Anticipate forgetting Forgetting Sarah Marshall

In which Jason Segal is naked, Mila Kunis works in Hawaii, and Veronica Mars gets it on with Russell Brand.

Or: From the producers of The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up comes a comic look at one guy’s arduous quest to grow up and get over the heartbreak of being dumped—if he can only make himself start Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Struggling musician Peter Bretter (Jason Segel, Knocked Up, How I Met Your Mother) has spent six years idolizing his girlfriend, television star Sarah Marshall (Kristen Bell, Veronica Mars). He’s the guy left holding her purse in paparazzi photos and accidentally omitted from acceptance award speeches. But his world is rocked when she dumps him and Peter finds himself alone. After an unsuccessful bout of womanizing and an on-the-job nervous breakdown, he sees that not having Sarah may just ruin his life. To clear his head, Peter takes an impulsive trip to Oahu, where he is confronted by his worst nightmare: his ex and her tragically hip new British-rocker boyfriend, Aldous (Russell Brand), are sharing his hotel. But as he torments himself with the reality of Sarah’s new life, he finds relief in a flirtation with Rachel (Mila Kunis), a beautiful resort employee whose laid-back approach tempts him to rejoin the world. He also finds relief in several hundred embarrassing, fruity cocktails. For anyone who has ever had their heart ripped out and cut into a billion pieces comes a hilarious, heartfelt look at relationships—featuring Paul Rudd, Jonah Hill, Bill Hader and Jack McBrayer. Part romantic comedy, part disaster film, Forgetting Sarah Marshall is the world’s first romantic disaster comedy.

It's all about Lindsey Weir dumping him irl.

Nicole, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 00:45 (eighteen years ago)

been looking forward to this since Jason Segel was always one of my favorite dudes out of that whole crew. trailer doesn't look great (looks like Kristen Bell might have a really generic love interest part that's kind of a waste of her abilities), but i still wanna see it.

Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 04:06 (eighteen years ago)

waiting patiently for a red band trailer (although that little gag at the end was surprisingly risqué for a green band)

this was really funny!

s1ocki, Thursday, 17 April 2008 02:32 (seventeen years ago)

i liked it!

s1ocki, Thursday, 17 April 2008 02:32 (seventeen years ago)

rank w/ 40yrold, superbad, knocked up, heavyweights in terms of funny and how good it is

balls, Thursday, 17 April 2008 02:35 (seventeen years ago)

i would say it's hovering just below superbad & knocked up, both which i liked a lot. it's there with 40yr old.

segel is really winning. some very good jokes. billy baldwin basically plays david caruso. the ladies are cute and charming. hawaii looks nice.

there's other good stuff but i don't want to ruin some surprises.

i dug it!

s1ocki, Thursday, 17 April 2008 02:39 (seventeen years ago)

Do we get any songs from Russell Brand's character?

slocki you ever seen heavyweights? underrated, good stuff

so i'm happy japatow made another good one. plz to let pineapple express be good!

s1ocki, Thursday, 17 April 2008 02:41 (seventeen years ago)

ya and they are pretty funny. xp

Haha, nice.

this was obv way better than walk hard.

I so wanted to hope for that film. Anyway, Drillbit Taylor oh wait.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 17 April 2008 02:41 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i watched the first few minutes of walk hard in a 'at the very least i will laff. at the very least this film will provide me that pleasure' thought and no, it was unbearable like a insanely long snl sketch that just never goes over. couldn't finish it, and this was in a weekend i could finish pirates/spidey/shrek 3 (ftr: spidey3>pirates3>>>>>>>>>>>>>shrek3).

heavyweights is a kidsflick apatow wrote in the 90s during or immediately after larry sanders, it's about a fat camp. ben stiller plays his character from dodgeball in it only funny, paul feig is in it, jeffrey tambor, that cute blonde that hank married on larry sanders and she ended up on vip and i haven't seen her anywhere else is in it, alot of kids that ended up w/ small roles on undeclared are in it. it's enjoyable, has 'heart' of course. effectively heavyweights : salute yr shorts :: superbad : losin' it.

balls, Thursday, 17 April 2008 02:50 (seventeen years ago)

Yes, it was pretty good. Less funny overall than Knocked Up but with considerably better characterization, at least for the leads.

DANGER!!! Yeah he was so good in this.

Agreed about Veronica Mars - I was impressed that they gave her a decent shake. Most of these (slightly misogynist, male wish fulfillment romantic comedy) movies just have ridiculous cartoon villains with no redeeming value at all, but they go to lengths to show when her and Segel's relationship was good and showed some hints and times when his character dropped the ball.

Nhex, Wednesday, 29 April 2009 22:08 (sixteen years ago)

I had totally forgotten about this movie until this thread got bumped.

totally otm. sometimes i wonder if apatow crits have ever seen the other kinds of comedies that get made out there.

s1ocki, Wednesday, 29 April 2009 22:13 (sixteen years ago)

maybe i'm not giving it enough credit but when the ending for segel's character is hooking up w/hot girl who likes his weird puppet shit...and is maybe going back to school :))) i feel like it does indicate a certain mean-spiritedness to have veronica mars' ending to be "whoa i couldnt get it up for u...because i should be with that 70s show :0, also your tv show is dumb and gay" - she does get that one good scene but it felt kind of tacked on to me in the context of the rest of the movie

i really don't think you can see the sarah marshall character as sympathetic, unless you're a douche. She's a horrible, self-centred star-fucker and our hero's realisation of this resolves the film. Anyone saying "oh why didn't he stay with Veronica Mars?" at the end of the film is an idiot.

Suggesteban Cambiasso (jim), Wednesday, 29 April 2009 22:30 (sixteen years ago)

s1ocki, Wednesday, 29 April 2009 22:41 (sixteen years ago)

i dunno, i just don't find her sympathetic, cheats on Peter for a year, leaves him for a famous musician, realises that Aldous will sleep with anything he bumps in to and falls out with him, then decides to try and go back with the dude that she cuckolded. She's a total bitch.

haha I'm not saying "WAU WHAT AN AMAZING PORTRAYAL OF A SAD FAN IN FSS" or anything, I am being super nerdy about continuity/consistency

like, Jonah is a pretty distinctive-looking dude so playing two separate ppl in the same universe that both run into Russell Brand's character kind of makes me go "they should have just had his original character give up on his demo, clean up his act and go into A&R"
