why is there a bus in brighton with derek jameson written on the front? wtf?

so, yeah, we went to brighton yesterday. i've always thought, camden-by-the-sea, yadda yadda whatever, people move there to 'escape' london, but they all escape to the same damn place taking the worst bits of london with them. all the bad of london concentrated in a small area, with none of the good bits. but is this true? is it really that bad?

you know what? i don't know. i wasn't struck by the badness, more by the mediocrity, then theres the north lanes, cafes and second hand clothes. but thats good, right? no decent bookshops though, thought brighton wa\s supposed to be good for second hand books?

so, i didn't get any books, but i did get a new shirt, but more of that later

gareth, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

>why is there a bus in brighton with derek jameson written on the front? wtf?

there's a fatboy slim one aswell int there? i think it's something to do with a local council initiative to commemorate hometown boys who've come good. that is, presuming derek jameson is a brightoner. if he's not.. then... i don't know w(hy)tf.

nickie, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gareth, I've only ever heard you be nice about one bookshop, which is somewhere in the mythic (to me) land they call Stoke Newington. Do you think your standards may be unrealistically high?

I visited several bookshops which I when I was last in Brighton, although I only bought one book. I thought the shops seemed pretty decent, though.

Tim, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was in Brighton yesterday too! I really like it, go there a lot.

Tom, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i may have missed the bookshops, there were a couple that looked ok, but they were closed, which was quaint.

gareth, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Derek "Do they mean us?" Jameson lives in Brighton, yes.

Robin Carmody, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Visiting Brighton days before leaving = Biggest reason I dislike Manchester.

ILE Brighton Day Out Now!

Graham, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gareth, does Church Street books open on a Sunday then?

Tim, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, I think so.

N., Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm worried Tim is going to be horribly disappointed by Church St Books. It's not really that astonishing. It's just a nice local bookshop that has well selected stock (maybe a bit conservative, but this means it usually has what you want if you're after something in particular) and is quite cheap compared to many (eg. Ocean Books over the road)

N., Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, tim probably will be disappointed. it just happens to be around the corner from me, cheap, and usually has a book in i want. thats all

gareth, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

but the man in ocean books is very friendly/lonely and will talk the ear off you if you give him a chance. shops aren't just about the selling, you know.

More Brighton Beach Memoirs pls.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 25 July 2003 06:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Archel lives there, so obv Brighton rocks!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 25 July 2003 07:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Funny you should revive this Mary, there's a big Julie Birchill Brighton memoir in today's Guardian.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 25 July 2003 07:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Also mentalism about wireless internet access on the beach. Terrible idea.

Archel (Archel), Friday, 25 July 2003 07:48 (twenty-two years ago)

The whole of the G2 staff is obsessed with Brighton. So is the Observer. Just GO AWAY.

Archel (Archel), Friday, 25 July 2003 07:50 (twenty-two years ago)

brighton sucks

gareth (gareth), Friday, 25 July 2003 07:51 (twenty-two years ago)

As Julie says, living by the sea is the only way to keep sane in this life. Nobody's going to landlock me! Rar.

(There ARE a few good second-hand bookshops in Brighton, though the best one burnt down last year. Savery Books, Brighton Books, TwoWay Books, one on Duke St I can't remember the name of - all treasure troves. None of them open on Sundays but so what? Oxfam Books and British Heart Foundation Books & Music are new and fantastic.)

Archel (Archel), Friday, 25 July 2003 08:05 (twenty-two years ago)

But I don't understand people who visit a place just to buy more Things, anyway. I seem to not like Things very much these days, which is lucky because I can't afford them.

Archel (Archel), Friday, 25 July 2003 08:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i live in brighton, and the best book shop by far is the
British Heart Foundation charity book shop on London road.
Why? cos there are a lot of fools who only buy books cos
said books are 'cool' and dump them in the charity shop a
couple of months later unread.

this month i've got
2 john fante books (1.50 each)
bukowskis 1st book published in the uk (penguin modern poets 13 - 1.00)
2 murakami books (1.50 each)
a dan fante book with a fax from kevin sampson inside about the
blurb he's going to contribute to the back cover of the book and
the blurb on the back is faithfully reproduced! (1.00 i havent read
any kevin sampson, whats he like?)
a japanese graphic novel based on 2001 called 2001 nights (2.00)

there is more to brighton than the lanes, you know
(not that i get to much of it myself....)

joni, Friday, 25 July 2003 08:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Where are the good place to eat and drink and shop for clothes?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 25 July 2003 08:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Joni it might have been that they thought those books were rubbish!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 25 July 2003 08:24 (twenty-two years ago)

i told you they were fools!

joni, Friday, 25 July 2003 08:29 (twenty-two years ago)

The fools are the charity shop for not charging scalpers prices for Bukowski et al. - 'cult' authors = ker-ching!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 25 July 2003 08:31 (twenty-two years ago)

shhh....they might here you, i only live round the corner from them....

joni, Friday, 25 July 2003 08:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I do too. Are we neighbours joni?

