I find that given the lousy dialogue/plot in even top B'way musicals, more music is best.

There was an interesting (if too wide-ranging) program on PBS last night about music in theatre/film. Sondheim's discussion of "Send in the Clowns" made me appreciate that song more, or at least the original Glynis Johns version of it.

I saw Van Morrison do it live once, and he made the finish "Don't bother, they're here, motherfuckers."

It's a great song, but of course it's not beyond ruining. Sinatra = yes. Streisand = no no no.

Something about the way Sinatra sings, "Isn't it rrrrrrich?" with just a little extra bitter punctuation is really perfect.

I also really love the rest of the score of A Little Night Music, so it's disappointing that that one song is the only one that became well-known outside of the show (though tbh, I'm not sure how most would even make sense outside of the show).

I don't understand what it is about Streisand that attracts gay men. I get Liza, Madonna, etc. But was Streisand a really dramatic figure in some way?

I don't mind EARLY Streisand so much. She was unusual in 1962-70 for having "ethnic" looks for a pop star.

Anyway, like I was saying, I don't much care for her version of Send in the Clowns. Judy Collins gets the sad part across, and has a wilting blossom quality; Frank does my favorite version, sounding kinda pissed off but too sad and tired to do anything about it; and Barbra sounds merely professional. It's not a BAD version of the song, it just seems that she didn't bring anything to it besides Barbra-ness. At which I shrug.

I used to have a pair of Khombu boots. They made the first "shoe boots" that were all the rage on the playground in 6th grade.

The fake comments on those are really kind of funny. Why would you buy an insulated boot to go hiking in Costa Rica?

what is up with the 10th ward, is it basically just indiana?

i'm in that narrow strip of the 32nd ward so i don't have the same alderman as any of my friends in the neighborhood. i remember last spring when i was at inner town they had a petition going around to try to stay open because a neighbor bought a condo next door and was trying to get them shut down. i couldn't sign despite living two blocks away.

i love how o'hare has representation. in case anyone is thinking about taking up residence at the wolfgang puck's in terminal b you will be voting in the 41st ward.

The map shows what's happening nationally: Clinton is winning support among Hispanics (Pilsen = 25th ward, Little Village = 22nd) and older and working-class whites (Bridgeport = 11th, Jefferson Park = 45th); Obama is winning support among blacks (pretty much all the gray on the map consists of majority-black neighborhoods) and young college-educated whites (Lincoln Park = 43rd, Wicker Park = 1st, etc.).

I've tried and tried to work out the brown shoe problem but for me there are SO many shades and values of brown that one pair never goes with all my wardrobe items in the brown/russet/autumn family. I gave up and have replaced brown shoes with either metallic ones (like a distressed bronze color) or I just wear brown clothes with colored shoes in red, yellow, whatever.
