sad.

tipsy mothra, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 00:35 (eighteen years ago)

Renfro got his first big break when he was discovered by director Joel Schumacher, who cast the then 10-year-old in “The Client.”

hard not to think that didn't do him any favors.

Yeah it's all Joel's fault. He should have picked a kid who wasn't going to get strung out on heroin.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 00:39 (eighteen years ago)

Anyway it's probably Larry Clark's fault.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 00:39 (eighteen years ago)

it's none of their faults or anything. but he might have been better off as a local loser in knoxville.

tipsy mothra, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 00:41 (eighteen years ago)

Hindsight's always 20/20 in these cases. Still it doesn't seem like Hollywood does a very good of taking care of their child proteges. Of course neither does the NBA or the NFL so ya know whatever.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 00:43 (eighteen years ago)

Forget recriminations; it's terrible news. R.I.P.

Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 16 January 2008 00:47 (eighteen years ago)

oh no! this is shitty. i love the client so much. ;(

Surmounter, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 00:48 (eighteen years ago)

when he was at home in knoxville he would sometimes go to a local blues bar and play guitar at open-mic night. i saw him play once when he was probably 16 or so, he wasn't bad, and seemed into just hanging out with all the bar-band blues guys. everybody around town who knew him said he was a sweet kid.

:O

s1ocki, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 00:51 (eighteen years ago)

Whoa. Totally thought this was a joke at first. :(

jaymc, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 02:00 (eighteen years ago)

aw RIP. can't believe he was only 25, I thought he might have been older. A childhood friend of mine used to have a massive crush on him back in his teen beat days.

Roz, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 02:06 (eighteen years ago)

sad, but he was no jonathan brandis

remy bean, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 03:45 (eighteen years ago)

really sad :(

gershy, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 03:56 (eighteen years ago)

he got arrested in late 2000 in Broward County for some speedboat incident while filming Bully. He got a lot of local press.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 03:57 (eighteen years ago)

yr name is fun to say, bully is a masterpiece, rip buddy.

jhøshea, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 04:32 (eighteen years ago)

so little ILE interest! too much talent?

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 15:52 (eighteen years ago)

who?

dan m, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 16:08 (eighteen years ago)

Always got this dude confused with Brad Dourif.

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

I'd link to the R.I.P Brad Delp thread, but somebody would probably say "too soon!"

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 16:13 (eighteen years ago)

you totally dodged that bullet by describing doing so in detail instead of actually doing so, smooth move

n/a, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 16:17 (eighteen years ago)

You should try that onstage sometime, Nick.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 16:19 (eighteen years ago)

This sucks. I thought he was older, also.

"Dear Josh, we came by to fuck you, but you were not home. Therefore, you are gay. Signed Tiffany, and Amber."

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

Ah, you beat me to it!!

kate78, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 16:26 (eighteen years ago)

He's great in "Bully." I always thought he was a weird choice for Josh in "Ghost World," but he was fine. He's also great in "Apt Pupil," which is one of the better camp Holocaust movies.

Savannah Smiles, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 16:34 (eighteen years ago)

"Adam Brad was like a baby seal," says Jules Wandermann, director of BHSPA. "He fucking shimmered in the sun."

mookieproof, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 16:37 (eighteen years ago)

camp Holocaust movies

oh, what a phrase.

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 16:38 (eighteen years ago)

late decemb....n/m

river wolf, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

"He's also great in "Apt Pupil," which is one of the better camp Holocaust movies."

??? That movie's awful and Renfro's awful in it (about as bad as Gandalf.) It's not even camp (accidently or intentionally). Ilsa is a better film.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 18:03 (eighteen years ago)

I had heard the same stories re: his hanging out and playing blues music in and around Knoxville. Seems like he was just a regular guy who didn't have the support mechanism to deal with the fame.

Too bad. RIP

B.L.A.M., Wednesday, 16 January 2008 18:09 (eighteen years ago)

one of the better camp Holocaust movies was meant to be all sarcastic-like!

APT PUPIL is godawful - but knowing some of the history of that shoot (the sundry lawsuits - there's a juicy LA WEEKLY cover story from several years back that should be out there somewhere) helps make it an extra creepy watch. I did like Renfro in it, though.

But yes, he's no Dyanne Thorne!

Savannah Smiles, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 18:14 (eighteen years ago)

Ghost World is even sadder now.

I know, right?, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 20:36 (eighteen years ago)

but not actually any better

and what, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 20:40 (eighteen years ago)

Is this a suicide?
