IT'S NAUSEATED NOT NAUSEOUS FOR FUCK'S SAKE

quincie, Friday, 4 January 2008 20:54 (seventeen years ago)

sorry, that was a bit strident.

quincie, Friday, 4 January 2008 20:54 (seventeen years ago)

when i had an ulcer, i would get sharp stomach pains when i didn't eat for a few hours.

Jordan, Friday, 4 January 2008 20:55 (seventeen years ago)

Main Entry: nau·seous
Pronunciation: \ˈnȯ-shəs, ˈnȯ-zē-əs\

IT'S NAUSEATED NOT NAUSEOUS FOR FUCK'S SAKE

POWNED BY WEBSTERS

— nau·seous·ness noun
Main Entry: nau·seous
Pronunciation: \ˈnȯ-shəs, ˈnȯ-zē-əs\
Function: adjective
Date: 1612
1 : causing nausea or disgust : nauseating
2 : affected with nausea or disgust
— nau·seous·ly adverb
— nau·seous·ness noun
usage Those who insist that nauseous can properly be used only in sense 1 and that in sense 2 it is an error for nauseated are mistaken. Current evidence shows these facts: nauseous is most frequently used to mean physically affected with nausea, usually after a linking verb such as feel or become; figurative use is quite a bit less frequent. Use of nauseous in sense 1 is much more often figurative than literal, and this use appears to be losing ground to nauseating. Nauseated is used more widely than nauseous in sense 2.

Mr. Que, Friday, 4 January 2008 20:57 (seventeen years ago)

wow i screwed that up

Mr. Que, Friday, 4 January 2008 20:58 (seventeen years ago)

In bell's defense, there are times when eating makes me feel nauseated AND (kind of as a result) nauseous.

lately, i feel all vommy when trying to eat steamed greens (spinach, collard greens, etc.), which is strange b/c i LOVE them. i blame the new medicine i'm taking. obv, i have no clue if the two are related, but that's the story i'm sticking with.

What, correcting your S.O.'s grammar in public? No, you did that fine.

Rock Hardy, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:00 (seventeen years ago)

xpost - wait, I have that same issue with steamed greens lately! I keep wondering if it's some kind of seasonal crappy-greens thing I've never noticed before -- I keep getting spinach or chard and finding them just nasty.

nabisco, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:01 (seventeen years ago)

Oh c'mon, you're a lady so stomach issues must mean you're pregnant, right?! ;-)

Seriously though that sucks. Feeling nauseous/nauseated is one of the worst feelings ever.

ENBB, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:02 (seventeen years ago)

do you get heartburn a lot?

69, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:04 (seventeen years ago)

If this has been 2-3 days or more, DOCTOR

Dr Morbius, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:05 (seventeen years ago)

Sometimes ya just gotta be prescriptive.

Laurel, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:05 (seventeen years ago)

This is reflux. See a doctor.

HI DERE, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:05 (seventeen years ago)

when there is a doubt about which usage may or may not be faultless, go conservative.

that's all I'm sayin'

quincie, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:05 (seventeen years ago)

xpost - weird! the spinach i steamed was supposedly fresh (from godknowswhere), and the greens were on new year's day, when having hoppin' johns and collard greens (complete with hog jowl bits) and i couldn't even finish them, probably much to the dismay of the person who served them to me. maybe it is seasonal! i don't remember having this problem before, though.

molly mummenschanz, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:06 (seventeen years ago)

do you still have an appendix?

69, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:06 (seventeen years ago)

also: are you taking any vitamins or new meds? that may factor in there. . .

quincie, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:06 (seventeen years ago)

nauseous is most frequently used to mean physically affected with nausea

but frequency doesn't mean that it's right! this is one of those usage issues that bugs me all out of proportion (see also: "impact on").

lauren, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:07 (seventeen years ago)

yes! so true!

quincie, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:08 (seventeen years ago)

it's been since wednesday. i will go to the doctor soon!

horseshoe, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:09 (seventeen years ago)

anyway, ulcers don't cause nausea in my experience. it's more of a sharp pain as jordan said, plus a heartburn/bloated feeling.

but i feel bad getting in to this argument again on this thread

hope u feel better bell!

jhøshea, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:10 (seventeen years ago)

In the meantime (doctor-wise) I would suggest eating lots of bananas / yogurt / fiber for a while, all of which kinda give your digestive system rest and healing time

(oh, also, greenswise: I think people/places have a tendency in winter to serve them absolutely limp and drowning in butter, which is often a lot more gross-making than something a bit drier and crisper)

nabisco, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:10 (seventeen years ago)

also yes i hope you feel better bell labs

Mr. Que, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:11 (seventeen years ago)

thanks guys. also sorry for offending the grammar contingent :(

bell_labs, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:12 (seventeen years ago)

i have a lifetime supply of prevacid from my dr if you end up needing something like that, btw.

lauren, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:14 (seventeen years ago)

Worst game show ever

nabisco, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:15 (seventeen years ago)

heartburn sucks.

