big new year's party im hosting tonight
cold coming on
how do i buy time??
― s1ocki, Monday, 31 December 2007 20:07 (eighteen years ago)
I JUST NEED ONE MORE DAY.
― s1ocki, Monday, 31 December 2007 20:14 (eighteen years ago)
You could try some of that COLD-EEZE stuff. A lot of people swear by plain Vitamin C. (Anything that you try might give you some placebo effect, too.)
Even if you do nothing but take Advil, Sudafed, and a cup of hot herbal tea, you'll probably feel better for doing *something.* And those things usually do help me.
Added to that, if you're an extrovert you will be all buoyed by a lot of company and the adrenaline of throwing a party... good luck!
― Sara R-C, Monday, 31 December 2007 20:55 (eighteen years ago)
zicam - same concept as cold-eeze in that it's zinc heavy. and yeah, emergen-c can give you a little boost maybe because it usually has a lot of b vitamins too.
― tehresa, Monday, 31 December 2007 20:59 (eighteen years ago)
and a really hot shower
thanks dudes.
this has actually happened to me on more than one occasion. usually i end up going out and "partying thru" until teh end of the night where i feel like shit.
WOOHOO NEW YEARS!!
― s1ocki, Monday, 31 December 2007 21:15 (eighteen years ago)
when I feel a cold coming on I usually just start acting like I have a bad cold already (wear lots of layers, drink hot beverages and lots of water, vitamins, etc.) as a preemptive strike, and it usually does seem to at least delay the inevitable a couple days, although I don't know if it weakens or shortens the cold once it gets going.
― Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 31 December 2007 21:19 (eighteen years ago)
take 3 zicams, 1 dosage of airborne, and 2 large glasses of emergen-C. repeat every 3-4 hours, and drink juice in between
honestly, i've put it off like this 4-5 days. after the suppression though when i let my guard down it came back ferociously
― Vichitravirya_XI, Monday, 31 December 2007 21:21 (eighteen years ago)
also: go to sleep as much as you can between now and your party
― Vichitravirya_XI, Monday, 31 December 2007 21:23 (eighteen years ago)
what are zicams?
what is airborne?
― s1ocki, Monday, 31 December 2007 21:33 (eighteen years ago)
also can anyone recommend a symptom-suppressing med that won't fuck with me if i get my drink on??
i really can't say enough good about zicam. that stuff works. that, some vitamin c, lots of liquids and you might circumvent the whole cold-having problem completely.
And if you can stand it (and its anti-social effects) garlic-press a clove or two and choke it down with some OJ.
― will, Monday, 31 December 2007 21:35 (eighteen years ago)
Zicam - a variety of cold & flu meds, but I assume the people on here are talking about the immune-boosting zinc chews.
― will, Monday, 31 December 2007 21:36 (eighteen years ago)
i heard something about cayenne and honey and garlic, too?
xpost
― tehresa, Monday, 31 December 2007 21:36 (eighteen years ago)
You probably don't want to mix cold drugs with alcohol (god, especially don't mix alcohol and acetominophen/Tylenol - VERY bad for yr liver). But plain Vitamin C does have an antihistimine effect for some people, and probably that is okay with booze.
You might want to take it easy on the booze if you're getting a cold; it can dehydrate you and make everything worse.
Actually, drink a lot of water regardless of any of the rest of this.
― Sara R-C, Monday, 31 December 2007 21:37 (eighteen years ago)
i know booze will only make things worse in the long run... but hey... it's new year's!
― s1ocki, Monday, 31 December 2007 21:38 (eighteen years ago)
You probably don't want to mix cold drugs with alcohol
agreed 100%. Frankly I try to avoid them anyway, they make me loopy and don't really seem to shorten the virus' cycle.
― will, Monday, 31 December 2007 21:40 (eighteen years ago)
Cold drugs aren't meant to shorten the life of the virus; just to make you feel better. They treat the symptoms, and that is it.
If you can get away with not taking them, I say go for it! The hot shower/hot tea/vitamin C might be enough for the night, depending on the severity of the cold.
― Sara R-C, Monday, 31 December 2007 21:44 (eighteen years ago)
airborne & emergen-c = placebo
'created by a schoolteacher' my ass
― and what, Monday, 31 December 2007 21:45 (eighteen years ago)
ten bucks you spend on bullshit homeopathic non-FDA approved cold 'remedies' is ten bucks you could spend on drinks to forget you even have a cold
― and what, Monday, 31 December 2007 21:46 (eighteen years ago)
i'm pretty skeptical of that stuff myself... but I DONT WANNA GET A COLD TONIGHT CUZ PARTY
― s1ocki, Monday, 31 December 2007 21:53 (eighteen years ago)
nah i know man i have been tempted by the emergen-c myself after reading noize endorsements but that shit is fake as fuck

