Do any of you listen to old radio shows?
They are pretty much all I want to hear when I am going to sleep.

― Tracer Hand, Thursday, 17 January 2008 01:39 (eighteen years ago)
I'd like to hear that.

Not sure if this qualifies as an old radio show per se, but I can't get enough of this material (Cylinder Preservation and Digitization Project).
― Daniel, Esq., Thursday, 17 January 2008 01:43 (eighteen years ago)
one of the shows i've got has lauren bacall too! the plot involves a "fallen girl" and an unscrupulous gambling kingpin who lives on a houseboat or something
― Tracer Hand, Thursday, 17 January 2008 01:46 (eighteen years ago)
if pre-9/11 counts as old-time I love the vintage Coast to Coast they've been playing lately.

One of the best "Newsradio" episodes was when the A/C was out and they just put a tape of Fibber McGee & Mollie on the air.

DYKE EASTER is a P.I. who runs a small one-man agency. At times he is bitter and cynical. He frequently states "murder is my business". He also has a habit of asking the listener questions and seems at times to be overly melodramatic.

I have a ton of Burns and Allen shows, and I'm starting in on the Jack Benny program. And, for non-OTR old radio needs, "I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again."
They're great for falling asleep listening to, when I'm not in the mood for a Teaching Company lecture.

I've got multiple GBs of Old Time Radio. Fave shows are Dragnet, X Minus 1, The Shadow, Groucho's You Bet Your Life, I Was A Communist For The FBI, Box 13, The Goon Show, Casey Crime Photographer, Alien Worlds, The Whistler, Dangerous Assignment, Suspense, Yours Truly Johnny Dollar, Big Town, Night Beat, Ann Of The Airlanes, Sam Spade, and my favorite name for anything: Strange Dr. Weird
I grew up listening to CBS Radio Mystery Theater every night in the 70s just before going to bed - there's lots of great stories in there. E.G. Marshall's spooky "PLLEEEAAAASSSSAAANNNTTT DREEEEAAAMMMSS??!!" at the end was usually the last thing I heard before crashing out. I hold this partially responsible for how I am today. Couple years later, KNX radio in LA would run double headers of all kinds of shows (including my beloved Dragnet and X Minus 1)
I still listen a lot to everything... CBS RMT episodes and the all important Jean Shepherd podcast: http://shepcast.blogspot.com/

There's an AM station here that's strictly for over 65 year olds, it's great: http://www.mytalk.com.au/Stations/Music/Magic1278/Pages/default.aspx Late at night it broadcasts the BBC world service.
Not old timey, but there's a great archive of the Negativland associated shows 'Over The Edge' and 'Puzzling Evidence'.

You Bet Your Life is great for (1) Groucho, obviously, and (2) hearing the diction of the contestants.

Been consuming a lot of Goon Show this year and have started branching out into Hancock's Half Hour and proto-Round The Horne show Beyond Our Ken.
I find myself more and more drawn to hearing some dude from the 50's make a terrible pun ("I'm Toulouse Latrec!" "what happens if you find him?"; "I was going to Stoke Newington but turns out someone had already stoked him") followed by a light entertainment orchestra. What else should I seek out?

Those are the exact three shows I've been listening to as well, I guess the only big name left is The Navy Lark. Educating Archie is terrible, Much-Binding-in-the-Marsh is maybe good but I've never got into it. For me Hancock's Half Hour is the key, just some incredible writing especially around the third and fourth series.

Oh yeah and there's The Men from the Ministry, which is a bit too light service gentle comedy for my taste.

wow navy lark cast pretty stacked!
― a ZX spectrum is haunting Europe (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 21 December 2024 14:04 (one year ago)
I wouldn't get too excited, the writing isn't really up to the standard of Hancock or The Goons.

You definitely should try Take It From Here if you're not already familiar with it, it sounds almost exactly like your description but genuinely great too

The other night I listened to the 1938 Orson Welles / Mercury Theatre "Dracula," which was produced a few months before their famous "War of the Worlds" show -- not bad! It's an adaptation of the novel rather than the stage play, which lets Welles lean into using multiple narrators and documents. He also comes up with an ending that anticipates Coppola's (or maybe Coppola bit Welles' ending).

When I drive a lot more, I would listen to Ed Walker’s The Big Broadcast on Sunday nights on a local radio station in DC. Over three hours he’d play a whole variety of old-time radio, from comedies to drama. I was addicted to old episodes of the radio version of Gunsmoke, the plots were interesting and it was well acted and you could definitely hear consistent themes of having to make the less bad of two bad choices, and trying to retain integrity and a sense of fairness in a cynical world where power came from a gun. A few episodes had themes of pleas for understanding of those who are misfits in the society of e serial. I would wonder if the show was partially ghost written by blacklisted writers because you could definitely hear it through that lens.

From an episode of Beyond Our Ken:
Motorists - What Are They Driving At?
I may be the last person under sixty to love this kind of humour.

I thought "I do not wish to know that!" was one of the many Goon Show catchphrases, but it's started popping up in Hancock too - was he referencing the Goons or were they both referencing something else?

Sometimes I listen to 1940s Jack Benny shows on youtube. There are a few shows he did for servicemen during the war. I love how he lets the cast shine (the writing is so great), but he's obviously a master.
A great side plot is his 'feud' with Fred Allen, Allen usually talking about how cheap Benny is. A line I chuckle about all the time: 'Most men smoke a cigar until it burns down near their lips and then they throw it away. Jack smokes a cigar until it is extinguished by his gastric juices.'
