I don't get it. Queee?
― Jesse, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 21:23 (seventeen years ago)
it's part of a quote taking from nelson algren's epic poem Chicago: A City on the Make.
― chicago kevin, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 21:27 (seventeen years ago)
or taken, whichever you prefer.
Jesse, was it you who said the Sweeney Todd movie had too much singing? cuz I got an email from a major Theatre Gay I know, and he writes "with a lot of the music missing it comes across as pretty thin." So count your blessings.
I find that given the lousy dialogue/plot in even top B'way musicals, more music is best.
― Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 21:28 (seventeen years ago)
It's what I get for attending a musical.
― Jesse, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 21:29 (seventeen years ago)
There was an interesting (if too wide-ranging) program on PBS last night about music in theatre/film. Sondheim's discussion of "Send in the Clowns" made me appreciate that song more, or at least the original Glynis Johns version of it.
― jaymc, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 21:35 (seventeen years ago)
yeah, that song has been clubbed to death by overexposure.
― Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 21:38 (seventeen years ago)
I hadn't heard it that much, and when I do hear it, it really gets to me. Not joking about that.
― Jesse, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 21:39 (seventeen years ago)
Hadn't heard it that much until recently. That was a bad sentence.
― Jesse, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 21:40 (seventeen years ago)
I saw Van Morrison do it live once, and he made the finish "Don't bother, they're here, motherfuckers."
― Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 21:42 (seventeen years ago)
It's a great song, but of course it's not beyond ruining. Sinatra = yes. Streisand = no no no.
― kenan, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 21:43 (seventeen years ago)
Something about the way Sinatra sings, "Isn't it rrrrrrich?" with just a little extra bitter punctuation is really perfect.
― kenan, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 21:44 (seventeen years ago)
I also really love the rest of the score of A Little Night Music, so it's disappointing that that one song is the only one that became well-known outside of the show (though tbh, I'm not sure how most would even make sense outside of the show).
― jaymc, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 21:45 (seventeen years ago)
I don't understand what it is about Streisand that attracts gay men. I get Liza, Madonna, etc. But was Streisand a really dramatic figure in some way?
― Jesse, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 21:45 (seventeen years ago)
Her nose is dramatic.
― jaymc, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 21:48 (seventeen years ago)
Yentl?
― KitCat, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 21:49 (seventeen years ago)
I need to draft a boilerplate letter of non-engagement for insane people seeking legal representation. I think the gist of it should be: "Neither you nor our law firm are real."
― Jesse, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 21:54 (seventeen years ago)
I don't mind EARLY Streisand so much. She was unusual in 1962-70 for having "ethnic" looks for a pop star.

one of her husbands was a bad hairdresser, I think.
― Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 22:22 (seventeen years ago)
Huh. It's been quite a long while since I've thought to physically objectify Barbra. Each day is full of mystery, innit?
― kenan, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 22:24 (seventeen years ago)
Anyway, like I was saying, I don't much care for her version of Send in the Clowns. Judy Collins gets the sad part across, and has a wilting blossom quality; Frank does my favorite version, sounding kinda pissed off but too sad and tired to do anything about it; and Barbra sounds merely professional. It's not a BAD version of the song, it just seems that she didn't bring anything to it besides Barbra-ness. At which I shrug.

Aw man, not enough bodies on the dance floor, eh? I hope they let you finish your set at least. Maybe they're hiring at the Admiral, though the dancers get to pick most of the songs for themselves.
― Eazy, Thursday, 3 January 2008 00:41 (seventeen years ago)
haha not that job ... i wish that was full time
― deej, Thursday, 3 January 2008 00:44 (seventeen years ago)
speaking of im going 'there' tonight if anyone wants to buy me a drink :(
not the admiral
I was picturing you playing Special Ed's "I Got It Made" or something, and the manager pulling the plug and firing you, then putting on "Oh What A Night!" as the dance floor fills up...
― Eazy, Thursday, 3 January 2008 00:49 (seventeen years ago)

The fake comments on those are really kind of funny. Why would you buy an insulated boot to go hiking in Costa Rica?

i stand corrected, wikipedia tells me costa rica is home to central america's FIFTH highest peak. i wonder if that travel guide that told me it was the highest defined "central america" differently? or were they just outright lying to me?

I used to have a bookmark for a site selling Army/Navy surplus pairs of the standard paratrooper winter boots in WHITE. I think I've lost it now, though.
― Laurel, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 17:20 (seventeen years ago)
This looks super-sloppy because I had to doctor an existing map of wards, but I thought this might be interesting:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2309/2246957518_bef606d8ea.jpg?v=0
Pink = Wards that Clinton won White = Wards that Obama won by 50-80% Gray = Wards that Obama won by more than 80%
― jaymc, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 17:28 (seventeen years ago)
Eric I hope I miss that sale b/c however cheap, I have already blown my clothing budget for the month (cool Steve Madden shoes, Express coupon for $30 off $100 purchase (awesome pants, nice shirt) and now the boots). Zappos makes shopping way too easy!
interesting map!
― Jesse, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 17:31 (seventeen years ago)
what is up with the 10th ward, is it basically just indiana?
― n/a, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 17:33 (seventeen years ago)
i'm in that narrow strip of the 32nd ward so i don't have the same alderman as any of my friends in the neighborhood. i remember last spring when i was at inner town they had a petition going around to try to stay open because a neighbor bought a condo next door and was trying to get them shut down. i couldn't sign despite living two blocks away.
― chicago kevin, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 17:38 (seventeen years ago)
i love how o'hare has representation. in case anyone is thinking about taking up residence at the wolfgang puck's in terminal b you will be voting in the 41st ward.
― chicago kevin, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 17:39 (seventeen years ago)
I bought an awesome pair of shoes at Giraudon on Milwaukee over the weekend. 70% off for their going out of business sale.

The map shows what's happening nationally: Clinton is winning support among Hispanics (Pilsen = 25th ward, Little Village = 22nd) and older and working-class whites (Bridgeport = 11th, Jefferson Park = 45th); Obama is winning support among blacks (pretty much all the gray on the map consists of majority-black neighborhoods) and young college-educated whites (Lincoln Park = 43rd, Wicker Park = 1st, etc.).

Where will you stay Jon?
― Jesse, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 18:46 (seventeen years ago)
I bought yet another pair of shoes last night as well. I was trying on trousers, and realized that of all my damn shoes, I don't have a single presentable pair of brown ones.

(the brown oxfords were $30 on amazon, btw. And since the last pair of Kenneth Cole shoes I bought on Amazon in that size fit like a glove, I am hoping that these will, too.)

― Jesse, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 18:53 (seventeen years ago)
Oh no! I wd not ever want to be stuck at the office!!
I've tried and tried to work out the brown shoe problem but for me there are SO many shades and values of brown that one pair never goes with all my wardrobe items in the brown/russet/autumn family. I gave up and have replaced brown shoes with either metallic ones (like a distressed bronze color) or I just wear brown clothes with colored shoes in red, yellow, whatever.
I do like those boots, Jesse.
― Laurel, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 18:54 (seventeen years ago)
Very much agreed, those boots are the snazz.
