhater just jealous.

yeah in the u.s. too. see backyard suburban barbecues where the men all have polo shirts, cargo shorts and loafers. (or polo shirts, khakis and loafers.)
― tipsy mothra, Monday, 24 December 2007 17:06 (eighteen years ago)
That's suburban douchewad more than preppy. Preppy now is like this weird mix of indie and hipstery kinda styles since all the $$$ have moved back into the cities... slim cuts, sweaters, longish bangs, plaid shirts, bright colors, etc.
― burt_stanton, Monday, 24 December 2007 17:11 (eighteen years ago)
Who but a douchewad wears a sweater to a backyard barbecue?
― Kerm, Monday, 24 December 2007 17:14 (eighteen years ago)
polo shirts aren't preppy anymore? but they're called POLO shirts.
actual preppies i've seen over the last few years (i.e. upper east side prep-school kids) have definitely had the long bangs, untucked bright-color shirts...there was a spate of upturned collars a year or two ago but i haven't seen that lately.
― tipsy mothra, Monday, 24 December 2007 17:17 (eighteen years ago)
i see that still. i LOVE bright preppy shirts. so hot. i wish i could afford more of them. if i could, i'd be pretty 2 days out of the week!
― Surmounter, Monday, 24 December 2007 17:23 (eighteen years ago)
i had a lot of preppy stuff in my wardrobe the first couple years of college but it was the 80s at the height of the preppy style. i eventually chucked that look in favor of 60s vintage. my sense is that after the 80s it became strictly a frat guy look.
― gershy, Monday, 24 December 2007 17:25 (eighteen years ago)
i don't know it's also a very high-fashion/hipster look these days, IMHO.
― Surmounter, Monday, 24 December 2007 17:27 (eighteen years ago)
Polo shirts are just nicer t-shirts. Retail workers wear the polo/khaki outfit (badly). Lots of the construction laborers I used to work with wore polo shirts because they held up better than t-shirts.
― Kerm, Monday, 24 December 2007 17:28 (eighteen years ago)
see, i don't really keep up with fashion, i've already lived thru multiple recyclings of particular looks, it's hard to remember when something went out of fashion and then came back in.
― gershy, Monday, 24 December 2007 17:29 (eighteen years ago)
i know, i barely do either, but i watch enough tv to see the preppy thing still happening. i mean, now, men's fashion is speckled with s&m leather and steel, too, so what the hell do i know.
i really like polo shirts for that reason as well, xp - -they're just sturdier. more structure
― Surmounter, Monday, 24 December 2007 17:43 (eighteen years ago)
o geez remember Structure? that was a big then for guyz for a while. ugh men's fashion is so sad.
― Surmounter, Monday, 24 December 2007 18:06 (eighteen years ago)
Ugh. I was a non-rich kid who went to school with a bunch of rich kids. I still have issues here.

my best friend made the Men's Vogue fashion blog:
This guy is kind of half preppy (plaid shirt, boat shoes), half street (messenger bag, rolled jeans, graffiti). I like his undefinability. Brooklyn, NY, August 2007.

yes! i love the way the graffiti you are standing near contributes to your look's undefinability!

― chaki, Monday, 24 December 2007 23:35 (eighteen years ago)
I don't know I associate "preppy" with frat boy by default, so I think preppy I and I think A&F/American Eagle fake vintage shit.
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 24 December 2007 23:39 (eighteen years ago)
"Preppy" was such a huge thing when I was like 9 or 10 years old. So we're talking about '80-'81. Everyone had to dress that way. That's how you impressed people at school. There was a book about what it meant to be "preppy", too. Izod shirts...matching the colors pink and green. It's kindof hard to remember now. God forbid you were one of the poor kids cause that shit was EXPENSIVE. I think I just had one white Izod shirt and that was it.
I'm sorry I haven't taken the time to read this whole thread before posting.
― Bimble, Monday, 24 December 2007 23:45 (eighteen years ago)
Oh also you had to have button down collars on Oxford shirts. That was mega important.
― Bimble, Monday, 24 December 2007 23:46 (eighteen years ago)
sweet brah. preppy 2007 is ... skinny guy with stubble wearing boat shoes, plaid shirt and too-small brown tweed jacket on the L train. it's effete old new england crap.
― burt_stanton, Monday, 24 December 2007 23:48 (eighteen years ago)
haha you just described me last week
― gr8080, Monday, 24 December 2007 23:52 (eighteen years ago)
I think this thread will be ILX's painful realization that we all hate 80s/90s preppy, but that we are all aughties preppy.
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 24 December 2007 23:55 (eighteen years ago)
^^^^ when i met this dude i loved his undefineability

― gr8080, Monday, 24 December 2007 23:57 (eighteen years ago)
i think it would help if we understood that there is not a monolithic "preppy" look but rather a variety of preppy styles
― max, Monday, 24 December 2007 23:58 (eighteen years ago)
also that maybe the OP was trying to troll

I am sort of into the clean clean early tennis club-y preppie style, at least for grils on the east coast in the summer. Pleated cotton skirts, Lily Pulitzer prints, headbands, Peter Pan collars, those reversible purses with wooden handles that had a revival about three years ago, etc. It's nauseating if taken to everyday-wear, but done crisp crisp crisp in the heat it's pretty classic.
― Laurel, Thursday, 3 January 2008 20:42 (seventeen years ago)
I had to come a long way back around to appreciating prep, having grown up as a townie in a resort area.
I still really cannot tolerate those Sperry Topsiders with the white soles, for instance. I don't care HOW they're worn.
― Laurel, Thursday, 3 January 2008 20:43 (seventeen years ago)
Preppy things I still own/wear: Fair Isle sweaters, grey wool blazer, oldskool Burberry trench, Lacoste shirts...and I occasionally carry the Bermuda bag I was given at the age of 12 (five covers: white dotted Swiss, beige cord with grosgrain accent, family tartan, navy wool and green wool). I still never, ever wear purple.
My grandmother was a fashion buyer for a very preppy retailer, Peck and Peck, back when it was the go-to store for debutantes etc. I inherited a ton of 3/4 sleeve cableknit grosgrain-trim cardigans and a ton of bulletproof tweed items. Back in the day I felt the only acceptable sports footwear were Keds, Tretorns or Fred Perry.
― suzy, Thursday, 3 January 2008 20:59 (seventeen years ago)
tennis prep is just hot
wow you're so lucky suzy

I got so mad at the village preppy in my freshman dorm once (for nonstop reactionary "the poor deserve their poverty" blather) that I hit him where it hurt most -- I flicked a spoonful of Spaghettios onto his immaculate cream-colored sweater.
― Rock Hardy, Thursday, 3 January 2008 21:55 (seventeen years ago)
Real preppies = sprinkling manifest destiny onto their cornflakes since 1620.
