anyone notice De Niro was DOING RUPERT PUPKIN?! (albeit with worse material)

They destroyed Bill Irwin's pantomime with reaction shots of Steve Martin and the Bushes.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 27 December 2007 17:35 (eighteen years ago)

Who is Rupert Pupkin?

Eric H., Thursday, 27 December 2007 17:35 (eighteen years ago)

haha, what great Marty/Bobby film have you not yet seen?

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 27 December 2007 17:36 (eighteen years ago)

I dunno. I thought I got all the great ones.

Eric H., Thursday, 27 December 2007 17:38 (eighteen years ago)

Just kidding. I haven't seen Mean Streets yet.

Eric H., Thursday, 27 December 2007 17:39 (eighteen years ago)

Bill Irwin's pantomime

I knew I was missing something

gabbneb, Thursday, 27 December 2007 17:42 (eighteen years ago)

I tuned out before Brian Wilson. I feared what the production numbers would look like, and especially the reaction shots.

Miss Ross was predictably animatronic.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 27 December 2007 17:44 (eighteen years ago)

A King of Comedy with Ms. Ross instead of Sandra Bernhard might have been dy-no-mite.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 27 December 2007 18:01 (eighteen years ago)

Ms Bernhard was award-worthy.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 27 December 2007 18:11 (eighteen years ago)

That Bill Irwin thing went on forever.

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 27 December 2007 20:55 (eighteen years ago)

No, the only "forever" element was Martin Short.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 27 December 2007 21:02 (eighteen years ago)

that too.

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 27 December 2007 21:24 (eighteen years ago)

It's all been downhill since Clifford, eh?

nabisco, Thursday, 27 December 2007 21:31 (eighteen years ago)

since Ed Grimley's demise.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 27 December 2007 21:33 (eighteen years ago)

I went to elementary school with Jonathan Biss (the pianist who did the tribute to Leon Fischer). That kid got soooooooo much shit in school, glad to see he's doing ok now.

da croupier, Thursday, 27 December 2007 22:03 (eighteen years ago)

Leon Fleisher, sorry

da croupier, Thursday, 27 December 2007 22:03 (eighteen years ago)

and judging from his youtube interviews 5th graders would still want to kick his ass.

da croupier, Thursday, 27 December 2007 22:06 (eighteen years ago)

OTM

Although, he looks like he can play.

B.L.A.M., Thursday, 27 December 2007 22:54 (eighteen years ago)

Haha ... first Google result.

De Niro was reading "I woulda whacked Steve Martin if Marty was directing me tonight, BWAHA!" material. Better he had come out as Max Cady and just laughed.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 28 December 2007 15:07 (eighteen years ago)

two years pass...

on last night? anyone see?

Rage, Resentment, Spleen (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 30 December 2009 18:38 (sixteen years ago)

part of it

welcome to gudbergur (harbl), Wednesday, 30 December 2009 19:16 (sixteen years ago)

really shitty picks for the Bruce tribute.

The Brubeck tribute had me in tears though, when they introduced his kids...I thought he was going to die.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 30 December 2009 21:19 (sixteen years ago)

fifteen years pass...

Who’s going this year??????!!!!!!!

Crispy Ambulance Chaser (Boring, Maryland), Wednesday, 13 August 2025 18:31 (four months ago)

Kid Rock & Scott Baio, Sugar & Spice or whatever their name is

In case anyone was still wondering whether or not Trump's brain was permanently stuck in the late '70s to mid '80s, the next batch of Kennedy Center Honors will go to George Strait, Sylvester Stallone, Michael Crawford (the guy who played the Phantom of the Opera on Broadway, apparently), Gloria Gaynor, and KISS. Oh, and he'll be hosting the event himself, because this is the kind of thing he took the job for.

I'm actually kinda surprised by Strait; I can't imagine him ever having been written about in the NY Post or the Daily News during Trump's years of pop-cultural awareness.

xp Diamond & Silk? One of them died a few years ago, iirc.

better than ezra collective soul asylum (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 13 August 2025 20:14 (four months ago)

yeah, he seems mostly apolitical in my experience

Andy the Grasshopper, Wednesday, 13 August 2025 20:15 (four months ago)

yes heheh, 'Diamond & Silk' lol

Andy the Grasshopper, Wednesday, 13 August 2025 20:16 (four months ago)

Gene Simmons is not a Trump fan.

hungover beet poo (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 13 August 2025 20:27 (four months ago)

"I knew him before he entered politics. Look what that gentleman did to this country and the polarization — got all the cockroaches to rise to the top. Once upon a time, you were embarrassed to be publicly racist and out there with conspiracy theories. Now it’s all out in the open because he allowed it."

hungover beet poo (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 13 August 2025 20:29 (four months ago)

JFC does this POS need to stain every thread here?

(•̪●) (carne asada), Wednesday, 13 August 2025 20:30 (four months ago)

what did Gene Simmons do to you, carne?

hungover beet poo (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 13 August 2025 20:31 (four months ago)

he's also going to honor George White and George Male

rob, Wednesday, 13 August 2025 20:32 (four months ago)

Gene Simmons is not a Trump fan.

Gene Simmons is a fan of Gene Simmons being on TV, though.

Instead of create and send out, it pull back and consume (unperson), Wednesday, 13 August 2025 20:34 (four months ago)

what did Gene Simmons do to you, carne?

lol sorry for the outburst. I'm just tired of so many conversations revolving around Donald and his actions and not to say i'm not part of the problem either.

(•̪●) (carne asada), Wednesday, 13 August 2025 20:37 (four months ago)

I generally pay little or no attention to the Kennedy Honors but that's a huge thing the news is talking about today

Andy the Grasshopper, Wednesday, 13 August 2025 20:38 (four months ago)

is it really huge though?

(•̪●) (carne asada), Wednesday, 13 August 2025 20:39 (four months ago)

Sorry, carne I understand. but I have to live less than miles from DC I can’t escape unless I move or die

Crispy Ambulance Chaser (Boring, Maryland), Wednesday, 13 August 2025 20:40 (four months ago)

Less than five miles

Crispy Ambulance Chaser (Boring, Maryland), Wednesday, 13 August 2025 20:40 (four months ago)

Did 81-year old Gloria Gaynor feel obligated to accept, or is she a Trumpy?

The Kennedy Center Honors have always had other performers singing in honor of the honorees who are singers. None announced yet

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 13 August 2025 20:50 (four months ago)

Michael Crawford (the guy who played the Phantom of the Opera on Broadway, apparently)

I'm guessing Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em never made it to US cable TV then?

slip a gallon to me alan (Matt #2), Wednesday, 13 August 2025 20:53 (four months ago)

xp maybe he just used I Will Survive a bunch at rallies without permission or compensation, and now he owes her a solid

Andy the Grasshopper, Wednesday, 13 August 2025 20:53 (four months ago)

Crawford is interesting "that's the same guy?" material: that sitcom (which, yeah, I'm not super was widely distributed on PBS over here); starring in Phantom for the Broadway peeps; and-as I know him-the lead in non-Beatles Richard Lester joints.

Lithium Just Madison (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 13 August 2025 21:49 (four months ago)

Beatles plural, as John is in How I Won The War.

Lithium Just Madison (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 13 August 2025 21:52 (four months ago)

Despite being genuinely worthy of the honor, George Strait's selection is totally some quid pro quo shit with Abbott for the extra congressional seats.

Lithium Just Madison (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 13 August 2025 22:06 (four months ago)

xp maybe he just used _I Will Survive_ a bunch at rallies without permission or compensation, and now he owes her a solid

Doesn’t sound like our guy
