I think there must have been hallucinogens in the brown shirt.

My mother (no doubt copying her mother before her, yadda yadda yadda) always says "Oooh, Storms at sea!" whenever she sees any seagulls inland. She made the mistake of saying this to one of her fellow librarians at her workplace who was from Grenada, who said that it showed how crap the British weather was because there were always seagulls on the school playing field behind the library.

In London, ALWAYS find the gulls in Exmouth Market and in Primrose Hill. I think seagulls = gentrifying neighbourhood.

aren't seagulls considered a pest more than 2 miles inland (i.e. you can shoot them)? or is it the other way around...

michael, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

wot, they can shoot you?

MarkH, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

no. smartarse!

Seagulls are fuckin disgusting. God they're almost as bad as pigeons. I can't stand either of them. In fact I think I hate all birds. But mainly pigeons, seagulls, and crows, in that order. ugh...repulsive.

Seagulls calling, one of my favourite sounds. Hearing them inland makes you feel (temporarily) as though you have escaped to somewhere fresher and wilder.

Seagull cries = purty. Perhaps unsurprisingly, I sympathize greatly with Tolkien's portrayal of such cries in the various writings...

I hate seagulls, I have a very good reason. It's supposed to be good luck. But, lets just say that I walk to work with my umbrella up, regardless of whether it is raining or not. :(

seagulls = shit scary. inland, at the sea side, wherever.

ambrose, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm still surprised when I see 'em around NYC. I forget there's an ocean round here.

bnw, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

how can you hate pigeons, seagulls, and crows??

ethan, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Pigeons are FILTHY NASTY FLYING RATS. I would love to smite them all.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

they are inland = they are bees

mark s, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Cos they're disgusting.

Crows are vicious...I've seen them attacking Magpies (pecking them to death).

I remember once being on a train and going past a rubbish tip which had loads of seagulls flying around and I thought how sad it was for the seagulls because they were living on tonnes of stinking rubbish when they could be living in a quiet seaside town eating chips fed to them by excited (and/or terrified) children.

But then I thought that the seagulls don't even know that such a life could exist, so they wouldn't feel like they were missing out on anything and so I stopped feeling sad.

(ha ha - extra comedy twist: the train I was on was going TO THE SEASIDE!)

Hmm I've never even thought about it as being unusual before, but the great lakes have seagulls. Thousands of miles 'inland', Toronto has tons of them. I guess that's sort of cool.

Kim, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yes and as I recall the state bird of Utah is the Californian seagull.

MarkH, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

seagulls inland = political statement from the British fishing industry.