Archel (Archel), Friday, 25 July 2003 08:48 (twenty-two years ago)

woo, wouldnt that be weird.....
we could tie string between two tins and have our own lo-fi ilxor!

joni, Friday, 25 July 2003 10:00 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
I really liked Brighton. It * was* like San Francisco. Pretty pastel Victorians. Oh dear though: I got taken to a horrible boho caff for lunch. Smoky smoky. I liked the decrepit pier; the working pier was a bit noisy -- I hear it is de rigeur to play REM's "Shiny Happy People" there. I am confused about sunbathing on rocks; I am torn is it zen or madness? My books says that Black Chapatis is the place to eat. Thoughts? Also, if anyone is in Brighton and they see a Miffy Dick Bruno doll and T-shirt could you tell me where? Shoulda got...

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 10:51 (twenty-two years ago)

The Black Chapati is favoured by the taxi-taking summer conference crowd. It is expensive, but apparently good. I wouldn't know. TERRIBLE location though, on the way to and from nowhere, next to a dodgy pizza place, some horrible flats and a launderette in a nasty fake urban leafy square thing. I just moved from there.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not a TERRIBLE location though, it is near The Duke of Yorks and also I live near there! but I suppose the immediate vicinity is a pretty bad example of prefab and traffic. I've wanted to try The Black Chapati for the last 2 years since I moved down here, it was third on my list after Paston Place and Terre a Terre, but my pay doesn't allow me to have really fancy dining more than once a year, I'm planning to visit sometime this autumn. Whereabouts have you moved to? Out of Brighton?

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, it's super fancy? For next time, where would you recommend eating fish & chips?

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Fish and Chips? Nowhere compares to Bardsley's on Baker Street (quite near The Black Chapati actually) which always seems to get into every 'top 50 places to eat fish in the UK' and they aren't coy about displaying this on every wall! But be warned they shut at 8.30, and they only open Tuesday (or maybe Wednesday) to Saturday. However, you can eat in if you want and BYO, and do a very wide range of fish (look on the blackboard for the specials). If in Hove and seeking a more standard chippie, seek out 'Seahorses' at the far-end of Blatchington Road - the second best in Brightonandhove!

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i might head down to one of the ONe Live events soon (Sean Paul w Dizzee at the Dome is particularly tempting) so a Brighton FAP is on the cards i hope...there ought to have been a proper one in the Summer but i forgot to suggest it (plus London ILE appears so very divided on whether Brighton is good or not)

and here's another reason why gareth (and other hataz) is WRONG: http://www.base58.com/misc/westpier.jpg

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

That was G's first port of call.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

what happened to the lo-fi ilxor?

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

before it collapsed it was better because there would always be enormous flocks of gulls swarming around the decrepid pier and it was a good excuse to stage Hitchcock-themed parties on the beach (okay that never happened but Brighton is still cool)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Madeline and I already have our Dizzee and Sean Paul tickets, and I took the night off work especialy for it, so it had better be as good as I hope it will be.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
Argh, I thought there was a thread about Brighton and hotels there and stuff but I can't find it, so I'll just revive this one instead.

I'm going to Brighton tomorrow for a gig. Since it turns out we're not recording (and I had such a good time in Kent last weekend) I think I might stay for the weekend.

Since it's off season, I assume I might not need a reservation for a hotel? Also, erm... FAP anyone?

Paranoid Spice (kate), Thursday, 20 October 2005 10:19 (twenty years ago)

I am totally clueless about hotels, but the Lion and Lobster does b&b and is also the second-best pub in Brighton.
http://www.lionandlobster.com/

I will definitely FAP with you there! Or somewhere else.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 20 October 2005 12:32 (twenty years ago)

I still have your phone number, so I will text you when I get up on Saturday. Damn, why can't I book online with that place? Bah. I hate ringing strangers.

