We want a stand-alone movie, not a mythology conspiracy one. = oops, it's been like 10 years since anyone without severe social problems could remember / cared about the overarching lamebutt alien stuff
I could definitely enjoy X-Files movies -- hell, a franchise of them -- that followed the standard random-episode thing from the TV show: i.e., series of strange deaths turns out to be caused by/connected to person with some weird monstrous ability or supernatural quality

That was him.
― clotpoll, Thursday, 17 January 2008 23:12 (eighteen years ago)
I wonder what Billy Connolly's role will be? As much as I love Darin Morgan's episodes, I don't want this to be a comedy - something along the lines of the first two seasons would be good, as story with some genuine mystery, something original. Chris Carter has written some great stories (the Millennium episode "Lamentation" is his masterpiece), but that was a long time ago, and everything he's done in recent years has been one failure after another.

― max, Friday, 25 July 2008 06:47 (seventeen years ago)
its not BAD
i've been hearing, at best, "mixed" things about this.
― latebloomer, Friday, 25 July 2008 06:50 (seventeen years ago)
so yeah, this is basically just a 2-hour episode of the tv show. and while i dont necessarily have a problem with that (not in theory at least), at some point i dont know why this couldnt have just been a 'network premiere' or something. i mean actually this is basically the law & order 'movie' from a few years ago--extended version of whats basically a single-show plot, and in the end not particularly 'cinematic.' carter still directs like he's on TV, all the shots are tight close-ups of faces, and it just seems sort of small--not very many people, it doesnt really go anywhere, all of which would be more forgiveable if i was watching it on tv instead of paying 10 bucks to see it in the theaters.
the other thing is that its not even a great premise. if it were an episode of the tv show, it wouldnt be in my top 10 or even 20 probably. pretty standard "is he or isnt he a psychic," mulder thinks he is, scully is on the fence, ends inconclusively (its getting harder for scully to be a believable skeptic given that shes like, had sex with aliens).
PLUS one of the things that i always liked about the show was the way it adopted so many of the formal devices of 'regular' cop shows, right down to the little time/place titles in the corner, but always weird. mulder and scully as regular civilians means you lose all that--the interviewing and clue-searching and everything. and i hate to say it but having them together as a couple makes the dynamic even less interesting.
but all that being said--its really not bad. duchovny and anderson are both really terrific (anderson is still hella blappable btw), its well-written (or well-written enough), connolly is pretty good, it moves quickly enough, etc. and its sort of nice to see mulder and scully again. but i guess in the end it just sort of feels like a missed opportunity--not wasted, just not really what i was hoping for.

It sort of felt like an extended episode of L&O: SVU or Without A Trace or something. Rather underwhelming. But, yes, nice to be back in their company for 90-odd minutes. Did you stay for the odd aerial shot of the rowing boat close to the end of the credits?

