Do you have a weird guilt reflex that crops up on those occasions when you find yourself simply "enjoying" life? Do you feel bad when you are not pursuing a work ethic, "useful" tasks, etc.? Do you notice in yourself an ingrained suspicion of pleasure, whether associated with food, sex, intoxication, etc.? Beyond even "pleasure", do you feel undeserving of simply being loved or being "happy"? Were you raised under the auspices of Roman Catholicism?

xpost
Do you mean "classic" in the Woody Allen "sex is only dirty if it's done right" sense? Or classic like, get over those silly neuroses?
― dell, Saturday, 29 December 2007 23:51 (eighteen years ago)
sorry you are catholic. that blows.
― elan, Saturday, 29 December 2007 23:52 (eighteen years ago)
i only feel guilt when i'm not being hedonistic, so i try to enjoy myself as often as possible.

Wurl, I'm not Catholic present-tense...but was (desultorily, even?) raised as such. But, somehow I think I managed to inculcate myself with all kinds of unhealthy attitudes in the process.
That approach sounds potentially genius in its own way, though.
Agh, actually I think my greater "challenge" lies in the area of being cruel to myself or self-hating in some sense on a psychological level, which I guess is a different issue altogether from feeling guilt about idling about with grapes being dangled into my mouth

or being a laurel-crowned robot snacking on caviar, or whatever

I am a real Catholic and opposed to all pleasures that don't come with two free scoops of guilt
― J0hn D., Sunday, 30 December 2007 00:40 (eighteen years ago)
I don't know what I am but I'm opposed to all fear of pleasure.

i wish i cld do copious amounts of drugs and debauched sex guilt free but even tho i am atheist i still have that catholic guilt in me. grrrrrrr
― stevienixed, Sunday, 30 December 2007 02:52 (eighteen years ago)
I have plenty of guilt and I've never been Catholic. I don't think it's an ex-Catholic thing.
― Curt1s Stephens, Sunday, 30 December 2007 02:54 (eighteen years ago)
The guilt kind of multiplies up the copious drugs and detached sex score, But I M ignoring the subjective score
― Noodle Vague, Sunday, 30 December 2007 02:55 (eighteen years ago)
curtis, don't saddle me w more self guilt. ;-)
― stevienixed, Sunday, 30 December 2007 02:56 (eighteen years ago)
I have no guilt unless the hedonism is at an expense. My only regrets are that I haven't let myself go nearly as much as I ought to have done.
― Just got offed, Sunday, 30 December 2007 02:57 (eighteen years ago)
Were you raised under the auspices of Roman Catholicism?
Yes, I was. However, am v happy to report that I don't feel any of those sentiments you listed. At all.
― ENBB, Sunday, 30 December 2007 02:58 (eighteen years ago)
I was/still am raised in a secular yet incredibly moral household, which has naturally precluded me from partaking in too much outright hedonism, if not deterred me.

No. No (unless i'm being lazy or something). No. No. Not raised but educated.
