Do you get fan email perhaps from people who've read posts of yours on this board and are now madly in love with you or in love with what you write, or maybe have read your blog or webpage?
I get some every couple of days and I never respond to it. I feel vaguely bad about that.

Melissa W, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've had the odd e-mail. Usually questions, I haven't responded to them, as I haven't know the answer.

I've had the odd e-mail. Usually questions, I haven't responded to them, as I haven't known the answer. (double post coz of SP!)

jel --, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I once got one through my page from some guy who called me his angel. It was creepy.

bnw, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

you don't even respond to say "sorry, don't know"? How rude.

I never get fan mail.

It's funny how these things work though, over on sinister it's de rigeur to mail people offlist and say "nice mail" things to them, but here that kind of friendliness is seen as the mark of a mentalist.

DV, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i get mail, partly because of this, and partly because of ilx. i respond, as and when seems appropriate

gareth, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i got offered a job by an Indonesian newspaper last sept

a-33, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i got fanmail from the dirty vicar!!

mark s, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

except it might have been sarcastic

mark s, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I always reply to pple from ILX (sorry, if I haven't). I guess it is a bit rude not to reply, maybe I will now.

jel --, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have to make do with Sexi Mandi.

Ronan, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Noooo, I thought Mandi was only emailing me.

bnw, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I get a bit of fan mail. If it's from regular posters I respond. I also was connected back with a photographer friend I was writing about in a thread; he was ego-surfing and got in touch when he saw what I'd written. I do tend to ignore random folks due to their tendency to tell boring life stories and overcompliment.

Oh, can't wait for Nicholas "Suck My Guestbook" Currie to pen an epistle re: electronic apostles.

suzy, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I forgot to reply to Maura a while ago and now it seems too late.

N., Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bnw, I was replying to Jel, not you.

DV, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I shall endeavour to reply to all e-mails from now on.

jel --, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am still awful at replying to people. Sorry people.

Tom, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Especially since the half-dozen times I have actually bothered to do it good things have come of it.

Tom, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The only "fan" mail I get is from angry Janet Jackon fans, or people who tell me I suck for liking Destiny's Child, based on something I wrote about them a year or so ago.

Nicole, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ouch. I've gotten a few notes over time. Mostly positive, but the most recent one was from that nutter who posted that 'Why am I impotent?' thread in 'my' name on ILM. He tried to provoke me and I just patiently explained why he was wasting his time, so there we are.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i had an email from someone wanting a copy of the streets album. i haven't got round to replying yet.

toby, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hadn't checked my [web-based] ILX edress for months, did so, & discovered it's (another.com) now a pay site & won't let me in the bastards. Doubt I missed much tho feh wheez sploop.

AP, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ned, that guy was brilliant! has he got a crush on you or something. it was kind of sweet, in a slightly unsettling fashion

gareth, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

In his own way, it was twisted brilliance, yes. :-)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, it was a bit like a schoolboy making fun of a girl he likes to get her attention.

Nicole, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i got a geeky record question - well, the question wasn't geeky but the answer it required was. was about getting a copy of Aretha Franklin's One Step Ahead track on vinyl. that's all i've got i think. i never got round to writing love letters to Melissa...

michael, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I will get more love if I defect to the Poodle Support Group, those people are worshipped like gods.

Nicole, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Someone wrote to me asking where they could find a copy of "Barbed Wire Kisses", I guess I must have mentioned it on ILM.

I got a note from Anthony Easton a note that said "midgets midgets midgets - pass it on", which I don't think is fan mail but one never knows.

fritz, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've gotten love mail; I've gotten hate mail. All because of my site. I've gotten more love mail than hate mail (and, really, one piece of hate mail I rec'd was more grumpy than spiteful). I've also been asked about Dave Matthews Band tickets - this was back in '97, though.

I'm sitting on 2 friendly messages right now, as a matter of fact; they're the first I've gotten in a while. Alas.

Daver, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

At least you get friendly messages, ya whiner. ;-)

Oh, and thanks for pointing out the Aguilera horror btw.