Paranoid Spice (kate), Thursday, 20 October 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

Oh me too. I would conduct all transactions elctronically if I could. They are good though, so it might be worth it...

See you Sat maybe!

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 20 October 2005 12:36 (twenty years ago)

I'll be up for a drink if I'm allowed to come along (by the "missus", and you lot). Not too fond of the Lobster, but I'll put up with it.

Lion & Lobster is definitely cheap for rooms though.

Has anyone spoken with Nick B, Dave B or any other Brighton ilxors?

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Thursday, 20 October 2005 12:45 (twenty years ago)

B-b-but Dark Star! (Yes I know the Lobster is no Evening Star but it's closer to my house so...)

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 20 October 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

I will allow you to pick the pub, as I know nothing of Brighton.

Paranoid Spice (kate), Thursday, 20 October 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

I will be at an AFC Wimblydon game...

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 20 October 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to be going to the Hanbury Ballroom on Friday night:

http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?G2M?X=532668&Y=103694&A=Y&Z=1

How close is this to the B&B? I need to look it up. (Also, come and see Kevin Bletchdum if you fancy.)

Paranoid Spice (kate), Thursday, 20 October 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

Ah. Quite far from the Lobster (which is on Bedford Place). There *are* loads of B&Bs just off the seafront nearer the Hanbury end of town though - New Steine seems particularly full of them.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 20 October 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

They do Dark Star now? That's good... Hav e they got it since The Regency Tavern became 'The Evil Sheperd Neame Tavern' and stopped selling independent brews?

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Thursday, 20 October 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

Could be. I don't remember exatly when it was... the Regency was always a bit of a weird pub anyway.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 20 October 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

Let’s make a Twitter post instead just to post on ILX :)

Chewshabadoo, Sunday, 10 April 2022 14:09 (three years ago)

Booooo. Nick, please come to Hastings, I'd love to see you, though if you can't make it then there will be a Brighton date in October (come to both, come to both). I probably shouldn't say but there is a possibility that the October date will officially be the last. We haven't fully decided but it seems improbable that we can carry on with everyone spread out.

emil.y, Sunday, 10 April 2022 14:35 (three years ago)

Flying visit to Brighton over the next couple of days. Anyone got any good food recommendations? We're staying pretty central and would like to keep it relatively cheap... Not fussed about style so much, so place/reputation as much as the style of food, if that makes sense. Thanks!

Shard-borne Beatles with their drowsy hums (Chinaski), Tuesday, 11 April 2023 08:41 (two years ago)

Welcome to Brighton! By relatively cheap is £10-15 for a main OK? A good road for eating is Preston Street, quite near the i360 tower and West Pier ruins

* Some of the best ramen you can get in the UK is at Goemon Ramen Bar (Their sister place KitoKito near the train station does good Poke too)
* Awesome Neopolitan pizza at Nanninella
* Great noodles at Shaanxi

If you want any specific reccommendations I’ll be able to offer more suggestions :)

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 11 April 2023 10:56 (two years ago)

Thank you, Chewshabadoo. We had to wing it in the end. We were staying at the end of East Street, and it was shitting it down, so we stayed local: drank in the Walrus and ate in the Curry Leaf Cafe which was lovely and pretty reasonable tbh. I've bagged your recommendations for next time!

Shard-borne Beatles with their drowsy hums (Chinaski), Wednesday, 12 April 2023 17:40 (two years ago)

We are also in Brighton - well, Hove - for a couple of days, so appreciate the recs too, Chewshbs.

Piedie Gimbel, Wednesday, 12 April 2023 20:53 (two years ago)

My pleasure.

Not been to Curry Leaf for a while but it has always been a safe option.

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 13 April 2023 09:08 (two years ago)

When I'm in Brighton I go to the Regency Restaurant for the mussels and scallops, if that's your sort of thing.

Camaraderie at Arms Length, Thursday, 13 April 2023 09:13 (two years ago)

Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 30 May 2025 12:58 (six months ago)

I always like to go to the Regency, it's next to the beach and they have good seafood and also just chips or sth if your kid is fussy.

also like Tayler swift as she can relate to my cat (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 30 May 2025 13:06 (six months ago)

Thanks! We stumbled to the wrong place at first - the Regency Pub, a few blocks north - disaster with a hot, hangry kid (and parents). Then, like a gorgeous mirage, the actual proper Regency loomed into view, and had a free table with a window seat facing the sea, and we all had a seriously lovely time. So thanks again!
