Will You Hire Me? A Thread for Job-Seekers

Okay, so it has been done before, but since most of those threads are rather old, I thought I'd start a new one.

I just graduated from college with a degree in Writing. I have experience doing legal research (I'm published in legal journals), media writing, media/radio management, and talent-seeking/booking. I'm living in the Cleveland/Akron metro area, at least for the next 6-10 months.

I am fucking desperate. I have $50 in my bank account, and I don't have any credit cards. They're going to turn off my heat soon. I steal cheese and pre-packaged meat and bread in order to survive. I haven't eaten vegetables (*other than beans) with a meal in over three weeks.

What the fuck does it take, guys? Though I'd like to stay here until June, at least-- I have a boyfriend who is still in school-- I'm thinking of relocating. Or doing solo jack-off shoots for the internet. Or worse.

I literally have never been so panicked in my entire life. Help.

believe me, you'll ride it out –– i've been in your boat for six years

remy bean, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 20:27 (eighteen years ago)

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 20:28 (eighteen years ago)

do you have employment agencies for temporary work in your area? doing anything at all, even low-grade filing and shit is still better than stealing food and starving and panicking.

ailsa, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 20:30 (eighteen years ago)

i have had nothing but horrid experience with temp agencies. it may come to that, but... i'm sort of holding out for another couple days until it does.

that and mr que, the last time i applied at a starbucks, they said i was too overqualified.

the table is the table, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 20:32 (eighteen years ago)

dude don't put your degree(s) on there when you apply, especially for some of these entry level jobs.

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 20:33 (eighteen years ago)

Ach table, I feel you - I'm in a similar boat right now (though lucky to at least have a bf with a job who can support us through this mess so we dont end up on the street).

I'm also looking for work but all the mongrels on here already know this, so if they know anyone I can pass my CV to for IT/creative layout admin type work...

Trayce, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 20:33 (eighteen years ago)

I'm in the same boat. I sort of kind of have a job maybe lined up, but they're dragging ass and it's been over a month since i interviewed.

Gukbe, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 20:35 (eighteen years ago)

that and believe it or not, i just checked the starbucks site, and they are hiring at only one location that is much too far away.

the table is the table, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 20:36 (eighteen years ago)

i might just have to wax off all the chest hair and do the jack-off shoot.

the table is the table, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 20:40 (eighteen years ago)

never did i think i would say that.

the table is the table, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 20:40 (eighteen years ago)

you can wash dishes. how many applications do you have out? or are you too busy stealing food?

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 20:41 (eighteen years ago)

remy should change his logon to TROOPER

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 20:43 (eighteen years ago)

I had heard michigan was in serious recession already (lol for like three decades now right) but it doesn't surprise me that ohio is as well. relocating is hard though.

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 20:44 (eighteen years ago)

you think they'll hire a white kid like me when they can hire one of the many mexicans and dominicans up here for much less? you've gotta be kiddin.

(and i know yr just trying to help, i'm just...well, panicky)

the table is the table, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 20:46 (eighteen years ago)

table, i sent you a webmail.

remy bean, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 20:46 (eighteen years ago)

remy will be your TROOPER MENTOR

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 20:47 (eighteen years ago)

SUPER TROOPER

remy bean, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 20:48 (eighteen years ago)

you can wash dishes. how many applications do you have out? or are you too busy stealing food?

No, he's busy reading your lousy messages. Dude, WTF, he's panicking. He's scared. It ain't so easy, y'know.

stevienixed, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 20:51 (eighteen years ago)

Nor is it easy to convert HTML. Harumph.

stevienixed, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 20:52 (eighteen years ago)

he's being a pussy.

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 20:52 (eighteen years ago)

Easy to say that from where you're sitting, dude. Your fridge is full and your bank account isn't in the red. Sure, he'll do fine - find a job - but in the meantime he's freaking out. Understandable because *when* will he find a job. Table, just keep sending those applications.

stevienixed, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 20:55 (eighteen years ago)

i'm lucky to even have a job though is the thing.

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 20:56 (eighteen years ago)

if you're in a position to knock back some temporary work (easiest work to get out of if you hate it, btw, just tell your recruiter it sucks and you'd like something else please - even sticking something out for ONE DAY will give you enough money to eat), you can't be panicking all that much. Presumably you've tried bars and restaurants and local shops and whatever?

