"In global terms..." the average person is probably chinese and most of us on this board are therefore statistical abnormalities.

calumy (rip van wanko), Friday, 25 January 2019 17:19 (seven years ago)

can we write in inheritance prospects or is that in poor taste/an invite to emotional wreckage

topical mlady (darraghmac), Friday, 25 January 2019 17:26 (seven years ago)

Life expectancy is quite high these days and will no doubt continue to rise for a while longer so I wouldn't count on it (o'ermuch).

i think inheritance prospects are fair game.

i am perennially broke, and have around $1500 credit card debt, but no other debt. but as apparently the median household income in vancouver is something ridiculously low like $76k, and with my household income being above that, I'm not one of the poorer people around.

as things stand i am going to inherit a few flats in the east end of glasgow from my uncle, and perhaps a flat and half a house from my parents - they may have to sell one or both to fund their retirement if they live long enough, so basically hoping not to inherit these things tbh. i will never own property any other way

haven't/wont inherit anything

have a vg pension waiting for me

as of next month so does she

we won't starve, will travel between now and then, prob could buy an acceptable property at some stage post next crash

topical mlady (darraghmac), Friday, 25 January 2019 17:47 (seven years ago)

i have an ok pension coming to me provided i work where i am for the next 30 years

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Friday, 25 January 2019 17:49 (seven years ago)

Median household income in Montreal is higher than in Vancouver and the cost of living is lower as well.

pomenitul, Friday, 25 January 2019 17:50 (seven years ago)

I'm well aware ;_;

don't speak a word of french, sadly

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Friday, 25 January 2019 17:52 (seven years ago)

I don't feel like wealthy ppl do u jim

not having kids i spose thats a real moneysaver week to week

topical mlady (darraghmac), Friday, 25 January 2019 17:52 (seven years ago)

yeah not having kids is a moneysaver. otoh i absolutely could not afford to have a kid, so i suppose i can definitely say I'm not wealthy

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Friday, 25 January 2019 17:54 (seven years ago)

Rent is almost 50% cheaper on average. And French is fairly similar to English in the grand scheme of languages (nor are you expected to master it, for that matter). Just sayin'.

pomenitul, Friday, 25 January 2019 17:55 (seven years ago)

my line of work is office flunky in the public sector and i feel like i probably would need decent french to do that there. we've had this discussion on ilx before though - a few people say you absolutely need to speak french to do that kind of work in montreal, one or two people disagree is usually how it goes.

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Friday, 25 January 2019 17:57 (seven years ago)

Ah, I see. I don't know the details, obviously, but my hunch is that you would indeed be required to learn French. It pays off, though, in more ways than one.

pomenitul, Friday, 25 January 2019 17:59 (seven years ago)

Bah, I'm just indulging in a bit of advertising because I'm homesick and the UK is ruining me.

pomenitul, Friday, 25 January 2019 18:00 (seven years ago)

I've been feeling like "yes" lately. Is it a gut thing?

Evan, Friday, 25 January 2019 18:01 (seven years ago)

Not really, unless we leave the national/international divide up to the person responding.

pomenitul, Friday, 25 January 2019 18:04 (seven years ago)

My wife and I live very modestly. We have a secure income that covers all our basic needs. We have a fair chunk of savings, too.

When I totaled up our expenses at year's end we spend by far the largest chunk of our income on insurance: medical, auto and fire. At about $20K, insurance comprises well over double the amount of the next nearest category: food, at about $8K. We have no mortgage, but our property tax is about $5K. Utilities run about $5K. Nothing else runs past $2.5K, including transportation, travel, out of pocket medical expenses, home upkeep, and a few more categories I keep track of.

I realize that this may sound like luxury to many ilxors, which is my real point. It is luxury. I steadfastly tell people we are rich, because by any measure that makes sense to me, we are. And part of our current riches is our both having been poor and knowing when we're well off.

fair enough! i would absolutely love to live in montreal and I'm not against learning french - in fact i would like to learn it - but i just know it will take me quite a while to do so. i studied spanish in high school and university and grew up with spanish being spoken around me intermittently and all in all to be almost fluent took me about a decade, i can probably expect to speak french well in 2040 if i start now

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Friday, 25 January 2019 18:10 (seven years ago)

Oh well if you already speak Spanish, you've got a massive head start. All the more reason to go for it!

pomenitul, Friday, 25 January 2019 18:11 (seven years ago)

Kind of my point! In regards to Aimless's last couple of sentences.
