ello babies, well mrs carsmile has gone and got herself a job at the soon to open Borders in islington which basically gives us about 5 weeks to find somewhere new to live (pref north london, pref 1 bed flat) and also for me to find a job, although flat is more important as i could (just about) commute for a short while. so yeah, HELP!!!! please :)

CarsmileSteve, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oh yeah, job for me would be admin (6 years experience) in education, or other public sector-type thing. any good agencies out there?

CarsmileSteve, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

wahey!

good luck mate.

chris, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and thinking on your question, flats are going to be tricky, I'll have a look at the prices in the stow when I go home tonight although I think the prices may be starting to rise round my way now.

I fear it may be a question of how much you can afford to pay deciding whereabouts you get a place.

If you find a good agency let me know, I'll be needing onbe in a few months time.

chris, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

are the prices going up cos you're going away, hahaha ha [ahem]. spose really somewhere northern line-y would be handy, as borders is near Angel tube, apparently.

carsmilesteve, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Check yr email, Steve (though it might be too expensive - what's your budget?)

N., Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

you could go way up north on the northern line? not sure how expensive Finchley is.

Highbury & Islington is also a 5 minute walk up Upper Street away, which brings the Victoria line into play.

chris, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

which brings the Victoria line into play

hehe i like it when Chris goes all unconsciously football commentator! welcome in anticipation of your arrival in Londinium Carsmile!

katie, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

MarkH, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

at the end of the day Katie, I can only say it how I see it.

chris, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I believe that me & Ptee have already told you what to do, ahem, advised you on this matter matey. Why does no-one listen to us and our pearls of wisdom?

Cabbage turns into Roy Walker shockah

RickyT, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

this site might be helpful too: NISS

jel --, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i lke the idea that living near another station on the northern line will make it easier to get to angel... er hullo have you ever USED the northern line (ans = no, no one has ever used it because it is ALWAYS NOT RUNNING!) (it needs a high colonic)

mark s, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I hate the way it anastomoses.

MarkH, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

thank you mark, i've been using jobs.ac.uk for a while, it's pretty good. thank you peteandemma, your comments from the other evening will be taken on board. thank you N. that doesn't seem too outrageous for a flat (we're paying £150 in oxford!). thank you everyone else, will let you know on progress :)

carsmilesteve, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There are always jobs going at SOAS Steve. Then you can join the great cabal (and we need decent Unison stewards) - and if you work in our other building in Kings Cross you could meet Meg for lunch too. Aaaahhhh.

Pete, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

really Pete? I'll remember that when I come back ;-)

d'you know, I haven't done a stroke of work today.

chris, Monday, 11 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

***UPDATE***

we have a house!! in Crouch End!!! coincidentally, just round the corner from pete & emma!!!!!

CarsmileSteve, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Joy. There go those quiet nights in. But the Pub Quizzes of Crouch End will learn to ph34r us.

Pete, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's all like some mad sitcom.

Ronan, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe the minor soap stars of Crouch End play 'spot the ILEer' just as I play spot the minor soap stars.

Emma, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd love to see Sgt Boyden of The Bill going into anaphalyactic shock pointing at you Emma going "Is it - is it Emmaluvscake!"

Pete, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey if THAT worked can anyone find me/Lixi/co-worker (who will be the extremely odd one out) a nice and cheap 3 bedroom flat too please? London? Please?

Sarah, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Ronan is right, this is turning into a sitcom. And a bad one at that. Anyone else wanna move to Crouch End?

Emma, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yah. Isabel wants South London though, what are the special features of Crouch End I should use to tempt her with?

Tom, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha yuppie typo.

Tom, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Special features of Crouch End in no particular order: 1. ME 2. minor soap stars esp. from Family Affairs 3. minor Bill stars 4. assorted other minor slebz 5. quite decent pubs 6. variety of restaurants 7. great buses er....... and much much more.

Emma, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Obviously the sitcom is crouchenders. Tensions are high in episode 1 as Pete mocks Carsmiles umbrella.

Ronan, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Are there any parks or tree-ish bits anywhere in Crouch End? That might swing it. Or a hedgehog rescue station or something.

Tom, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There's some funny nature walk thing along what is possibly a disused rail track (Pete? Is this right?) but I have always avoided it as it looks like Rapist's Paradise. Alexandra Palace is only a 20 minute walk from ours and that is green and has trees and is perfect for a picnic on a Saturday afternoon in the summer.

