Yes, although I am an indie rock rich kid so I used different phrasing
― A B C, Friday, 4 January 2008 03:15 (seventeen years ago) link
what phrasing did you use?
― Surmounter, Friday, 4 January 2008 03:16 (seventeen years ago) link
I just kept it on the DL
― A B C, Friday, 4 January 2008 03:17 (seventeen years ago) link
Okay, my sister got a tattoo on the top of her foot with my parent's money while she was in college. She then spent, like, 3 years trying to hide it from them, while my brother tried to expose it.
I never wanted for money, but I would never have tried to pull that kind of shit.
― Sara R-C, Friday, 4 January 2008 03:17 (seventeen years ago) link
sisters will be sisters i s'pose
― Surmounter, Friday, 4 January 2008 03:19 (seventeen years ago) link

No, but I do have a business AmEx. I don't think I've ever used it outside of Home Depot or Lowe's.
― milo z, Friday, 4 January 2008 03:28 (seventeen years ago) link

Purchases made with Daddy's credit card in my life, pretty much all freshman year of college: School books One bus ticket home from Boston after I lost my wallet Mexican delivery one time Jah Division ticket
I think these are ranked in order of increasing loathsomeness and decreasing price
― A B C, Friday, 4 January 2008 03:34 (seventeen years ago) link
oh that's not bad.
― Surmounter, Friday, 4 January 2008 03:35 (seventeen years ago) link

― Surmounter, Friday, 4 January 2008 03:37 (seventeen years ago) link

― rrrobyn, Friday, 4 January 2008 03:39 (seventeen years ago) link
never used dad's cc for anything (don't think he has one) but he does help with half my rent on a monthly basis "until you're done with school and a have a real job."

my GF when i was 21 had this kind of set up for the first few months of our relationship.
― gr8080, Friday, 4 January 2008 03:55 (seventeen years ago) link
it was the best.
also i had a platonic female friend who took me out for a day of shopping/ spa treatments and lunch on daddy's cc one time.
― gr8080, Friday, 4 January 2008 03:56 (seventeen years ago) link
that's nice!
― Surmounter, Friday, 4 January 2008 03:58 (seventeen years ago) link
wow. that's never happened to me...
― Surmounter, Friday, 4 January 2008 03:59 (seventeen years ago) link
i've had the drinks thing, when the platonic female friends buy you drinks on daddy. i mean, not that i've ever had a nonplatonic female friend, really.
My dad bought me a secondhand fridge once, and a bed...thats about all.
― Trayce, Friday, 4 January 2008 04:01 (seventeen years ago) link
parents never had credit cards
― gershy, Friday, 4 January 2008 04:02 (seventeen years ago) link
my parent's sears cc hasn't been let out for so much as a breath of fresh air much less to give it to me since the late 70's. they may have gotten one since just so they can check into hotels or something.
― tremendoid, Friday, 4 January 2008 04:04 (seventeen years ago) link
i'm really glad for this btw, i grew up not only with the requisite young person's ignorance of credit but ignorance of the basics of even using credit which kept me out of trouble long enough for me to get my head on straight.
― tremendoid, Friday, 4 January 2008 04:12 (seventeen years ago) link
fucked that sentence up pretty bad, you get it
― tremendoid, Friday, 4 January 2008 04:13 (seventeen years ago) link
i used to take this girl home from school like once a week and my payment was lunch from daddy's cc.
― J0rdan S., Friday, 4 January 2008 04:14 (seventeen years ago) link

