I'm not a fan: pubs charging just to get in the door, big queues at the bar, woohoo another year and got nothing done. If you're going to a party you're okay as long as you remember to stock up on booze and cigs. Anything else: what's the point?

But spending the evening in playing Mario Party with the kids = classic.

I dunno, my friends rent out a small neighborhood bar every year, charge maybe $5 at the door (so the bar can provide some snacks and champagne), and we hook up an iPod for the night (complete with the "musicians who died this year" playlist). Usually a pretty good time.

Oh man, that is kind of a curse! Happy birthday, though! But then I actually feel kinda the same way about my birthday, so possibly having them on the same night would be kinda two birds / one stone! I am using exclamation points!

My worst New Year's Eve turnout was ... I think 2001? Because I got roped into paying a bunch of money to go to some giant party, but by the time we bought tickets there were only VIP slots available, but then everyone got the VIP tickets, which means that the line to get drinks in the VIP section was about 45 minutes long (I got TWO DRINKS, ALL NIGHT), whereas the general area was totally empty and you could get drinks straight away, but then we were apparently too important for them to let us go over and do that. If I could remember which friend instigated the giant-party plan, I would fire off a really angry retrospective email right now. (And yet the night was a fun one, to be honest.)

hahaha wow. i think one of my winners would be the year i had to fly out to philly for my grandmother's funeral, then flew back home to rochester at like 10 pm, rushed home from the airport, changed, went to gay club where i drank as fast as i could to make up for lost time, new year's toast, went to other bar where i was served a pint glass sized long island which then led me to stand outside in the snow with no coat to talk to boy on the phone for an hour. then my roommate drove me home and i puked. great times.

Actually, I've had some really good New Year's this century. The worst one may have been going into '04 since my future wife was in New York and I was stuck at a backyard party in Little Rock.

the best NY was probably a party at my friend's house...we had a sit-down dinner w/seafood gumbo, then a dance party and a spontaneous second line parade through the neighborhood at midnight, then more dancing. ice cream sundaes for breakfast.

Best NYE = C4rry 0n Up the Ch4rts celebration party in pub + shroomz.

Wife + me have been a bit too slack in inviting ppl to our yearly party this time, which combined with 1) lots of people here being sick this xmas, and 2) many of our friends having become parents last couple of years, augurs a rather reduced turnout. Totally fine by me personally really, just hope those who do come don't get all disappointed or anything.

i hate NYE but otoh i have just got more dressed up than i ever have been for an NYE just to go down to local bar (for tonight's spag western theme).

NYE is a great bonus to an event you'd otherwise care about a lot, but as an end unto itself is pretty ignorable

pros: there are usually better bands and bills in town, and also the bar might have food.

We've just returned from a cider farm having purchased a 5 gallon barrel of the roughest, cloudiest fermented apple juice somerset has to offer.

That combined with JungleBook dance mat on the PS2 and a rousing game of Articulate guarantees a low pressure, relatively inexpensive evening.

Wish I'd been able to find GuitarHero3 in town earlier tho.

I now pretty much refuse to do anything that isn't a house party these days. A truckload of booze will probably help as well.

House parties are pretty great, especially when the floor caves in underneath the dancers.

apparently someone coming to the party i'm going to is a sommelier, and the host is a beer importer. my friend has already told me she plans on making me manhattans. i think i will be wasted by like 10.

fuck nye. so overhyped. i dont really get why the passing of one year to the next is such a big deal to begin with. but i like the socialising aspect. the paying extortionate prices to get in bars or clubs and get even more extortionate drinks, not so much. which is why im going to a house party this year. the pressure to pull at nye is more intense than the pressure to have fun. which is why i dont give a shit about nye this year. tis just another party.

july 4 imposes a communal obligation rather than an individual one

yeah, july 4th mandates grilling out so it pretty much wins over anything.

But make the best of it, dudes! Twilight Zone, Law and Order: Criminal Intent AND Honeymooners marathons! Stay in, drink up, watch TV, zone out - fall asleep before midnight if you can.

ditched by dude friend for another girl; there goes NYE kiss. forgot it was midnight because we were dancing to "funkytown." bought tinfoil frog sculpture from man on street. drank a lot of whiskey. passed out sometime after 2, woke up at 8:30 and somehow managed to be at breakfast at 9:30.

best NYE was still 1999 into 2000, senior year of high school, smoking unbelievable amounts of marijuana, ridiculous jam session and singalong, in a hunting lodge in backwoods maine.

