the white chocolate thread made me search for a maple sugar thread, and all i found was a thread about horrible butter syrup, which included this
Also, there has been not enough discussion on this thread of the glories of MAPLE SUGAR CANDY -- which, again, you have to get the REAL stuff and not the "maple-flavored" crap. That was always in our stockings on Christmas. I suddenly feel like my holiday experience is incomplete.

i've been to a sugar shack once, as a kid. i mostly remember the big metal boiling tub of syrup. smelled good.

(i don't know about farmers markets, i haven't any syrup/sugar stalls but never specifically looked either. you'd think there would be, at least seasonally.)

(haven't SEEN any)
I used to get maple candy shaped like santa claus at christmas time. And a few years ago my sister sent me a huge jar of maple cream - partially crystallized maple syrup - I ate it all with a spoon. Trader Joe's has wine bottle sized grade B syrup and that is where I get my current fix. So very delicious.

is maple syrup an uncommon experience for uk'ers? other non-americans? or is it common but primarily in artificial form?

I'm pretty sure I saw the real stuff (can't remember if it was vermont or canada) at waitrose.
