Debra Winger!

The voice of E.T. and former "Wonder Woman" star has never gotten her props, in part because she never allowed herself to develop a career. Still, for a while in the eighties she and Jessica Lange were the two most unpredictable actors of their era.

My picks: Terms of Endearment or Black Widow.

Wow she was in a lot of movies, I don't like.

Oh yeah.

I've seen only 6 (counting her stunt cameo in Made in Heaven; and I missed Urban Cowboy). She's best in Terms of Endearment and Black Widow, of those.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 4 January 2008 14:15 (seventeen years ago)

she's really fine in The Sheltering Sky doing a Judy Davis imitation.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 4 January 2008 14:15 (seventeen years ago)

Shadowlands

Rosanna Arquette made a documentary called Searching For Debra Winger which basically about famous actress claiming they can't get good roles. As much as I'm sure they've all dealt with some shit, I dunno if I need 90 minutes of women who HAVE gotten million dollar paychecks complaining about the industry. I believe Arquette found her doing regional theatre or something, possibly with Rosanna Arquette.

da croupier, Thursday, 10 January 2008 01:39 (seventeen years ago)

the problem with hollywood isn't that rosanna arquette hasn't gotten better roles, but that the male version of rosanna arquette has. though its possible aidan quinn would beg to differ.

have you read Kael's Mike's Murder review? I rented it about 12 years ago on her recommendation (said she was Antonioni-worthy or something). I remember it as pretty good overall but underwritten: she's thrust into the plot too quickly, without motivation.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 10 January 2008 01:44 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah the review is what got me to rent it. I didn't find it underwritten, thought Winger sold it.

da croupier, Thursday, 10 January 2008 01:46 (seventeen years ago)

You know who might have made it seem underwritten? Rosanna Arquette.

I love how Winger's imdb page is topped with pictures of her canoodling with Arliss Howard. No way to run a career.

da croupier, Thursday, 10 January 2008 01:48 (seventeen years ago)

Her exchanges with uber-creepy Paul Winfield were great.

speaking of creepy: Arliss Howard sported some rank mullets.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 10 January 2008 01:49 (seventeen years ago)

Arliss Howard's scenes in the Danny Aiello vehicle Ruby are outstanding, but its really not worth the effort to find it.

da croupier, Thursday, 10 January 2008 01:51 (seventeen years ago)

Kael's also very high on Everybody's Fine, but it's written by, um, Arthur Miller.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 10 January 2008 01:52 (seventeen years ago)

* Everybody Wins, of course.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 10 January 2008 01:52 (seventeen years ago)

Scott Seward loves that movie (brought it up on some thread where Tough Guys Don't Dance was being discussed), I've been meaning to try and find it.

Evidently Winger is in a new Jonathan Demme comedy! Man that would have been promising twenty years ago.

five years pass...

Finally saw Mike's Murder, which was worth a look for the gay/bi/drug demimonde, but I found Winger's role kinda thankless. Paul Winfield steals their scene together in his caftan. Also the guy who plays Mike's sleazy co-dealer is kinda terrible.

You know the original (unseen) James Bridges cut unfolded in reverse chronology?