Surmounter, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:15 (seventeen years ago)

bell, I've been similarly afflicted this week. I blamed it on too much fat/fried stuff, thinking gall bladder trouble. Oatmeal for breakfast today, plain toast and tea and boiled chicken for lunch, a pear. Still queasy, but nothing like the past few days. Good luck getting it sorted - feel better soon.

Jaq, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:19 (seventeen years ago)

bell, maybe you could try the ladies' yogurt, activia or some shit. isn't that stuff supposed to sort out a lady's digestive system? also, yes! feel better!

molly mummenschanz, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:21 (seventeen years ago)

t/s: "lady yogurt" versus "man yogurt"

nabisco, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:23 (seventeen years ago)

i used to get nauseous (headaches, stomach ache, barfiness, total fatigue) whenever i ate when i was in my mid-20s and it basically came down to 'bodies change' :/ - so i did all this research into nutrition and talked to doctor/nurses and it ended up coming down to diet modification for me, starting with cutting out sugar cold-turkey and cutting back on carbs in general and watching fat intake (tho it was never that high to begin with) but all not to an extreme extent. ate more salad (tho not spinach - spinach makes me feel weird too - hm = i have read it's a histamine-related thing). nausea after eating went away within a week or two. sort of still eat like that but not in a militant way. tho proper breakfast hasn't appealed to me (to point of ugh nausea) in about 5 months for reasons unknown. i don't know, bodies do change, it's true.

xpost
don't eat yogurt with sugar in it

gabbneb, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:26 (seventeen years ago)

mangurt

gabbneb, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:26 (seventeen years ago)

i might try getting digestive enzymes from the health food store. which should do the same stuff as yogurts. and oatmeal is the only thing so far that hasn't made me feel disgusting. prevacid is otc right?

bell_labs, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:28 (seventeen years ago)

prevacid is by prescription, as far as i know.

lauren, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:35 (seventeen years ago)

this has been my life since the age of twelve. the only way to forestall tummy pain is to eat small itty bites of food approximately 390255531 times per day.

remy bean, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:35 (seventeen years ago)

xpost - Won't hurt, but the digestive enzymes are a little more for the intestines, whereas post-eating nausea is more coming from the stomach part of the process, no? I was suggesting bananas/yogurt/fiber (and yeah, oatmeal too) mostly because they're like zero work, so your whole digestive system gets to kick back and repair itself, or at least not mess with you until you can see a doc.

rrrobyn with the funnies

nabisco, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:39 (seventeen years ago)

ugh remy that sounds terrible :(
i'll put bananas on my shopping list.

bell_labs, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:42 (seventeen years ago)

I had some issues a while back where the options were narrowing toward, umm, lie in a hospital on an IV, eating nothing, for a couple days, or kinda fake the same thing at home with ba/yo/rice/fiber/etc. -- four banana-filled days later, all good. Sorry, I'm a crazy banana pitchman now.

Hopefully you'll start feeling better over the weekend, and not have to see a doctor for it!

nabisco, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:46 (seventeen years ago)

fiber can make things worse, though, too. trying to figure out stomach/gi stuff is really tricky.

lauren, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:46 (seventeen years ago)

yep
ugh

rrrobyn, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:48 (seventeen years ago)

there are some docs that will tell you the opposite advice of what nabisco's just said :/

rrrobyn, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:48 (seventeen years ago)

What does it mean when you get debilitating back pain the day after you drink alcohol?

HI DERE, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:49 (seventeen years ago)

it means your kidneys are busted?

remy bean, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:51 (seventeen years ago)

i will post more to this thread when i am not at work. i feel like i might have a lock on terrible undiagnosed and painful g.i. issues, excepting possibly curtis and his crohns (/jaymc).

remy bean, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:53 (seventeen years ago)

Here is where doctors and I agree: you should listen to doctors, and not my random hard-on for bananas

nabisco, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:56 (seventeen years ago)

get well soon bell_labs

Lingbert, Friday, 4 January 2008 21:59 (seventeen years ago)

yes, srsly, i hope you figure it out, l!

i wld listen to both doctors and bananas

rrrobyn, Friday, 4 January 2008 22:07 (seventeen years ago)

i posted this on another thread somewhere re: gastro issues - it may or may not work for you but it made me feel better this summer when hit by heat waves and certain food sensitivities - site is cheesy btw but hey - http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/

HI DERE, Friday, 4 January 2008 22:14 (seventeen years ago)

Dude, in the story of my digestive crises, the part where I fall in love with bananas is, sadly, by FAR the least gross chapter