Emma, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Parkland walk of course - a two mile swathe of countryide in the heart of the city stretching from Archway to Finsbury Park - on a disused you really feel like you are walking through woodland when there. Not to mention the huge and rambling Highgate Woods which are very near by.

There's also the dodgy park at the bottom of the hill where murderers lurk, but we don't talk about that for it is Upper Holloway. (cf Jonathon Green's Dictionary of Slang).

Pete, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I live slap next to Highgate Woods. I look down on Crouch End!

Jonnie, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Only if you live on the hill. Apparently there is a weird cafe in Highgate Woods which has no menus and you have to pay the man the exact change otherwise he batters you round the head with a cricket bat.

There's the Lido in the summer as well.

Pete, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

7. great buses

My dad used to get one of them to work, the 41 from Turnpike Lane to Archway. When he retired from his job at the Whittington Hospital they made him a cake in the shape of the 41 bus, because he was always complaining about the poor quality of the sevice.

My sister used to live in Uplands Road which lived up to its name by being very, very steep. In fact, she claimed that it was the steepest residential road in London.

MarkH, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what tube do you crouchenders use anyway? archway? highgate? finsbury park?

gareth, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tube. Gareth what kind of cloud cooookoooo land are you living in. Crouch end is the home of THE BUS. Though if you want Archway tube is like ten minute walk and Finsbury Park is 15 minutes. The 41 is one of Ken's favourite buses and is now unrecognisable as a route from two years ago (nice new buses etc etc.)

I wuv the 91 though. Crouch End to Trafalgar Square via my work. and happy yellow cheeks.

Pete, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Pete I know I don't walk very quickly as I enjoy looking at the scenery or whatever but it takes me 30 mins to walk to Finsbury Park of a morning so I reckon the average punter would be pushing it to do 20 let alone 15. And Archway is a good 15 once you've crossed all those dodgy roads.

Emma, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i live in cloud cuckoo land, where there are 2 tube stations with 2 tube lines, and many nice buses too. i know nothing of crueshond, i do not venture north of stroud green road

gareth, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm going to Finchley tonight, I have a horrible feeling that this is the furthest I will have been from the centre of London since I went to Chesterfield at Christmas.

chris, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

actually, i used to live in finchley

gareth, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Best feature of crouch end is La Porchetta pizza place.

Ed, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ed, La Porchetta is in Muswell Hill or on Stroud Green Road not in Crouch End.

Emma, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If you want to have some fun at the expense of a c-list celebrity, call Sean Hughes' dog when he is out walking it. The dog is called Bill.

suzy, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Presumably the dog is the c list sleb since Sean would be lucky to get onto the f list these days.

Emma, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

C list celeb = someone you would call a cunt.
F list celeb = someone you would tell to fuck off.

If I saw Sean Hughes I'd say "Fuck Off cunt". So what does that make him?

Pete, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So what does that make him?

A C list celeb/ DJ on the very disappointing 6Music.

DJ Martian, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

three weeks pass...
***UPDATE***

we are moving to crouch end/upper holloway (teehee) tomorrow, meg starts her new job on monday, and i have an interview at SOAS (*not* working for ptee i hasten to add) next thursday, which is nice. what's not so nice is the thought of at least two weeks of commuting, grrrrrrrr, oh well, better than a something that's not very nice.

CarsmileSteve, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You can always stay at Tom's. The sofa-bed and the flies are very nice.

Pete, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ALL THE FLIES HAVE GONE.

Tom, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have been informed by my lawyers that I am no longer allowed to make comedy jokes about the flies in Tom's flat. Tom's flat is now, and for the near future will be, clear of flies and any other insects. Any suggestion that his flat now suffers from any form of infestation was merely for comedic value and - having been made aware of the offence and potentially libellous nature of these remarks I withdraw them whole-heartedly and with a sincere apology to Mr Tom Ewing. (Lord Of The Flies.)

Pete, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's my understanding that the flies have departed due to an infestation of spiders chez Ewing. Unfortunately the spiders seem to have developed the habit of wriggling and jiggling and rumours suggest an impending introduction of birds to deal with this problem.

Oxford's cat, dog and horse traders have been alerted to a possible business opportunity.

Tim, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am now visibly grimacing as I think what infestation Lixi and Tom in the same house will attract. Perhaps she will finally get pigeons to ride on.

Graham, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I do not think I will ever stop laughing at Tim's last post!

alext, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Communal living will force me to mend my lazy ways and do things like actually emptying the bins (which was the cause of the fly horror).

Tom, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This is why, Tom, referring to the other thread, that people have BUTLERS.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)
