you forgot bridge problems (but who cares? fuck a bridge)

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 22:32 (eighteen years ago)

I was thinking about that, but I only ever read the first and last paragraphs of our bridge column. They were the start and end of an amusing anecdote or quotation. Having never read the middle paragraphs, I didn't know if they were "figure out this bridge thing" like chess puzzles or "here's how to be better at bridge."

went with ordinary crossword .... sudoku a close second

Jumble: so corny

dmr, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 22:41 (eighteen years ago)

Arrivederci, Omar.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 22:44 (eighteen years ago)

I have a huge soft spot for the Jumbles. The JUMBLES!

Abbott, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 22:46 (eighteen years ago)

You've convinced me.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 22:47 (eighteen years ago)

Cryptic crossword!

Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 22:50 (eighteen years ago)

I'm a bit surprised to learn that newspapers out in BFA have cryptics.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 22:50 (eighteen years ago)

I do sometimes like to solve the final pun without bothering to un-jumble the Jumbles

dmr, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 22:51 (eighteen years ago)

Some Jumblers fill in only the circled letters.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 22:52 (eighteen years ago)

BFA certainly does not have cryptics but I did not want to be pelted with "where my cryptics."

Abbott, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 22:52 (eighteen years ago)

Me and my brother, every morning before school, we'd set a timer and see who could solve the Jumble fastest. During breakfast.

Abbott, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 22:53 (eighteen years ago)

Always under 2 minutes.

Abbott, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 22:53 (eighteen years ago)

"where my cryptics."
I think they're at Applebee's, with nabisco & co.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 22:56 (eighteen years ago)

All this other stuff is Poochie to the classic crossword.

Jordan, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 22:59 (eighteen years ago)

I removed kind of a crucial verb

Abbott, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 22:59 (eighteen years ago)

Poochie? A dog?

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 23:02 (eighteen years ago)

ordinary crossword = elegant and reliable Itchy & Scratchy

Jordan, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 23:04 (eighteen years ago)

CryptoQuote = Worker and Parasite

The Yellow Kid, Thursday, 17 January 2008 03:41 (eighteen years ago)

The Jumble = Happy Little Elves

Abbott, Thursday, 17 January 2008 03:56 (eighteen years ago)

They're Jumblin', baby.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Thursday, 17 January 2008 03:59 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't actually looked at the Jumble in years. Is it my imagination or did the accompanying cartoons have kind of a Don Martin look to them?

James Redd and the Blecchs, Thursday, 17 January 2008 04:02 (eighteen years ago)

They kind of remind me more of the Lockhorns or Howard Huge, but I can see the Martin vibe.

Abbott, Thursday, 17 January 2008 05:52 (eighteen years ago)

What did Shirley Temple have as an ambassador?

"OOOOOO-O-OOOOO" OOOOOOOO

Abbott, Thursday, 17 January 2008 05:53 (eighteen years ago)

There's a reason the punchlines are short.

Abbott, Thursday, 17 January 2008 05:53 (eighteen years ago)

(Ans: "Dimple-o-matic" Immunity)

Abbott, Thursday, 17 January 2008 05:54 (eighteen years ago)

(You wouldn't have gotten that, would you?)

Abbott, Thursday, 17 January 2008 05:54 (eighteen years ago)

(Especially without any letters from which to anagramble it.)

The Yellow Kid, Saturday, 19 January 2008 00:30 (eighteen years ago)

I don't even think of non-cryptics as proper crosswords, hardly.

Noodle Vague, Saturday, 19 January 2008 00:38 (eighteen years ago)

you misspelled "I am a dick"

nabisco, Saturday, 19 January 2008 00:51 (eighteen years ago)

j/k

nabisco, Saturday, 19 January 2008 00:52 (eighteen years ago)

Still, though, that post sounds like a rejected Frasier gag

nabisco, Saturday, 19 January 2008 00:52 (eighteen years ago)

Ha, Yellow Kid, we used to make up our own Wordy Gurdy's. Like

Raggett's Prescriptions (1)

It's a UK thing, nabisco. I don't think NVague has ever been to this side of the pond.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Saturday, 19 January 2008 01:16 (eighteen years ago)

I am just making fun, because "I can barely conceive of them as proper crosswords" makes a person sound, to put it transAtlantically, a bit like the Hyacinth Bucket of broadsheet puzzles

nabisco, Saturday, 19 January 2008 01:20 (eighteen years ago)

I had to look that last one up. The Frasier gag was pretty funny.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Saturday, 19 January 2008 01:33 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah the Frasier gag was lulz. From what I've learned online, I realise that yr "straight" crosswords are a bit deeper than the ones over here. Which I should've said last night only I was tired and just typing for the sake of it really. I would still rep for a really well-crafted cryptic clue over most things tho.

