Scott Foundas: "Cassandra's Dream (scheduled to open for an Oscar-qualifying run last month before being unceremoniously bumped to January) feels like one of Allen's laziest pieces of writing and direction, leaden with heavy metaphor and characters who rarely make it beyond the archetype—marionettes in a miserabilist puppet theater."

awful trailer, Brits screaming in rain is his new crutch
― Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 15:49 (eighteen years ago)

Come Anticipate Woody Allen's "Cassandra's Dream"
no. I love the old guy, but... no.
― kenan, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 16:44 (eighteen years ago)
I'll see it
― Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 17:00 (eighteen years ago)
Dear Woody,
Scarlett is no Diane Keaton. Please find someone who's hot and capable of emoting.
― milo z, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 18:25 (eighteen years ago)
she's not in this, I don't believe
― Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 18:28 (eighteen years ago)
this may be the first time I sit through a Colin Farrell movie
― Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 18:33 (eighteen years ago)
he's good when the material's good!
― Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 18:35 (eighteen years ago)
so not gonna anticipate this
― s1ocki, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 18:35 (eighteen years ago)

Ooops, right you are, Morbs. She's in the Woody movie about Barcelona.
― milo z, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 18:36 (eighteen years ago)
I'd probably watch New World, just haven't sought it out. I'm not completely in love with Malick or anything.
― Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 18:54 (eighteen years ago)
Trailer for this got me interested throughout, then got to the end and went "holy shit this is a woody allen?" Now I gotta see.
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 21:13 (eighteen years ago)
He's the worst part of The New World. He's good in Intermission, I think, and pretty good in Minority Report (except of course he has the awful scene with Von Sydow which ruins it)? That might be it. Otherwise I'm not a big fan.
― Alex in SF, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 21:15 (eighteen years ago)
lol, Armond White writes it's a pity this was bumped from December, cuz it belongs with all those "grim, drab, hateful, anti-human movies" that made 2007 "a great movie year" for the NY Times critics. "Prime Woody Allen muck."
― Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 21:23 (eighteen years ago)
too bad Vincent Canby's dead.
― Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 21:26 (eighteen years ago)
hahaha
Anyway this looks like it might be good. That Armond hates is a good sign.
― Alex in SF, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 21:29 (eighteen years ago)
I dunno, the trailer looked sharp, or maybe I was fooled by the effective lighting and Tom Wilkinson snapping like a turtle.
― Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 21:31 (eighteen years ago)
The crime stuff looks as embarrassing as in Match Point, youse are crazee
― Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 21:32 (eighteen years ago)
I saw the trailer before I'd heard anything about the movie, and the audience gasped when the writer-director credits came up.
― Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 21:33 (eighteen years ago)
Colin's John Smith was no great performance, but he had a luscious, gloomy presence.
― Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 21:40 (eighteen years ago)
I think was completely miscast.
― Alex in SF, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 21:41 (eighteen years ago)
Agreed. He was distracting – "what's Colin Farrell doing with hair extensions and knickerbockers?"
― Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 21:43 (eighteen years ago)
the new world is awesome and so is miami vice
― That one guy that hit it and quit it, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 21:43 (eighteen years ago)
that's pretty much the only way I'd take Colin
― Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 21:45 (eighteen years ago)
Match Point was okay, it was kind of Highsmith-y.
― Jordan, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 21:47 (eighteen years ago)
LET'S NOT START THIS DEBATE AGAIN
― Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 21:50 (eighteen years ago)
I saw the trailer before I'd heard anything about the movie, and the audience gasped when the writer-director credits came up
^^^ditto
― Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 21:58 (eighteen years ago)
just another reason to think that audiences are stupid
― mizzell, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 22:00 (eighteen years ago)
I guess I am stupid then. there was certainly nothing in the presentation fo the trailer that gave any hint it was a Woody Allen movie.
altho yes I know trailers rarely indicate anything useful about the actual quality of the movie being advertised
― Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 22:01 (eighteen years ago)
I knew what it was, but same thing happened w/ M.Point trailer
― Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 22:02 (eighteen years ago)
he has made dramas about crime before
like the last one
unless this is being presented as an action movie or something
― mizzell, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 22:03 (eighteen years ago)
Woody did an NPR interview 2 weeks ago and still can't believe Hollywood Ending wasn't recognized as one of his best. "I'm the only acta not to be nominated for an Academy Awahd for playing a blind person!"
― Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 22:05 (eighteen years ago)
its all in the presentation - his name appeared at the END, no use of his traditional font, none of his usual music, etc.
By all means, please point out what in the trailer screamed "WOODY ALLEN MOVIE" to you
x-post
― Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 22:08 (eighteen years ago)
I'm the only acta not to be nominated for an Academy Awahd for playing a blind person!
hahaha okay that is funny. next he should gain a bunch of weight and wear an ugly prosthetic nose and forehead
Shakey, his producers have stripped all those old Woody Allen Movie characteristics from him, or he gets no tapioca after dinner.
― Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 22:10 (eighteen years ago)
so everyone anticipated this (except me:
― s1ocki, Wednesday, January 16, 2008 1:35 PM (2 years ago) Bookmark)
but did anyone see it? cuz i did last night and it was pretty good! better than the new one for sure
― If Airplanes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport (s1ocki), Monday, 27 September 2010 15:46 (fifteen years ago)
so no one saw it
― If Airplanes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport (s1ocki), Monday, 27 September 2010 19:06 (fifteen years ago)
I saw it and I recall not liking it, but I can't remember much specific about it beside that.
― Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Monday, 27 September 2010 19:07 (fifteen years ago)
I didn't. I've kinda given up on Woody at this point, haven't remotely liked anything since Match Point.
― Gene Shalit in a Child's Sailor Hat (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 27 September 2010 19:07 (fifteen years ago)
it's another morality play like match point. i think it might be his best of the decade.
― If Airplanes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport (s1ocki), Monday, 27 September 2010 19:45 (fifteen years ago)
i liked this!
i think it reminded me of 'before the devil knows you're dead'?

you're the worst movie i have seen in the last 10 years.
― If Airplanes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport (s1ocki), Monday, 27 September 2010 19:48 (fifteen years ago)
that's not saying a whole lot s1ocki... altho I have found your recommendations to be pretty trustworthy in general
― Gene Shalit in a Child's Sailor Hat (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 27 September 2010 19:48 (fifteen years ago)
lol z-post
Maybe you have to be British to appreciate fully just how bad this is. But even on a technical level it's a disaster.
― Stevie T, Monday, 27 September 2010 19:50 (fifteen years ago)
Really, stevie t's my favorite movie in the last 10 years.
― buzza, Monday, 27 September 2010 19:52 (fifteen years ago)
"you have to be british to understand how bad this woody allen movie is" doesnt really compute
nor does "on a technical level" - vilmos zsigmond iirc
― If Airplanes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport (s1ocki), Monday, 27 September 2010 19:54 (fifteen years ago)
i really can't believe this is the worst movie anyone has seen in the past 10 years unless they have only seen like, this and one other movie.
it is pretty good.
― akm, Monday, 27 September 2010 19:54 (fifteen years ago)
