I need a new job interview suit. Where's good to go? Cheap to midrange prices I guess.

How much time to you have to shop?

Got till saturday so I figure I could get alterations turned round by then if I bought today or tomorrow, if not I can take it to the guy in London who shortens all my trousers.

Century 21, then. Do you know it already? It's a madhouse but going in the morning will keep the crowds down.

If not there, I guess people DO buy suits from H&M, I just never have.

Laurel, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

I think only skinny people buy suits at H&M, or at least skinnier than me.

Brooks Brothers' big sale is on now, tho I'm not sure precisely what the suit sale is like. There's one next door to Century 21 downtown. Syms, a few blocks further down, is better than Century 21 for both suit selection and service.

rothman's at union sq is good, too, although syms is probably cheaper.

but if you want to support a local business...

I'm slightly afraid a Brooks Brothers' sale will be like the Marc Jacobs flats in the Cent 21 shoe dept: marked down from $500 to $300. Oh yes, great, that puts them RIGHT in my price range.

a lot of stuff at c21 is like that, i find. v annoying.

lauren, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 18:20 (eighteen years ago)

Is it? I feel like it used to be normal to find better deals, maybe it got too "discovered".

Laurel, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 18:27 (eighteen years ago)

yes and no. i got a balenciaga top there for ~$50 once, but a lot of the big name stuff is prohibitively expensive even after a mark-down.

lauren, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 18:29 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I have the occasional insane bargain for like 1/5 of the orig price, but I guess you have to check often for that.

Laurel, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 18:30 (eighteen years ago)

last suit I got was at Century 21 but yeah it takes a lot of time to pick through the racks

a friend had recommended Syms so I went there first but I couldn't find anything I liked

I'm lucky that my work is only a couple blocks from C21 so I can just duck in every now and then. a lotta times I get nothing, other times there's lots of good stuff. I think it's better / easier to deal with for men's than for women's (my wife hates it)

I needed a suit recently, I had, um, outrgrown the last one. I never had any luck the times I went to Century 21. I always used to go to Macy's but this time they sucked. Then I went to bloomingdales and the service was great, the suits were great and I am very happy with it. Of course I had some help paying for it, it was not cheap. But I needed a nice suit.

I kinda wanted to find something cheap at Banana Republic, I like what they have but the stores near me never had my sizes or really that much in stock. Since getting the suit I found the location in Chelsea on 8th ave and like 16th I think, and upstairs it has TONS and TONS of menswear. That may be a sensible place to get a cheapish suit.