Noodle Vague, Saturday, 19 January 2008 12:45 (eighteen years ago)

Codeword, man, it's all about CODEWORD. But so far that only seems to be in the Times and the Evening Bastard.

Masonic Boom, Saturday, 19 January 2008 14:01 (eighteen years ago)

If codewords are the ones where each letter is assigned a number which is filled in on a crossword grid and you're given two or three starter letters to crack them, I quite like them too, but will probably still vote for cryptic crosswords.

(Is '"Figure out coded quote" puzzle' one of the codewords with a quote at the bottom to decipher once you've done the grid, or is it something else?)

a passing spacecadet, Saturday, 19 January 2008 15:07 (eighteen years ago)

>> Codeword, man, it's all about CODEWORD. But so far that only seems to be in the Times and the Evening Bastard.

> If codewords are the ones where each letter is assigned a number...

then they are also available in The Sun.

Wordy Gurdy reminds me of Wonky Donkey.

koogs, Saturday, 19 January 2008 15:15 (eighteen years ago)

I was able to do Cryptoquotes for about six months and then somehow lost my ability.

Pleasant Plains, Saturday, 19 January 2008 15:43 (eighteen years ago)

You probably got bored.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Saturday, 19 January 2008 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

All my the's turned out to be and's.

Pleasant Plains, Saturday, 19 January 2008 18:09 (eighteen years ago)

Sounds like the title of a lost country classic from Schoolhouse Rock.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Saturday, 19 January 2008 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Sunday, 20 January 2008 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

Too bad somebody like Jim Ford didn't write some of those Grammar Rocks.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Sunday, 20 January 2008 02:44 (eighteen years ago)

No love for the Acrostic in the Sunday Times?

Mr. Goodman, Sunday, 20 January 2008 04:29 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Monday, 21 January 2008 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

I like the unscramble the word and take the bubbled letters and unscramble them for the answer to a comic... because sudokus are boring and crossword puzzles are too hard.

CaptainLorax, Monday, 21 January 2008 01:11 (eighteen years ago)

slylock fox... is he still around?

CaptainLorax, Monday, 21 January 2008 01:32 (eighteen years ago)

slylock fox is more famous than ever!

Oilyrags, Monday, 21 January 2008 01:32 (eighteen years ago)

I think that is exclusively due to the Comics Curmudgeon. Cpn Lorax, the name of your preferred puzzle is the Jumble. The JUMBLE!

Abbott, Monday, 21 January 2008 01:36 (eighteen years ago)

> I think that is exclusively due to the Comics Curmudgeon.

Probably. But still.

Oilyrags, Monday, 21 January 2008 01:51 (eighteen years ago)

I voted for the Jumble as promised. If they actually put quality, reasonably challenging American language cryptics on a daily basis in the US papers, I'd have voted for that.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Monday, 21 January 2008 01:55 (eighteen years ago)

That Jumble was...

James Redd and the Blecchs, Monday, 21 January 2008 02:06 (eighteen years ago)

THAW-SOME!

James Redd and the Blecchs, Monday, 21 January 2008 02:06 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry. Maybe thread title should now have the words "Jumble Spoiler" added.

Thaw-some

James Redd and the Blecchs, Monday, 21 January 2008 02:17 (eighteen years ago)

Here's an almost Wordy Gurdy for you:

Rudolph nemesis involved in corny wordplay puzzle (4 words)

James Redd and the Blecchs, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 01:59 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe should reword as

Rudolph nemesis implicated in corny wordplay

James Redd and the Blecchs, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 02:06 (eighteen years ago)

BUMBLE'S JUMBLES

You have made my evening!

Abbott, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 03:30 (eighteen years ago)

oh four words :(

Abbott, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 03:31 (eighteen years ago)

That's basically it, Abbott! I was looking for

BUMBLE IN THE JUMBLE

I guess I could change the clue to "Wordplay of Rudolph's nemesis (2)" so that your answer works.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 03:34 (eighteen years ago)

Elfen dentists from Myanmar (2)

James Redd and the Blecchs, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 04:07 (eighteen years ago)

(I am so sorry)

James Redd and the Blecchs, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 04:07 (eighteen years ago)

BURMESE HERMIES!

OMG James you are making me die with the happy. Rankin Bass specials (esp Rudolph) + ridic word games is kind of my idea of a perfect time! (Plus I have a whiskey sour here, so.)

Abbott, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 04:11 (eighteen years ago)

Here's one more joke on this theme you might enjoy, Abbott.
