This is the thread where we cut and paste ILX posts, but change the date stamp to a previous year - it'll be just like we're LIVING IN THE PAST
it's the time of year when relatively sane people try to second-guess the terrible taste of a bunch of reactionary old farts over a small sample of stilted, sackless, actory bollocks, woo-hoo.

So I have one irritatingly plebian habit, which is that I always announce to anyone present how little my last bargain cost. This is usually not liable to cause me maximum social embarrassment, but yesterday I realised the friend I was telling Bargain Tales to was too rich to be impressed or concerned by that sort of thing (but I had to convey that UNIQLO rocked SO HARD, so Londoners make haste to the jumpers section is all I'm saying). And I know I'm not alone. Which of your habits strikes you as too embarrassingly plebian for the aspirational world of today?

Yeah, well, I'm married to a curvy Colombian woman, so the flowers of indie rock womanhood look decidedly dingy and drab to me, and always have. The indie world's concept of sexy is very closely related to its concept of "rock": limp, non-threatening, far more interested in talking than fucking.

A bunch of artists and art students move into an area formerly inhabited only by poor people. After ten years the rents are tripled and the poor people have mostly been replaced by affluent young bourgeois professionals. (In the case of San Fransisco, this happens to a whole city). Who would be grinch-like enough to condemn the artists for adding value to poor materials (after all, they do that in their work too, buying cloth and canvas and making it into clothes and paintings)?
And yet wherever this happens, the graffitti follows: 'Yuppy scum out! Give us back our neighbourhood!'
So which side has your sympathy, the artists or the poor who can no longer afford the old neighbourhood? Do we lay the blame at the feet of later, more affluent generations of incomers, who take fewer risks, pay higher rents, and enhance the community less? Or do we choose as hate objects the canny property developers who buy low and sell high (just doing their job, guv'nur)? Is there anything inherently wrong with using creativity to add value?

erm, as it was all for a dare there was no consummation, but i was manually stimulated in turn by the girl i pulled and a boy who was also in the room, who wanted to see my knob in a fully erect state. alas, i had drunk far too much to get it all the way up (it still beat HIS even at 90%) and the full glory was spared. there were 3 boys and 3 girls in the room, all 3 boys and 1 of the girls were fully naked, and the other 2 girls were only wearing knickers. the night ended (after the naked girl upped sticks and headed off) with a wanking contest, the 2 remaining girls (whose idea it was) watching intently as we strived to bring ourselves to climax. it took me about twice as long as anyone else, mostly through fear of being struck by another's jet, being as i was in the centre of the three. throughout, i was made up in lipstick, rouge and a headband, and when i had been wearing clothes it had been drag. one of those ordinary student nights, then...

Somewhat inexplicably, their name keeps getting mentioned here, when to my ears, they're nothing but cookie-cutter, generic cheese-whiz R'n'B with nothing to offer the world but bitchy 'diva' behavior, cliched/overzealous vocal stylings and wretchedly stupid lyrics. Their new single, "Survivor" is not only cloying and numbingly repetitive, but it's just the rehash of the middle-eight of their *LAST* single, the equally-annoying "Say My Name." Why are people snowed by this watered-down pabulum? Are they really offering something that's new and different or even well-executed? Do they really have anything relevant to say beyond gratuitous self-aggrandized rhetoric? Didn't we hear all this stuff already in the form of the vastly superior En Vogue? Granted, Beyonce's a decent looking woman, but B.F.D.! PEOPLE, THEY'RE CRAP! Hi, I don't wanna make a big thing of this, but would it be possible to ban me from all areas of ILX until the second week of June? I've got arguably the most important 5 months of my life ahead of me. This isn't a sudden decision; I'm going back up to uni for my penultimate term today and from now on it's a clear run to exams. Besides, the break will do me good. If anyone wants to get in touch, you know where to find me.
Don't be swayed by any changes of heart I may have. If I start straining at the ropes like good Odysseus, crazed by the sirens' calls, you, the good oarsmen, keep a straight course.
See y'all on the other side,
LJ

Genesis started out with verse, bridge and chorus and built on the format to come up with masterpieces such as "Supper's Ready" (Yes, I admit my all time favourite "song" is not verse-bridge-chorus based).
Most of today's rap artists probably aren't even able to compose songs with verse, brigde and chorus, and if you haven't go those basic musical gifts then you shouldn't be making music at all.
