Kidding on that one but this should be a platform for non-Merkins to ask questions that might be considered stupid on the other one but here will be deemed to be merely a request for received wisdom.

american-style elections are rather baffling to me. i'm attempting to educate myself so as not to cause myself future embarrassment, and also maybe one day i will be a voting american!!

The waaaaaay simplified version: A caucus is when a bunch of members of a political party get together to decide which primary candidate within that party to support. The candidate with the support of the most caucuses wins that state's electorate. Usually this goes by sheer numbers, but there's some wheeling and dealing involved, too. Some states directly vote on primary candidates rather than choosing by caucus.