2008 was my second really great one in a row. I actually don't mind NYE, but I refuse to feel any pressure to have a good time.

my NYE was great. i got drunk, saw friends, relatives, people i didnt know and did poor salsa dancing. also learnt i have two admirers in the form of a gay man and an extremely cute 15 year old. im not gay and im im not young enough (or inclined in that r kelly kinda way) for either but it was nice to know anyway.

Thx! Time spent making costume: probably about six days. Time spent wearing the full thing: less than half an hour (couldn't eat or drink with head on).

Robot dancing to Daft Punk wearing robot costume = AWESOME. I had an epiphany, a whole new understanding of the Daft Punk programme. It really is robot music for robots (even if it works for people too).

Sadly the plan to have martini on tap inside the costume body didn't come off (had a camelbak full of martini but couldn't manage to put the costume on over the top of the rucksack).

We sensibly stayed at home, had a couple of friends over and drank vast lakes of beer until about 6am, by which time I was drunk enough to go to bed still wearing 1 contact lense.

Went for greasy spoon breakfast and somehow seemed to avoid getting a hangover, although I'm suffering a bit today, delayed reaction/having to get up at 7am for the first time in nearly 2 weeks :(

OMG Grady I think I was wearing that creepy silver mask on NYE. I had to steal it from the seven foot dude also wearing a black cloak because frankly he was too scary otherwise.

i always have fun ON new years, or at least, usually, but i hate the 2-3 weeks of planning that goes on cuz it always gets thrown out at the last minute anyway

I've realized that this year, due to my plan to visit my family over New Year's and all of my hometown friends being gone, I have to resign myself to going to bed around 11 PM with the parents or going out with my brother and his creepy friends. It is a hard choice.

actually the last couple new years have been pretty lame too. two years ago i went on a trip with my boyfriend at the time that we'd planned well in advance, visiting some of his friends, but by the time we left we were in "are we breaking up?" territory. and then last year i was on a bus from boston to nyc and it broke down at a rest stop in connecticut for four or five hours, so we made it to the party in ny around 12:30 (which was at least early enough that everybody hadn't gone home) and i proceeded to make up for lost time and give myself literally the worst hangover of my life.

so maybe bed at 11 isn't such a bad idea.

another transatlantic flight on new year's day (same last year, cheapest day to fly at that time of year). fallen out with someone back home which will make the pub near my folk's place that i usually go to off limits. this one is going to be laaaaaame.

Also my birthday, also in winter, also almost always during periods of ~change~, so this day is usually a complete depresso mindfuck of "wtf r u doin w/ yr life" punctuated by drinking and anticlimax.

I used to date someone who's birthday was new year's day (mine's eve, if not clear) so midnight just had way, waaaaaay too much expected 'meaning'

Even if you just stay in there's no escape; drunk people yowling outside, atrocious TV, bleh.

It's especially bad in Scotland because lots of ppl here take it as a point of national pride to get v drunk and act like fannies.

(Saying that, best one I ever had was staying in with gf until 11.30, then suddenly changing our minds and going on a club and bar crawl and getting hammered fast.)

I am looking forward to it in Texas this year because it's rained enough that the really good fireworks will be available for purchase. I am going to blow an entire paycheck on fireworks.

Even if it's not yr birthday there's still a whole "now you must summarise your achievements of the year and yr aspirations for the next one" vibe going on which is great for the "wtf r u doin" depressofucks. Plus as noted there seems to be pressure on for everyone to have BEST NIGHT OF YEAR which is doomed to failure.

And unless you live in major city there are no (or v. few) buses on, taxis are like gold dust and charging 4x the normal rate, nobody wants to stay sober and drive other people around (fair enough, nor would I) and walking is too full of aggressive drunks everywhere to feel like much fun, so either the whole thing is a logistical nightmare or you resign yrself to going to that weird kind of shitty place round the corner and being stared at by the locals because it's the only place in walking distance.

The place I went to 2 years ago and actually had an A+++ NYE is not doing it because no staff want to work on NYE, so the only offer we have had so far is a party which I figure there is a good chance my least favourite ex will be at (<-- still in 0% chance of good time in same building as ex territory), but obviously I do not wish to appear bitter enough to have to ask the organisers if he's going
