buying US books in london

are there any bookshops in london with a good stock of US imports? for example, i keep thinking about buying donald barthelme's 40/60 stories, and also that new michael moore, but i'd also like to be able to browse them first (call me old-fashioned). is there an alternative to amazon.com?

i assume you've tried huntind down barthelme stuff at one of the big chains, like Heffer's or border's? that's where i picked up 60 stories... it is odd/interesting what ends up being easily available. it took me ages to get my hands on any denis johnson stuff out here in cambridge, but other US authors of similar fame seem to be constantly well-stocked.

Borders on Oxford St has the best Bartheleme section in London - though that isn't saying much. I think you can get 'The Teachings of Don B' and maybe 60 stories there. The best place is the interweb. I just got 'Snow White' from Amazon, and it's been out of print for 20 years!

40 and 60 stories were published in the UK by Secker&Warburg (H/C) and (I think) Minerva (P/B); they're out of print, but shouldn't be too tough to find 2nd hand.

'Murder One' on Charing Cross Road prob. imports more American paperbacks than any other UK bkshop, tho' generally only crime/SF/romance titles.
