The strike strikes.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 13:44 (eighteen years ago)

The head of publicity at one major studio said he would not risk humiliating his actors -- not to mention spending tens of thousands of dollars on travel and stylists -- by bringing them to some unglamorous meeting room to find out they had lost.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 13:44 (eighteen years ago)

boo hoo.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 14:10 (eighteen years ago)

the Oscars should be a conference call.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 14:11 (eighteen years ago)

it should be a chat room.

s1ocki, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 14:59 (eighteen years ago)

have they ever been cancelled before?

Surmounter, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 15:21 (eighteen years ago)

Until sometime sfter the Pia Zadora scandal, no one would've noticed. It was a better world.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 15:23 (eighteen years ago)

Oscars to finish on time this year.

SeekAltRoute, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 21:33 (eighteen years ago)

Live funnies:

6:07 p.m. At some point or another, nearly every philosophy student with an interest in entertainment has pondered, "What if they gave out awards in Hollywood and no one showed up to accept them?" Until now, there's always been at least one or two celebrities willing to show up to either moderate or accept every kind of award Hollywood could come up with. Except for tonight. This is being carried live on several networks and there is not a single movie star in sight. For those out there who hate awards shows, this could be the ultimate achievement of their dreams.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 14 January 2008 02:21 (eighteen years ago)

eesh, atonement. (ok no i haven't seen it. but i can't imagine why i would.)

tipsy mothra, Monday, 14 January 2008 02:45 (eighteen years ago)

sweeney todd > juno shockah.

every year around dec. 1st I like to predict best pic and Atonement seemed like the safe bet. meh film as it turns out (predictably) but No Country and TWBB seem to split the dark-side-of-america vote.

Simon H., Monday, 14 January 2008 02:55 (eighteen years ago)

omigod these tools discussing Away From Her is the funniest shit I've heard this year.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 14 January 2008 02:56 (eighteen years ago)

Also from that link I provided:

For those craving awkward banter and a much slower pace, check out NBC's coverage, in which Billy Bush and Nancy O'Dell chat about the winners, show lots of clips and throw to insta-analysis by Entertainment Weekly's Dave Karger. It's also fun to witness Bush bumping up against the limits of his film knowledge: "Burton and Depp. It's like Scorsese and DiCaprio!" Let's hope Robert DeNiro decided not to watch TV tonight.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 14 January 2008 02:58 (eighteen years ago)

Booooring.

Eric H., Monday, 14 January 2008 03:05 (eighteen years ago)

this shit was dumb

J0rdan S., Monday, 14 January 2008 03:05 (eighteen years ago)

I don't expect either Atonement or Sweeney Todd to actually be nominated for Best Picture. Is that a first? for neither GG BP winner to get nominated?

Eric H., Monday, 14 January 2008 03:05 (eighteen years ago)

the Schnabel win is the only surprising one.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 14 January 2008 03:07 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, I suspect Atonement will get a nod. I too would be v. surprised if Sweeney did too, unless it beating Juno is a sign of things to come. (I doubt it.)

Simon H., Monday, 14 January 2008 03:08 (eighteen years ago)

Meanwhile, holy mother of God, The Bucket List was #1 at the box-office this weekend?

Eric H., Monday, 14 January 2008 03:09 (eighteen years ago)

There's the other thread for this, but I predict BP will be:

Into the Wild
Juno
Michael Clayton
No Country for Old Men
There Will Be Blood

I could maybe see the Schnabel movie slipping in in place of ... Michael Clayton?

Eric H., Monday, 14 January 2008 03:09 (eighteen years ago)

Totally agree with that list. MC's the only film starring a superstar in contention, so I doubt it'll get overlooked.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 14 January 2008 03:14 (eighteen years ago)

Which is of course what The Film Experience is also prediction.

Eric H., Monday, 14 January 2008 03:17 (eighteen years ago)

I think Atonement is more likely to get a nod than (the infinitely superior) Into the Wild. Maybe that's just because my fave usually gets overlooked...

Simon H., Monday, 14 January 2008 03:22 (eighteen years ago)

My fave this year (of the Oscar-possible titles) is No Country, so it's similarly bizarre to me that it's a frontrunner.

Eric H., Monday, 14 January 2008 03:24 (eighteen years ago)

What I love about all this is how much the writers strike has the rest of Hollywood's balls in a vice. It is awesome.

Trayce, Monday, 14 January 2008 03:33 (eighteen years ago)

I predict the following best picture nominees.

No Country for Old Men
There Will Be Blood
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Sweeney Todd
Juno

No Country for Old Men will win.

Juno should be replaced by Michael Clayton, but such is life.

Mr. Goodman, Monday, 14 January 2008 03:49 (eighteen years ago)

I'm gonna go with Eric H's list, save for the aforementioned subbing of Wild for Atonement.

Simon H., Monday, 14 January 2008 03:53 (eighteen years ago)

Best Actor in a TV Musical or Comedy: David Duchovny in Californication

WAU

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Monday, 14 January 2008 04:08 (eighteen years ago)

Extras won best musical/comedy tv series, the HFPA really do have a hard on for Ricky Gervais.

Billy Dods, Monday, 14 January 2008 11:24 (eighteen years ago)

they should do this every year till people STOP GIVING A FUCK ABOUT SHITTY AWARDS.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Monday, 14 January 2008 11:32 (eighteen years ago)

what kind of douchebag watches films or appraises them based on whether or not they won an award? fuck 'em.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Monday, 14 January 2008 11:33 (eighteen years ago)

Hey, serious question, but does anyone (actors included) give a fuck about the Golden Globes? Like, if the stars boycott the Oscars that's a big deal, but not so with these?

S-, Monday, 14 January 2008 11:47 (eighteen years ago)

what kind of douchebag watches films or appraises them based on whether or not they won an award? fuck 'em.

I know I've explained it before, but it's basically the film geek equivalent of sports playoffs.

That said, the world of films would definitely be better if people didn't talk about them (films, I mean).

Eric H., Monday, 14 January 2008 13:45 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, and check the grosses of most movies that get nominated for these awards. It appears that actually most people don't give a fuck about the shitty awards.

Eric H., Monday, 14 January 2008 13:49 (eighteen years ago)

i don't even know what "playoffs" are. i think the awards give a bump to fox searchlight pictures -- maybe more in england than in the US cos the oscarbait only arrives here in the run-up to the oscars, ie not in november-december.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Monday, 14 January 2008 13:52 (eighteen years ago)

I concur w/ the Eric/FilmExp/Alfred Oscar list, but certainly Diving Bell could sneak in there.

I read in the NYT that the paparazzi at the GGs were so celeb-starved they nearly knocked over Mary Hart. Desperation defined.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 14 January 2008 14:05 (eighteen years ago)

i don't even know what "playoffs" are

Not even an educated guess?
