The waaaaaay simplified version: A caucus is when a bunch of members of a political party get together to decide which primary candidate within that party to support. The candidate with the support of the most caucuses wins that state's electorate. Usually this goes by sheer numbers, but there's some wheeling and dealing involved, too. Some states directly vote on primary candidates rather than choosing by caucus.