Nicole, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I've gotten email relating to an ilx post only once. ONCE! And it wasn't fan mail, either. I like e-mail and I am good at replying to it, so go ahead and send it, fules!

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm sure I've gotten some ILX-related mail but don't remember it separately. I get a good deal of mail about my blog, but I could be getting more based on how many people read it, ahem.

Josh, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've gotten fan email from someone who found me here, but fan mail had to do with my sordid past, rather than anything I had posted here.

Colin Meeder, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know what was more jarring, seeing the line "A Tribute to the Hated" or the pop-up ad featuring a glistening, firelit and mostly naked Rock advertising The Scorpion King.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi – My name is Ahrani and I am a researcher with an independent TV production company in Londoncalled Outline Productions. We are making a 10 X 30 minute series for BBC Choice called “Born in the Seventies” about 22 to 35 year olds in the UK. Each programme focuses on a different aspect of the lifestyles of this age group – from Health to Work to Looks to Nightlife etc…

Each show will feature six different stories about people within this age group who live very different lives.

For the Health programme we are keen to speak with people who don’t take care of their personal hygiene; obsessed with uncleanliness and go for days without washing.

I found your e-mail on a site chatting about “How long is the longest you’ve gone without washing?”

We are filming the week beginning8th April 2002through until10th May 2002and are keen to speak with people at some point this week/ as soon as possible.

I hope you can help!

Many thanks in advance,

I look forward to hearing from you very soon!

Best Regards,

Ahrani Thiriloganathan (Miss)

(pah why do they not want to interview me about political solutions in the middle east?!)

mark s, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oh she's posted herself i see, on the "baths: NO!" thread

mark s, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(yr too old, Mark)

RickyT, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have gotten a total of 1 fan email. It was nice, but I didn't respond since all I could have said was "um.. wow, thanks" or something of the sort.

Honda, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I once got an email about a response to a post I made. I think it had something to do with The Paradise Motel. Should have known better.

electric sound of jim, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

no one ever emails me.

chaki, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

scary Dunedin people found my sites and webdiary and they've been stalking me ever since. poor deluded souls think i'm cool or something...quelle dommage!

petra jane, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Um, well I did get an e-card today, but I was not allowed to read it or find out who it was from because the contents violated the e-card site's "terms of service". So I don't know if it was a "fan" or a weird form of spam. Probably the latter.

Nicole, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It was spam. All of their "e-cards" say that. It's probably a close relative of sendacrush.com

electric sound of jim, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

you mean that's SPAM? someone DOESN'T have a secret crush on me??! aww gip!

thanks for bursting that bubble, Jim.

petra jane, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was suckered in too.... *sobs quietly*

electric sound of jim, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I got that one too!

jel --, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hang on jim - what is the point of this ecard company if all its ecards are unreadable? And how are they hoping to make money? Banner ads on a site that just annoys everyone? Well, I suppose there have been crazier dot.com business plans..

N., Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The make you put all these details about yourself in before you can "see your card".. *sigh*

electric sound of jim, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

two months pass...
someone named rex is mailing like snail mailing me pages and pages on sosbert sitwell, this is beyond cool.

anthony, Sunday, 26 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i avoid this dilemma by not posting anything intelligent or interesting

Ron, Sunday, 26 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

THAT IS TOTAL BULLSHIT

anthony, Sunday, 26 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ron: I do that, too. I'm figuring that if I keep posting silly, sex- ridden one-liners and boring trivia instead of long, thoughtful posts, I can stay fanless forever.

Christine "Green Leafy Dragon" Indigo, Monday, 27 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Anthony: I've never had any interest in Osbert Sitwell (despite the funny name), but here is a fine extended simile that I came across earlier today: "Poetry is like fish: if it's fresh, it's good; if it's stale, it's bad; and if you're not certain, try it on the cat."

As for fan mail, I was astonished to receive one lovely one in relation to ILX activity, from someone who I've not noticed posting. First fan mail I've received in years (used to get quite a lot - no, really).

Martin Skidmore, Monday, 27 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What happened in those 12 minutes?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

They came to their senses?

