Are there people on ilx who are young enough to have seen star wars: the phantom menace when they were kids (say 11 or under)? If so, did you like Jar Jar as a child?

I remember when the film came out Lucas's response to anti-Jar Jar sentiment was to argue that he would be popular with kids, just like C3P0 and R2D2 were in the 70s, and that adult critics were missing the point. Is there anything in this?

I've never seen the phantom menace so don't really have any strong feelings about Jar Jar either way.

I'm pretty sure that when I was a kid that Scrappy-Doo was my favourite character from Scooby-Doo and it was only later I learned that everyone was supposed to hate him. Maybe 'kid' is not specific enough here, though? I think when I liked Scrappy-Doo I was about 5 or 6, maybe if I was 9 or 10 I would have found him unbearable?
I'm trying to think of other hate-figure 'kid-friendly' characters from children's franchises that are also followed by adult nerds, and whether kids actually liked them?

I was 8 when it came out. Jar jar was hatefully bad even at that age, likewise the young anakin. Don't think anyone amongst my friends ever expressed any sentiment other than loathing for jar jar. Darth maul had a dual-bladed lightsaber though so all was forgiven

Just searched 'jar jar binks costume' on amazon and the only ones that have any reviews are the 2 adult sized ones, the 4 children's size results are all on zero.

My five year nephew has seen this. He's a massive fan of Darth Maul but I've never heard him mention the Jar Jar

i was 8 as well when i saw this, and while i didn't hate him jar jar wasn't one of my favorite characters. the dumb enemy droids were cute though

I hated Star Wars as a kid, my mother dragged me into a cinema when I was 4 made me watch it under duress. Then years later when she got divorced and started hitting the town, my sister was left in charge of me and took me on a date with this violent freak she ended up marrying to a showing of Star Wars, Empire fucking Strikes Back and Return Of the fucking Jedi in one marathon viewing. I fucking hate George Lucas and every piece of shit he has made.
