"It is what it is."

This fucking phrase! I hear it everywhere now. I guess it's a few years old, but it's definitely reached an annoying level of saturation in the last few months. People seem to use it for everything, from exonerating themselves of all responsibility for anything to just a general placeholder when they can't think of anything meaningful to say, like a really pretentious version of "uh....."

I hate it, and I hate it, and I hate it, and I hate it even more when I find myself saying it.

Oilyrags, Sunday, 13 January 2008 01:09 (eighteen years ago)

it is not in the same universe of awful as "it's all good".

it's definitely more than a few years old. actually, i can never hate this phrase because i've never heard anybody use it and because it is the name of one of my favorite derrick may songs.

This seems like a more polite way of saying, "Quite your bitching. It ain't going to change nothin'."

Or a stupider way of saying, "Musn't grumble, dear."

Or a more opaque way of saying, "Dang, will you look at that, will you?"

Or a more circular way of saying, "It is."

As Mr May said: I begun to understand that I had a new thing going on. You can say that It Is What It Is forced dancemusic into a unknown area back in -88.
Together with Beyond the dance (on the b-side) he constructed his typically organic sound.
The track is meltdown of all of the the complex feelings of humanity.
The last 30 seconds of the track is frustating of life!
If you only can take one dancerecord with you to the stars, It Is What It Is will be the best choice. Enfore.

"It's a small world"

NO IT'S NOT. IT'S REALLY REALLY REALLY BIG. AIRBUS A380 IS A VERY BIG AEROPLANE AND GUESS WHAT, THE WORLD IS BIGGER THAN THAT THING. BUMPING INTO SOMEONE WHO LIVES IN YOUR STREET DOES NOT MEAN THE WORLD HAS SHRUNK SUDDENLY SO STOP. SAYING. IT.

"it's all good" is actually pretty useful and nuanced and one of those miracles of slang shorthand that makes me really happy. Dude.

J0hn D., Sunday, 13 January 2008 02:57 (eighteen years ago)

i prefer "right on."

J.D., Sunday, 13 January 2008 03:01 (eighteen years ago)

uttered initially by athletes on the losing side of a contest,

The thing is that it's perfect for situations like this where you want to acknowledge that something sucks but don't really have anything else to say about it. You can complain that it's meaningless but a lot of the time conversations need meaningless placeholders like that. Obviously it does get annoying though.

I would take "It is what it is" "It's all good" AND "It's a small world" if we could just get rid of fucking "I threw up a little in my mouth."

"It is what it is" is really useful for the way it's used in reality competition shows, when they hit the time limit and they have to hand in the crappy steak or the dress without the intended collar. Cutaway from frustrated shots at the scene of the action to interview with the contestant: "What're you gonna do? It is what it is." In this use, it's not exactly nonsense: it is (that is, it stands as, will be entered into the historical record as) what it is (...at this exact moment in time). Given more time, it would be what it would be. But it is what it is. I've done all I can do.

I am in architecture school right now, so we need these kinds of phrases.

I only hear “It is what it is” at work where it’s used consistently to describe bad decisions made by upper management.
It’s not as fate-driven as que sera sera. IT COULD BE SOMETHING ELSE (but we’ve decided to screw around some more and do "this").

I mean, I know it's irritating and all to hear people using phrases on the banned list against all the rules, but there are more important things in life to worry about, like whether the retarded woman at work's horse-laugh is 100db or 110db.

My Ph.D. advisor always used to say "It is what it is." It's actually a very useful phrase to have at hand in mathematics, where it unpacks to mean "Yes, I do know what this thing is, yes, if we had an extra hour to spend computing it, we could describe it more explicitly, so it's not a mystery or anything; or maybe we couldn't; but the point is that, while I need to mention this thing in order to proceed with my argument, we don't actually need to _know_ what it is, so let's just say "it is what it is" and get on with the main point."