this movie is great. way better than batman. slow and nicely acted and kind of thoughtful. not too loud and of an appropriate length. certainly the best x-files related anything since season 3.
the reviews don't make any sense to me. ok, so xzibit kind of sucks. most everything else was all well-tended and muted and just... pleasant.
― adam, Friday, 25 July 2008 22:08 (seventeen years ago)
what an odd little movie. it's basically a drama about scully and mulder with a mini-x-file stuffed in there. i didn't hate it, just wish the underlying story wasn't so...slight.
― latebloomer, Friday, 25 July 2008 22:26 (seventeen years ago)
i'm more puzzled than disappointed, to be honest.
― latebloomer, Friday, 25 July 2008 22:35 (seventeen years ago)
not about the movie itself, just that they went with this to continue the series. i mean, there's no way this is gonna make any money.
― latebloomer, Friday, 25 July 2008 22:43 (seventeen years ago)
i think thats partly what i mean by 'seems so small'--ive been thinking all day about the difference between what i expect from tv shows (or at least what i expect from shit i see on tv) and what i expect from movies, and, in particular, what i expect from stuff that makes the 'leap' from one to the other. like, part of my disappointment is predicated (i guess) on an expectation that moving from tv to movie means that the scope of everything will be widened--larger cast, bigger story, bigger thrills, etc. and thats maybe an unfair expectation! but this certainly doesnt deliver--cast is the same size more or less, story is small (maybe smaller than a lot of episodes of the tv show), "thrills" (not that this is what i should be expecting but cmon its the x files) are barely there. so like i said, as an extended tv movie or something i think i would have felt a lot differently, because it would have met my expectations for what i see on my TV. but as a movie-movie it gave me blue balls.
― max, Friday, 25 July 2008 22:49 (seventeen years ago)
i guess i just mean, 'is it fair for me to expect/demand different things from what i see on tv and what i see in the theaters?' especially given how blurred the two have gotten over the last decade or so
― max, Friday, 25 July 2008 22:53 (seventeen years ago)
but honestly i think of all the places for me to expect (and demand!) different things from a movie-going experience than from a television experience, a tv show being made into a movie is one of them, if for no other reason that for the movie to justify its existence as a movie
― max, Friday, 25 July 2008 22:56 (seventeen years ago)
i think you're right to expect that shit
― s1ocki, Saturday, 26 July 2008 00:28 (seventeen years ago)
otherwise what is the point
also you're paying more $$$ so you wanna see a return on that
Kind of like Fight the Future, except despite all that I think people there wanted more of an x-files episode
― robertwolf8080, Saturday, 26 July 2008 02:35 (seventeen years ago)
this movie was so much better than I thought it would be - Slate reviewer complains that it "takes itself too seriously" but I have no idea what they're talking about; it's packed with jokes, especially two slashfic shout-outs that're hilarious, and it's not conspiracy-related, so it's really like one of the good standalone episodes
first 15 minutes are clumsy & awkward and then it's good if you liked X-Files, is my take
― J0hn D., Saturday, 26 July 2008 03:59 (seventeen years ago)
I think the smallness of the movie was 1) its strength and 2) a little deceptive
― J0hn D., Saturday, 26 July 2008 04:03 (seventeen years ago)
Although I can and do watch episodes on Sci-Fi Channel (and sometimes others) most any late night (the stand-alones come from a tradition that includes Carter's cited starting point, Kolchak--but doom looms and moves like a boom mic, and a black copter rotor in some of the mythology eps, and there's always Cancer Man, who even got his own quasi-stand-alone origin ep, as the real Lone Gunman, collecting rejection slips from editors, a secret success and secret failure--until...)

There's a decent tv episode of the series somewhere in this film - the mad Russian scientists, creepy animal experimentation, finding body parts of the 'victim,' the is-he-or-isn't-he seeing things priest. But it ruined by a laughable (and I mean laugh-out-loud-in-the-theater laughable) medical subplot with Dr. Scully and pounds of forced exposition about the status of their relationship. To make it worse the writers get very lazy in the last 1/4 of the film allowing a multitude of unbelievable coincidences and dumb decisions to guide the plot towards conclusion. Enjoy what you can, based on the less than 1/2 filled theater I saw it in last night this is the end of the line. Two surveyors showed up after the film with blue questionaires that seemed to be testing for a straight-to-DVD market (as well as the effectiveness of the terrible previews before the show).
― zaxxon25, Saturday, 26 July 2008 15:17 (seventeen years ago)
haven't seen it yet but I have to assume the 'small scale' was done because carter didn't feel (and neither did anyone else) that the "big scale" movie did well. and it didn't. but he's hinting at doing a third movie in a few years to finish everything off which sounds "big", only if this one does well. it doesn't sound like this one will though, which is too bad, maybe. I don't really care though.
I'm waiting for dvd for this one, not worth the babysitting money.
― akm, Saturday, 26 July 2008 15:22 (seventeen years ago)
Two surveyors showed up after the film with blue questionaires that seemed to be testing for a straight-to-DVD market
actually i would have no complaints about the series continuing as direct-to-dvd movies. this is the kind of film that would perfect for that format.

No one in Hollywood, least of all Fox, really expected the TV series-based movie sequel, The X-Files 2: I Want To Believe, to wow at the box office after a decade since the first installment came out. Still, rival studios thought the pic could make high teens/low 20s since the gangs all there: Chris Carter, David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson. Instead the 4th place sci-fi pic underperformed by a wide margin after opening to only $4 million Friday from 3,185 plays and probably only an $10 million weekend.

Oakland director Ryan Coogler, hot off a record 16 Oscar nominations for “Sinners,” has been confirmed to write and direct the pilot episode of “The X-Files” reboot greenlit by Hulu. Danielle Deadwyler, known for roles in “Till” and “The Piano Lesson,” has been named the show’s co-lead. Chris Carter, the original show’s producer, is onboard as executive producer.
