Grew up with this show. Given the family connections to Hawaii, it was always a favorite, and that's still the greatest opening credit sequence for TV ever, especially the rushed closeup to Jack Lord.

two years pass...

And now...the series reboot:

CBS has successfully persuaded Alex O’Loughlin to headline its in-the-works remake of Hawaii Five-0, sources confirm.

O’Loughlin will play Det. Steve McGarrett, the role originated by Jack Lord.

This marks CBS’ third partnership with the in-demand actor. Their previous efforts, Moonlight and Three Rivers, both ended after one season.

Earlier this week, Lost’s Daniel Dae Kim was tapped to join the Hawaii cast in the role of state police officer Chin Ho Kelly.

The update is being shepherded by Fringe writer-producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, as well as CSI: NY e.p. Peter Lenkov.

I see we have regional rivalry here. I MIGHT allow that they're equally great.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 11 February 2010 03:31 (fifteen years ago)

Oh jeez, that's the fugly irish dude from that hilariously bad vampire show on cbs.

He should be begging for potatoes out on the streets.

The original series had a legitimately local flavor and is still much loved here in Hawaii for that reason. This remake? Maybe not so much.

He's an aussie BTW.

Super Cub, Thursday, 11 February 2010 07:34 (fifteen years ago)

there was a big-studio 5-0 movie in the works a couple years ago, wonder if it morphed into this remake show? agreed the original had mad local flavor.

since starting this thread I've received seasons two, three and six as gifts. season six (73-74) may be the peak, really weird psycho-twisty plots and ACTION galore. no Kono, tho.

oh yeah. the brooding, haunted sonny crokett character set the blueprint for a lot of the lead characters in police-shows that followed, but few did it as well (there was a great scene where he and tubbs were moving into a dangerous undercover situation, so crockett pulls to the side of the road and calls his ex-wife on a payphone to maybe have a final call with her (and his daughter, i think)). the plots were far more straightforward and believable/less contrived than seasons two through the end (the show fell off the rails fast beginning in season two). of course, it also looked great, and that's an important point in assessing the show, too, as was its innovative use of music.

I apologize to the Irish for associating this scruffy loser with them. I just knew he wasn't American, because his attempt at an American accent was really painful.

seven months pass...

Premiere is Monday night.

Early inside scoop was that this was going to be awful, but everyone who's seen the pilot has said it's excellent. Apparently the spent $50mil on it!!?!??

Not lying: this is mostly exciting to me cause I no longer have LOST to say "hay I know where they shot that"

"ill samosa, hoos" "gibreel, big wrink" (gr8080), Monday, 20 September 2010 09:23 (fifteen years ago)

It was pretty good, actually.

No Good, Scrunty-Looking, Narf Herder (Gukbe), Thursday, 23 September 2010 02:55 (fifteen years ago)

imo it was hella dumb but at least it was hollywood-blockbuster hella dumb and not tired cop-show hella dumb

it got better ratings than anything except dancing with the stars

also lol i saw scott caan walking out of a movie theater last nite and he was wearing cargo shorts

*lets go* (gr8080), Thursday, 23 September 2010 02:59 (fifteen years ago)

totally ridiculous, but yeah in big dumb fun way. without the budget though i imagine subsequent episodes will settle into more tired cop-show.

No Good, Scrunty-Looking, Narf Herder (Gukbe), Thursday, 23 September 2010 03:16 (fifteen years ago)

that's the inside scoop-- they sunk a shitload of money into the pilot and the first few eps, but its gonna be hard to keep it up

*lets go* (gr8080), Thursday, 23 September 2010 03:17 (fifteen years ago)

Get yourself cast as a mysterious local DJ who knows where they do things.

Stars Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park have departed CBS’ “Hawaii Five-0.” Their characters, Chin Ho Kelly and Kono Kalakaua, will not appear in the upcoming eighth season. The characters’ absence will be referenced in the season premiere.

Sources tell Variety that Park and Kim had been seeking pay equality with stars Alex O’Loughlin and Scott Caan, but were unable to reach satisfactory deals with CBS Television Studios, which produces the series. CBS’s final offer to Kim and Park was believed to have been 10-15% lower than what O’Loughlin and Caan make in salary. O’Laughlin and Caan each have deals that also provide them percentage points on the show’s back end.

good for him. Fuck CBS btw. the white dudes on this show are boring as hell, and I've liked Caan in other stuff.

maybe there should have been a SPOILER ALERT!

Goofy the Grifter (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 4 December 2021 22:44 (four years ago)

Not for me because I’ve seen that episode like four times. Classic ending. When McGarrett dons the loud casual wear you know the bad guys are fucked.

Ha, I figured you would be the first responder.

I don’t know if this came up before but I have a vivid memory of my dad watching Dr. No. I didn’t know what it was but when I saw Jack Lord I just figured it was a really deluxe high budget probably multi-night episode of H5-0.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Lord#Career

In 1962, Lord starred as series namesake Stoney Burke,[21] a rodeo cowboy from Mission Ridge, South Dakota. The basis for the series was real-life champion rodeo rider Casey Tibbs.[22] The series featured Warren Oates and Bruce Dern in recurring supporting roles. Lord credited Gary Cooper as his on-screen role model,[9] and the inspiration for his characterization of Stoney Burke.
