Jeff Treppel, Thursday, 17 January 2008 04:54 (eighteen years ago)

Sorta. Really Tombot kinda said I had to. I take his advice pretty seriously on matters like these.

BTW, BIG HOOS, you'll fuckin love The Wild Bunch. Drink while you watch it though. Makes it even better.

Helltime Redux, Thursday, 17 January 2008 05:02 (eighteen years ago)

Hey, that's cool. I honestly didn't think anyone else had seen that movie, so I'm psyched that the Gunhed gospel is spreading. And Le Cercle Rouge is great, Remy.

Oh, also, turning in The Wild Bunch will make'em send Standing In The Shadows of Motown, which I've seen like 3X and is awesome.

Helltime Redux, Thursday, 17 January 2008 05:24 (eighteen years ago)

Wordplay was sweet

I know the guys who made this.
I wish I had netflix again. Our love affair was short.
In that time, I experienced:
Scarecrow (really enjoyable 70's WTF co-starring Pacino and Hackman)
The Conversation
P-Funk Mothership Tour movie (a must see)
Rockers (this movie's greatness needs no further testimony, right?)
and more.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 17 January 2008 15:23 (eighteen years ago)

Just sent back: "Eagle vs. Shark" (funny, better than "Napoleon Dynamite")
Getting next: "Vernon, Florida" (continuing an Errol Morris theme, also recently watched "Gates of Heaven")

o. nate, Thursday, 17 January 2008 15:33 (eighteen years ago)

What did you think of the Kenneth Anger DVD, Rock?

I liked parts of it, like "Fireworks" and the amazing rich colors of "Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome". A fair amount of it bored me, but I'm sure it's because there are textual levels I don't know or care about. Not really interested in magick/occult stuff, for instance. I liked "Puce Moment," but thought "Rabbit's Moon" and "Eaux d'Artifice" were boring.

Rock Hardy, Thursday, 17 January 2008 15:37 (eighteen years ago)

Sent Back: Dog Soldiers. Awesome werewolf movie! hOOOOOWLLLLLLLL

Body Double - I loved the way depalma grafted hitchcock onto the landscape of the '80's.
Ghostbusters 2 - okay this was fucking terrible. bill murray almost saved it.

Just watched: Stardust - as of last night this is one of my favorites of '07. The last time I enjoyed a (<10 hour) fantasy movie this much Reagan was actor-in-chief.

andrew m., Friday, 18 January 2008 20:22 (eighteen years ago)

re: tideland, the director shouldn't have to come on before a movie and warn the audience. we shoulda known right then.

andrew m., Friday, 18 January 2008 20:24 (eighteen years ago)

I've been warned off of Tideland by every Gilliam fan I know. How was Sicko?

sexyDancer, Friday, 18 January 2008 22:14 (eighteen years ago)

sexyDancer, Friday, 18 January 2008 22:29 (eighteen years ago)

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Friday, 18 January 2008 22:30 (eighteen years ago)

Jonestown: The Life and Deathof the People's Temple

Is this the recent American Experience documentary that aired on PBS? God, that was creepy.

o. nate, Friday, 18 January 2008 22:47 (eighteen years ago)

watched:

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (i pressed play and just assumed the original was dubbed; it was great but i probably would have liked it a lot more with the subs!)
Crazy Train (great, so funny)

next:

The Leather Boys
Viridiana

strgn, Friday, 18 January 2008 22:58 (eighteen years ago)

Wouldn't the "original" have been dubbed into Italian from English?

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Friday, 18 January 2008 23:00 (eighteen years ago)

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly was intended to be watched in English. The actors in those old Leone movies spoke their native languages (English, Italian, or German), and then they were dubbed from there. So there is an Italian dialogue track, but I think the preferred cut is the English one.

Jeff Treppel, Friday, 18 January 2008 23:08 (eighteen years ago)

There usually is no "original" in Italian cinema. They're all dubbed without much care for synch.

xp: Yeah, Jonestown is a major, sinking bummer.

sexyDancer, Friday, 18 January 2008 23:09 (eighteen years ago)

Plus, would you rather hear Eastwood and Van Cleef's awesome voices, or some Italian dude dubbing them over? It would cause cognitive dissonance!

