Oh I do this often, even midsentence forgetting what my sentence was about, but I never use this phrase or say, "I forgot what I was going to say." Consequently, a good fifth of my conversation consist of long-seeming pauses while I stare sharply away from the person with whom I am talking. I think this is jarring to people I am meeting for the first time.
