SeekAltRoute, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 09:28 (eighteen years ago)

I point you all towards this thread - KITTEN!!!!!!!! - for evidence.

Scik Mouthy, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 09:36 (eighteen years ago)

I love me a british shorthair. They're so stern :D

Trayce, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 09:43 (eighteen years ago)

THough the Turkish Van is up there for being the cat wot likes to swim.

Trayce, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 09:45 (eighteen years ago)

Russian blue and ragdoll tie for first place. Just completely totally awesome.

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 10:00 (eighteen years ago)

I used to work with a guy who looked like Russian blues.

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 10:00 (eighteen years ago)

moggy

my gf's cat is a russian blue. lovely, but i prefer my kitties with a less standoffish personality

electricsound, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 10:01 (eighteen years ago)

Domestic Shorthair.

nate woolls, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 10:03 (eighteen years ago)

Ragdoll's are the friendliest, most affectionate things ever.

Scik Mouthy, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 10:13 (eighteen years ago)

STOP. TEASING. ME.

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 10:31 (eighteen years ago)

Saying that, at 2am today I had to put his head under the tap to make him understand that he had to STOP ATTACKING THE STEREO IN THE BEDROOM RIGH FUCKING NOW

Scik Mouthy, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 10:34 (eighteen years ago)

Manx, for personality.

Lostandfound, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 10:42 (eighteen years ago)

You carried him to the sink and ran a tap on his head?

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 10:43 (eighteen years ago)

I did, aye.

Scik Mouthy, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 10:46 (eighteen years ago)

He just kind of shook his head a bit and then came to bed with us and purred a lot.

Scik Mouthy, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 10:46 (eighteen years ago)

stevie, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 10:47 (eighteen years ago)

That would be called a Domestic Longhair in the UK, I think.

nate woolls, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 10:55 (eighteen years ago)

thank you. vote CAST.

stevie, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 10:57 (eighteen years ago)

Jordan, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

I realized in the course of looking up breeds on wikipedia because of this thread that my 2 awesome cats (which were from a stray's litter so we never really knew the breed) are definitely at least part Maine Coon, so that's what I voted for.

Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 16:37 (eighteen years ago)

i've never had a cat whose breed i could identify.

Jordan, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 16:38 (eighteen years ago)

elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

Siamese cats are the stupidest of all cats, apparently, although how this is tested I don't know. And border collies are the stupidest dogs.

nate woolls, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 16:49 (eighteen years ago)

what elmo said. ALL KITTIES BEAUTIFUL. but maine coons are awesome because they often have extra toes. and ocicats are so cool.

bell_labs, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 16:49 (eighteen years ago)

that looks like one of my cats.

my mom was trying to get me to adopt this cat that she found the other night, i had to be all "no mom, it is not appropriate for a single dude to have three cats, there is no way."

Jordan, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

American Polydactyl

^i didn't notice this was an option. YAY POLYDACTYLS

bell_labs, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

border collies are fucking smart as hell, it's the afghans that are dumb

elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 16:51 (eighteen years ago)

bucky ^^^ has thumbs!

elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 16:52 (eighteen years ago)

siamese cats are so not the stupidest!

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 16:55 (eighteen years ago)

Seconding Elmo -- border collies are working dogs, they're freakin' geniuses!

Jordan, don't do it: I went on a date once with someone with three cats and I have to say it was distinctly off-putting. Also there was cat hair EVERYWHERE in his apt gross gross gross.

Laurel, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 16:55 (eighteen years ago)

there is already cat hair everywhere in my apartment

Jordan, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 16:55 (eighteen years ago)

my vote goes to maine coon though

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 16:56 (eighteen years ago)

Including ground into the upholstered furniture? He was like, "Oh, that's the cats' chair" and I was like "OBVIOUSLY".

Laurel, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 16:57 (eighteen years ago)

I mean, they can keep it.

Laurel, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 16:57 (eighteen years ago)

uh, yeah, basically. i mean i will lint roll the couch before company comes over but it's pretty much impossible to get everything.

Jordan, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

one of my cats is an infinite shedder.

Jordan, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 17:00 (eighteen years ago)

Jordan, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 17:03 (eighteen years ago)

One of my siamese kitties is pretty dumb, at least compared to the other cats I have had (mostly American shorthair). She's very needy too, in the sense that she requires human companionship and touch 80% of the time we are home. Siamese cats also have comparatively poor vision and hearing, and they used to be crosseyed often; one of my siamese is crosseyed (the snowshoe, not the applehead). Their markings are poor camouflage, so the combination of these factors -- supposedly all caused by the gene that makes their fur darker on cooler body-areas -- makes 'em poor hunters. There's a theory that the breed developed its attachment to humans as an evolutionary response to the fact that they can't hunt. I like the theory, but it's ultimately unprovable.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

CAT BREED! IT'S ALL I EVER HEARD.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 18:00 (eighteen years ago)

Where is the option for moggy? Blends are the best

Vicky, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 18:56 (eighteen years ago)

when i first picked biff up from out of his cage at the shelter, he fell into my arms like a baby, belly up, and put his paw on my face. that sealed the deal.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 20:38 (eighteen years ago)

my cat noam (rip awesomest cat) was def almost all maine coon and pretty hueg - mostly indoor cat the last several years but did go outside for a while there and was cool with it. totally made those brrrip brrrip noises! i have been missing him a lot today b/c of this thread. but that's okay.

Sphynx all the way

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 21:16 (eighteen years ago)

Is Biff declawed? He's got those little fluffy paw protrusions that declawed kitties have.

