I don't eat these days, just drink. I'm eating a pecan butter & jelly sandwich now though. I have to eat something.

Xmas eve -

We had Swiss cheese fondue with bread, apples, and pears and then for dessert we had dark chocolate fondue; along with the bread, apples, and pears, we put out marshmallows, blackberries, and bananas.

Xmas Day -

Mom is making prime rib; we're bringing a salad. I don't know what we're drinking, but my parents own liquor stores, so there should be a variety of good stuff.

Saturday at my sister's house, finger foods and "taco soup." I made deviled eggs with a little surprise, sauteed shrimp under the egg filling.

Tomorrow morning, the traditional heart-buster breakfast -- bacon, eggs, biscuits and gravy. Tomorrow night, we'll go to my parents' house for chicken and dressing and the usual go-withs.

PANETTONE

gabbneb, Tuesday, 25 December 2007 04:00 (eighteen years ago)

Tonight for dinner I made pot-au-feu - short ribs, a chuck roast, and a couple of beef shanks with potatoes, carrots, leeks, and green beans. We ate this with mustard, cornichons, horseradish, bread with goat cheese, and the head of garlic I cooked in the broth. It was a meat orgy.

Drank Old Fashioneds as my wife's grandfather would have made them had we been at home, local-ish red wine and some beers.

Tomorrow morning: bubble bread.

Just got back from the brother's house, where we celebrated Christmas Pt. 1. Our typical Christmas fare of tamales (home-made for the first time in years!) and pozole was greeeeeat. Topped off with a few Sam Adams and getting whooped at Loteria. Yum.

Parsnip orange & ginger soup. Turkey with stuffing and roast potatoes/parsnips/carrots, pigs in blankets, pickled red cabbage with apple and juniper berries, cranberry and orange and port sauce, bread sauce, and sprouts (veggies who necessitated the soup being veggie are bringing their own food, but I've not used the turkey fat for the veg so they can have all the trimmings). Raspberry pavlova. Irish coffees and chocolate mints. Traditions'r'us this year (except i don't like christmas pudding so we're not having any of that). Drinking: bucks fizz for breakfast this morning. Rioja, port then I don't know: Baileys, Glayva, whatever I feel like once I get dinner out of the way.

ailsa, Tuesday, 25 December 2007 15:22 (eighteen years ago)

Right now: Panettone I just toasted in front of the fire (which I successfully built when I got up this morning), and drinking a cup of 2nd flush Darjeeling. I think we are going to try to make some kind of eggnog french toast for breakfast, and then I think it will be hot buttered rum for present opening.

I told people last night about this on chat but here goes. Last night we were invited to a semi-private dinner at our favorite place in town -- my mother in law is big buddies with the chef and waitress, and there were only three parties seated. They did a four-course menu with a wine flight of five champagnes. Said menu:

1. Greek antipasto plate: spanakopita, olives, tomatoes
2. Tomato fig soup
3. Salad with strawberries and avocado
4. Four entree choices -- I had the eggplant moussaka, perfectly balanced and light but still substantial; others at my table had a seafood bouillabaisse that made them all go into paroxysms of praise.

Then we had cake and coffee.

Tonight, our traditional Christmas Day baked rigatoni meal, then we play Taboo.