Jeff Treppel, Friday, 18 January 2008 23:11 (eighteen years ago)

ok thanks, that explains why clint was speaking english. i just thought tuco's dubbed voice was annoying. maybe i wasn't too sold on the character either. still a crazy/awesome movie though.

strgn, Friday, 18 January 2008 23:13 (eighteen years ago)

That was Eli Wallach's real voice, just synced badly a lot of the time. So I guess you just find his voice annoying? Anyway, phenomenal film. Definitely in my top 10 movies of all time.

Jeff Treppel, Friday, 18 January 2008 23:15 (eighteen years ago)

I love the dubbed kid's voice in "For a Few Dollars More." So loud and off. MAMA!

sexyDancer, Friday, 18 January 2008 23:25 (eighteen years ago)

Jonestown is probably my favorite doc from the last few years, and not just because the events were among the strangest in u.s. history. It's beautifully focused.

Cosmo Vitelli, Friday, 18 January 2008 23:45 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, it draws you in, puts your head under water, and holds it there.

sexyDancer, Friday, 18 January 2008 23:53 (eighteen years ago)

Patty Hearst documentary. Star Wars. I just re-registered since I got a new DVD player in November.

cecelia, Saturday, 19 January 2008 00:38 (eighteen years ago)

oh yea, sD otm. I forgot that about italian movies -- the majority were dubbed even into the 90s, right? But again, English is preferred.

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Saturday, 19 January 2008 00:52 (eighteen years ago)

fourteen years pass...

Finally considering discontinuing my Netflix red envelope subscription. I defended it for so long, but it seems we’ve reached the point where Netflix. Doesn’t. Have. Fucking. Shit. In terms of DVDs. I can’t even find promising garbage to put in my queue. Any dissenting opinions about this?

Josefa, Thursday, 7 April 2022 01:16 (three years ago)

You can probably just go to the newly revived Kim’s Video.

Came Here to Roll the Microscope (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 7 April 2022 01:33 (three years ago)

I don’t go to Manhattan

Josefa, Thursday, 7 April 2022 01:34 (three years ago)

Oh well.

Came Here to Roll the Microscope (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 7 April 2022 01:39 (three years ago)

I kid. I’m just trying to bust up inter-boro prejudices

Josefa, Thursday, 7 April 2022 01:43 (three years ago)

I fell reeeeeeaaaaaallly behind in my red envelope-ing during quarantine. Started up again in earnest recently-my queue is over 15 years old and has over 480 titles on it, some of which have been on there for at least 15 years.

Precious, Grace, Hill & Beard LTD. (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 7 April 2022 02:11 (three years ago)

Do you mean in your “Saved” list? Because those films you will never ever see

Josefa, Thursday, 7 April 2022 02:16 (three years ago)

Nope. That's my regular queue. I have around 80 films in the Saved queue, most of which probably won't come back, but I've been surprised there before.

Precious, Grace, Hill & Beard LTD. (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 7 April 2022 02:37 (three years ago)

Wow. I hope you’re able to see all of those films in your regular queue but I wouldn’t be surprised if many of them suddenly show up as unavailable. It seems to me Netflix is dissolving their DVD library in a comprehensive way right now.

Josefa, Thursday, 7 April 2022 02:43 (three years ago)

I get something good in the mail almost every day! Today I got Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Doppelgänger, which admittedly is not that great, but am next looking forward to receiving Rope, Tabu, The Secret of the Grain, Climax, Holy Mountain, Aquarius

Dan S, Thursday, 7 April 2022 03:16 (three years ago)

some of them are long waits, but they eventually show up. after 4 years of trying to burn through the archive, there are still hundreds of classic films on netflix dvd I haven't seen

Dan S, Thursday, 7 April 2022 03:25 (three years ago)

I kid. I’m just trying to bust up inter-boro prejudices

Ha. I figured this might be the case.

Came Here to Roll the Microscope (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 7 April 2022 10:04 (three years ago)

Maybe I can meet you at the Nitehawk one of these days to broker a peace.

Came Here to Roll the Microscope (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 7 April 2022 10:16 (three years ago)

two weeks pass...

Can you still sign up for a new red envelope plan or is it purely grandfathered?