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

did you email them back?

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

No. I thought it impolite.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the exact same movies as you!!! Please email me back

brings a tear to my eye for all the wrong reasons. i wish i got stuff like that. but in my heart i know if i did, i'd ignore it. arrrgh.

g-kit (g-kit), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh I don't know. My ground rule for non-ILXor emailers is: if you're nice to me I'll email you back, even if only to say thanks.

I do get a lot of friendly emails from ILXors to which I don't necessarily respond (because they usually don't require an answer), but I like to think that they know I've received and read them (e.g. the many excellent pieces which Robin C has sent to me in recent months).

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 7 January 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i can ditto that about robin c

particularly the hood piece. great stuff!

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Not at all fan mail - but sorry to Mark C who sent me a lovely e-mail a while back and i didn't reply and then it was too long ago and I thought I'd see him to explain and I didn't and now I feel rude. Public apology.

(Also Aaron W - I wrote an intelligent reply, my computer died. Will mail before ned of week.)

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

[Ned of Week postponed owing to persistent trouble with broadband connection]

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Some people obviously have to wait for their neducation.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't get fan mail, I just get mail about fancying "conservative muthafuckaz". Which is kind of entertaining anyway, so I don't mind.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I am notoriously bad at answering fanmail. Which is probably why I don't get much of it any more. I used to be good at answering, or at least diverting "fans" (use that in quotes because some of them ended up becomin friends) into my mailing lists and getting them to participate in conversation. But then I had some experiences with mentalists - including letting a mentalist fan be in the band (j/k!) - and got bad at it.

kate, Tuesday, 7 January 2003 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I got this regarding a banoffee pie recipe I posted here.

"Fill a slow cooker with boiling water and immerse the tin - leave for a few hours, you can forget it and it won't come to any harm."

Nearest thing to fan mail I've ever got

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Also Aaron W - I wrote an intelligent reply, my computer died.

Hurray for me about to get email! Boo to crapola computers! I don't even remember what I wrote... it was probably inspired by the mountain of boredom here at work.

Aaron W, Tuesday, 7 January 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned of Week postponed owing to persistent trouble with broadband connection

I'm everywhere these days, aren't I? (And for now I'm making do at home with a slow but sturdy modem connection as I wait for DSL in a week...)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

not much fan mail :(

but...i am now getting spam in german!!

?!?!?

geeta, Tuesday, 7 January 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I get the German spam too, and French spam, and Chinese spam!

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Aww Anna, don't worry about it. You can grovel on Saturday!

I don't get fanmail. Very very occasional questions, though. Even the column I write gets the fewest comments of all the ones on the site. Shame really.

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

What 'column'?

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I got fanmail once cos I was mildly but apparently amusingly disparaging about Groove Armada in a magazine. I am "one fucking funny bastard" apparently...well whaddya know?

Mind you, the chap in question (also a writer) seemed to think we were kindred spirits, and when I looked up some of his stuff it was rubbish - so maybe it doesn't count if the "fan" has shit taste!

including letting a mentalist fan be in the band

Kate, get back in yer box.

Charlie (Charlie), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 03:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never gotten a fan email, and really think I deserve one.

Sean (Sean), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 03:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Now I'm just singing the Dickies...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 03:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh I got I think 3 or 4 emails over the last while and to be honest each one I found really brilliant and was delighted with. One was some guy who sent a mail about my Viva Bugged Out review saying how he'd always thought "Good Life" into "My Sweet Lord" was an amazing mix aswell, I got another from an Underworld fan who read the article when it was posted on the other site I write for. There is nothing better than getting praise from someone who likes whatever you've been talking about, it's amazing and as much a reason to write as anything else.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

There was one person on another forum who set up a hotmail account to send me an "anonymous" crush letter. Except her writing style was so distinct that I knew who it was immediately. She was well aware that her crush was hopeless, at least.

Nevertheless, it seemed like a bad idea to respond to that sort of (vaguely-creepy) "fan mail". Or at least I think that was the lesson I learned from tv.