used it for booking flights/hotels, always have to pay him back. he paid my fees one year out of four at college, but if i needed it i coulda hit him for more. maybe when i'm putting a downpayment on a house or something.
― darraghmac, Friday, 4 January 2008 10:41 (seventeen years ago) link
I used to have my dad's cc number written down for booking cinema seats when I was really young. They had this machine that you just stuck the credit card in to pick up the ticket. No pin or signiature or anything.
― I know, right?, Friday, 4 January 2008 10:57 (seventeen years ago) link
when I was 17 my dad went to bolivia for a month and gave me his CC to order food online from the supermarket. I bought much booze.
― Upt0eleven, Friday, 4 January 2008 11:01 (seventeen years ago) link
i had this friend who would like take us all out on her dad's CC, but then she'd expect US to like pay for stuff for HER, even though she was never really paying for any of this!! it was infuriating.
― Surmounter, Friday, 4 January 2008 15:09 (seventeen years ago) link
Did you take her dad out?
― Kerm, Friday, 4 January 2008 15:12 (seventeen years ago) link
that's what i'm sayin!
― Surmounter, Friday, 4 January 2008 15:16 (seventeen years ago) link
Yeah, but maybe she wanted more stuff and there was a limit to what she could get away with cc'in'

this is the one that quickly got married and pregs. she likes the whole american way for women, you know. daddy, hubby, baby + a charge card. i'm so awful.

she likes the whole american way for women, you know. daddy, hubby, baby + a charge card. i'm so awful.
I think you're just calling it like you see it...a whole lot of women aspire to nothing else. To each their own, I guess.
My folks never gave me their credit card, per se, but I was always able to get them to reimburse me for school books and clothing. Never social spending or cars or anything like that. My dad did it right, I think - when we were 16, my brothers and I each got jobs in order to earn money to do things we wanted to do. If we didn't, we couldn't go out.
Now, if I could just make some headway with MY credit card debt (law school + wedding = playing from behind for the past few years...not that I've been hurting, but damn I would like to start saving some cash).
― B.L.A.M., Friday, 4 January 2008 15:36 (seventeen years ago) link
seriously, saving is looming for me too. i've never saved money, like at all... ;|
― Surmounter, Friday, 4 January 2008 15:39 (seventeen years ago) link
I've just never been in a position to do so. I've certainly never starved, but I could totally lessen my social schedule a little and find an extra few hundred each month to squirrell away. I mean, cripes...I'm married and over 30 - there's no need for me to go out as often as I do.
― B.L.A.M., Friday, 4 January 2008 17:46 (seventeen years ago) link
opening exchange on this thread is still one of my favorites
― Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 3 July 2008 19:31 (sixteen years ago) link
Yeah. Def.
But alas this can't be done here: under 18 you're not allowed to have a CC. And I think if you are of legal age, you have to have a job. I think. Mighht have changed though. Then again noone checks the name or whatever thze fuck on your card, so you can use someone else's card (if you know the pin of course).

We had this friend in college who had his parents' credit card. He would pick up the tab of a whole meal for all of us, but get us to pay our share with cash. Some of my friends thought this dude was an asshole.
It's funny thinking about it now since today, we all would have had credit or debit cards. Maybe not our parents' card, but who pays with cash anymore?
― Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 3 July 2008 21:49 (sixteen years ago) link
i wish i did. it really grosses me out thinking about the amount of money these companies are raking in for every stupid transaction i make w/ my visa
― deej, Thursday, 3 July 2008 21:50 (sixteen years ago) link
yeah it's like a holiday when i have cash. i usually pay w/ debit tho
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 3 July 2008 21:52 (sixteen years ago) link
Haha the only people I've known ever do this were too-old-to-be-doing-this indie kids working in music PR for £14k, and they used it for about two weeks in every month.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 3 July 2008 21:52 (sixteen years ago) link
i pay str8 cash, sometimes checks
fuck a credit card
debit yeah
― deeznuts, Thursday, 3 July 2008 21:53 (sixteen years ago) link
Our checking account gives us 5.01% interest if we make at least ten debit transactions a month. If we make nine or fewer, the APY drops down to 1%.
I like cash too, but it's lot easier to look at Quicken for budgeting later when you use debit or credit.
― Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 3 July 2008 21:59 (sixteen years ago) link
My car went on my mum's debit card. My parents' bank was pushing cheap loans at them, I needed a car, so they borrowed the money for me.
Since I got a credit card I've put nearly everything I buy on it, because it is, in a sense, a tiny amount of free money. I pay the account in full every month, and I could just as easily buy on my debit card; but if I put it on the credit card instead, there's a few extra fractional pennies coming my way in interest on my current account.