just make out with a bunch of ppl so in a couple days everyone will have it and your concept of 'health' will change in context.
― gff, Monday, 31 December 2007 22:01 (eighteen years ago)
120mg pseudoephedrine + coffee. Repeat as needed.
― libcrypt, Monday, 31 December 2007 22:01 (eighteen years ago)
in other advice news, i am unpacking books at my new place and i am considering organizing the spines on my shelves by colour. is that cool or douchey
― s1ocki, Monday, 31 December 2007 22:03 (eighteen years ago)
i don't know much about Airborne, but it seems that vit C & zinc supplements (both of which are in Airborne) have a fair amount of research behind them in the way of shortening the duration of or fending off colds completely.
but agreed on the echinacea, saw palmetto, St John's Wort or whatever. I wouldn't spend any money on it.
― will, Monday, 31 December 2007 22:03 (eighteen years ago)
weed
― elan, Monday, 31 December 2007 22:05 (eighteen years ago)
you won't get high but you'll feel fine
xpost Re: your books. Cool if you only have a few books; seriously problematic if you have a library full of books and a poor memory for what color the spines all are.
I went to library school for a while and worked at a bookstore for a long time, though, so I'm completely anal about book organization.

do not do
― and what, Monday, 31 December 2007 22:07 (eighteen years ago)
i am definitely not going to organize them any other way. besides placing cool and sexy books (nabokov hardcovers) prominently at eye level and uncool and nerdy books (sci-fi paperbacks) on the bottom shelves.
― s1ocki, Monday, 31 December 2007 22:09 (eighteen years ago)
As long as you can find them again, you're good. I had a friend with an extensive c.d. collection who re-organized it by color of the c.d. spine. It looked pretty, but was pretty much a disaster otherwise.
PS some people find sci-fi paperbacks to be cool and sexy
― Sara R-C, Monday, 31 December 2007 22:11 (eighteen years ago)
my books aren't organized either. and my show-off-y books are in the guest bedroom.
― horseshoe, Monday, 31 December 2007 22:13 (eighteen years ago)
yeah maybe you should organize your shelves as if youre trying to get to 3rd base with gzeus

― s1ocki, Monday, 31 December 2007 22:14 (eighteen years ago)
xp lol
wait- horseshoe has a GUEST BEDROOM??
― and what, Monday, 31 December 2007 22:16 (eighteen years ago)
ha. I have an absurdly huge apartment. I use it as an office most of the time.
― horseshoe, Monday, 31 December 2007 22:17 (eighteen years ago)
eh. as far as i know, vit c has a few study results that indicate that it might shorten the duration of a cold and many that say it doesn't do much of anything. megadoses can cause GI issues. airborne is a total scam. here's what an abc news report said about the study that the manufacturer claims proved its effectiveness:
GNG [the "pharmaceutical" study company} is actually a two-man operation started up just to do the Airborne study. There was no clinic, no scientists and no doctors. The man who ran things said he had lots of clinical trial experience. He added that he had a degree from Indiana University, but the school says he never graduated.
― lauren, Monday, 31 December 2007 22:44 (eighteen years ago)
So Zicam is homoepathic?
If you really want to spend $, go to a doctor and get a prescription of amoxicillin
― Vichitravirya_XI, Monday, 31 December 2007 22:46 (eighteen years ago)
how will an antibiotic help with a virus?
― s1ocki, Monday, 31 December 2007 22:48 (eighteen years ago)
p.s. - feel better and have an awesome party, dude!
― lauren, Monday, 31 December 2007 22:49 (eighteen years ago)
thanks dude!!!
should be fun. my third or fourth year in a row doing the casa party. always good times there.
― s1ocki, Monday, 31 December 2007 22:52 (eighteen years ago)
When I was in China, we could buy amoxicillin over the counter; I started coming down with a really virulent cold infection once and one of my hosts bought me some. Within a day I was sound. Of course, maybe it wasn't really "amoxicillin"
― Vichitravirya_XI, Monday, 31 December 2007 22:54 (eighteen years ago)
Stave it off however you can, s1ocki. My cold moved in a month ago and won't leave, like a deadbeat roommate.
― James Redd and the Blecchs, Monday, 31 December 2007 23:18 (eighteen years ago)
i'm pretty pro this option though gff's option sounds fun too - you can mix the options and take some vit c and zinc hey why not and drink a lot of water, pos with lemon and honey in btwn beers
i may see you later on! will gauge yr health by what tunes you play
i have only ever organized my bookshelves by theme/content
― rrrobyn, Tuesday, 1 January 2008 00:13 (eighteen years ago)

― James Redd and the Blecchs, Tuesday, 1 January 2008 00:39 (eighteen years ago)
ya, i generally resort to jameson in these cases.
rrrobyn you should come by. cheapest friendliest NYE non-house party in town.
― s1ocki, Tuesday, 1 January 2008 00:43 (eighteen years ago)
just took a dose of DayQuil, a B6/B12 vitamin, multivitamin, a Claritin and am dissolving a Zicam as I type
I suspect this will not have me feeling better in time to do anything.
― milo z, Tuesday, 1 January 2008 01:08 (eighteen years ago)