Abbott, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 21:19 (eighteen years ago)

biff looks like a bro

Jordan, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 21:20 (eighteen years ago)

Onion editorial I Think I'm Going About This Cat-Breeding Thing All Wrong.

As far as I can tell, I'm doing everything right. I wait until they're well in heat, rubbing up against me and yowling to be serviced. At that point, I bring them out back to the shed, where I've prepared a special breeding area.

Abbott, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 21:22 (eighteen years ago)

cats that have been declawed make me think so, so poorly of their owners who put them through that. fucking awful.

elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 21:23 (eighteen years ago)

<3 rrrobyn. Losing pets is the worst.

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 21:25 (eighteen years ago)

I've got a declawed cat (responsibility goes to his previous owner.) Even though I'd never do it, it is kinda fun to play high-five with him.

He also is very grabby and can open doors and carry bottle caps with his paws.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 21:27 (eighteen years ago)

nope, biff isn't declawed (i have the scars to prove it - he plays rough). he just has fluffy white little man feet. actually, he has freakishly long hair on the bottom of his paws which peeks out between the pads.

xpost = noam! giant fluffy adorableness! he looks like he was a totally aweseom dude!

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 21:28 (eighteen years ago)

I adopted a declawed cat and she was all Nancy-Drewed-out, what with the doorknob-turning and the door opening and the sneak craziness. But they BUNNY KICK like bonkers and you can't much let them outside.

She was a huggy lovey cat named MEPHISTOPHOLES and she looked like a solemn grey wizard. But she would sleep next to me head and PUT HER ARM AROUND MY NECK. Serious. And I sleep on my belly so I had my arm around her and it was TRUE LOVE.

Abbott, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 21:29 (eighteen years ago)

my friend took in a cat that showed up on his front porch. poor thing was declawed and super skinny. he named her "crabby lulu" b/c she was a total mess and not nice at all, but i really can't blame her. fighting for food during a buffalo winter w/o claws must be awful.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 21:34 (eighteen years ago)

omg abbott. yes. kitty cuddling is the best thing EVER.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 21:35 (eighteen years ago)

I can confirm that Biff is indeed a bro.

He has also been furious ever since Molly went out of town. He is usually reasonably cool, but the last four days have seen him anger-puking, skulking, screaming, and refusing to be petted.

The anger puke was the worst. He threw up IN MY SHOE.

Dickerson Pike, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 21:48 (eighteen years ago)

Man, kitties always throw up in shoes! It's kind of clever.

Abbott, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 21:48 (eighteen years ago)

But they BUNNY KICK like bonkers and you can't much let them outside.

Mine bunny kicks like a kangaroo. A fun activity is to put my arm through a leg of some denim jeans, and then attack his belly. Good times.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 21:48 (eighteen years ago)

My manx actually goes on walks with me and my dogs...just kinda runs ahead, waits, then runs ahead again. I vote manx.

My last Manx did that too. Abyssinians are perhaps the most beautiful of cats, but I'm now addicted to Manx cats for their distinct and oddly lovable personalities.

Lostandfound, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 21:54 (eighteen years ago)

Pike, if a cat threw up in my shoe, by the time Molly got home there'd be one less resident of the apartment.

Laurel, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 21:59 (eighteen years ago)

siamese go on walks and fetch and do all sorts of dog things. my friend had one that was friends w/a fox!

jhøshea, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 22:01 (eighteen years ago)

ban laurel

Jordan, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 22:01 (eighteen years ago)

maine coons are big and friendly and sweet and awesome. Some strays came around my mom's house so she fed them and now takes care of them, takes them to the vet, surgery when needed, etc. Sam is the big male, and Rosie is the smaller female, and play together and curl up together on the deck. Sam comes inside all the time and hangs with the humans but Rosie won't usually let them get close. Sam is pretty much the coolest cat I've ever met.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 22:02 (eighteen years ago)

the only thing abt siamese: so noisy. gah shut up cat jeez.

jhøshea, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 22:02 (eighteen years ago)

You sure those ain't actual raccoons, dan?

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 22:15 (eighteen years ago)

raccoons, in my experience, aren't nearly as friendly.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 22:22 (eighteen years ago)

They are when you're holding a loaf of bread and some Red #40 hot dogs.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 22:35 (eighteen years ago)

Onion cat breeding story - TOO FAR

milo z, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 23:32 (eighteen years ago)

oh kitty in box

my other cat is totally part siamese and pretty smart in some ways but also pretty dumb in other ways. he knows when i'm coming up the apartment building stairs and his meows are loud enough to be heard from bottom of long staircase (or maybe he just meows for everyone? ohgod.) it's really a bit more like screaming than meowing.

maine coons are the coolest laid-back dudes of the cat dudes for sure. i have a friend who cannot deal with cats at all and he could deal with noam.

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 01:47 (eighteen years ago)

Tombot that kitty is GORGEOUS but he seems embarrassed that you drink Fiji water.

Abbott, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 01:49 (eighteen years ago)

Siberian! because they are hypo-allergenic, and not ugly!
Oh, I am allergic to most animal hair.

our work is never over, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 04:41 (eighteen years ago)

I only get fiji for the sturdy bottles that I can refill lots before the plastic gets all wonky. dr ben is the best animal that ever lived. those are his three best tricks. the bottom one is his I'm Too Sexy trick, because he will roll one way and make his blue steel face and say "rao" then the opposite way, make a different face, say "rao," then roll flat on his back, do a third face at you, and say "rao" again. repeat until you rub his gut.