(aren't vegetables easier to steal, incidentally, just stick a couple of items in yr pockets as you rummage around a market stall. not that i'm condoning stealing, but if you're going to nick stuff and turn your nose up at temporary work, at least nick edible stuff!)

ailsa, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 21:02 (eighteen years ago)

also, agree with mr que about being economical with the truth to get a job. no-one at starbucks/yr local bar will give a flying one about your academic prowess, so don't tell them. it's not like you're blagging your way into a profession with fake qualifications or anything.

ailsa, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 21:07 (eighteen years ago)

i'm not turning my nose up at temporary work, just temp agencies. and that is probably going to end as of tomorrow-- the turning up of my nose, that is.

i have NO retail or restaurant/bar experience. none. i've worked as a camp counselor, a filing clerk, a legal research assistant, a radio station manager, a concert booker, and a music journalist.

in other words, most places like bars or restaurants have no use for someone like me. i know from experience applying to them.

the table is the table, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 21:07 (eighteen years ago)

is there a cleveland temp agency/legal services temp agency

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 21:08 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, already looking into them.

the table is the table, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

Is there some factory where they spit out girls who work at temp agencies? I swear to god they all seem to come from the same bitchy mold. Good luck, Table, I hope you get a job soon!

stevienixed, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 21:10 (eighteen years ago)

i have NO retail or restaurant/bar experience. none.

so lie. seriously.

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

i am tired of the computer screen for now, tho. i believe i shall roll a cigarette and smoke it in the snow and ponder the fucking horrific state of the job market.

the table is the table, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

lie! it is not hard to carry a plate to a table and smile at a customer, and the worst they will do is sack you if you are irredeemably crap at it, by which time you'll have made a wee bit of money and bought yourself some time.

temp agencies -> temp work. necessary evil if you want short-term money. no-one likes them, but they are a portal to money.

xpost

ailsa, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, i might just do the lying thing for those sorts of jobs.

the table is the table, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 21:12 (eighteen years ago)

ailsa, i dunno. i have had bad luck with temp agencies not calling back.

remy bean, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 21:12 (eighteen years ago)

and yes, i'm just going to suck it up abd submit the app to the temp agencies i found now.

fucking kelly girls, man.

(also, remy is kind of on the mark there)

the table is the table, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 21:12 (eighteen years ago)

have you made finding a job your full-time job right now? b/c that's pretty much what needs to happen if you want something that has to do with your past experience and contribute to getting jobs you want in future. also, like, tell EVERYONE you know that you're looking for a job, mention it all the time, seriously, to everyone everywhere, and something will appear - see everything as a potential for work and work will happen

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 21:15 (eighteen years ago)

My bf mused the other day that he and I should start a porn webcam site.

I'm still not sure how joking he was.

Trayce, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 21:15 (eighteen years ago)

he was joking

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 21:15 (eighteen years ago)

rrobyn OTM - i was focussing on the short-term "get yourself some money" strategy, which you can couple in with putting yourself about in terms of a longer game.

be as in-your-face as you can with agencies, they will give you work just to get you off their case. Act really keen and keep reminding them you exist. they will find you something then - they work on commission so it's in their interest to get you earning if they think you can do them a favour.

ailsa, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 21:18 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not sure this thread is all that useful as a proper job seeking thread now anyway what with the admittance of food theft and whatnot :(

Trayce, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 21:20 (eighteen years ago)

all right, good advice.

and rrrobyn, finding the job is basically my full-time job. i'd say perhaps the only other thing i do with my time is write and listen to music, which i do while i'm trying to find the job. and the writing sort of has to do with what i want to do, anyway.

the table is the table, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 21:22 (eighteen years ago)

also, work in a restaurant and they actually GIVE you food rather than you having to steal it.

(yes, don't apply under the name "the table is the table" in case they google you!)

ailsa, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 21:23 (eighteen years ago)

oh cmon, trayce, this isn't my primary email address and no one would ever know that it's me.

except elan, and perhaps the fags.

the table is the table, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 21:23 (eighteen years ago)

okay, now i really need that cig.

bye for now, will be back on and scouring the rest of the internet later this evening.

Sorry, wasn't trying to be a wet blanket :( I just figured if someone wanted to contact you directly from this thread... anyway good luck finding work man :)

Trayce, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 21:26 (eighteen years ago)

this thread kind of makes me angry

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 21:26 (eighteen years ago)

and it's not anger nec directed at you

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 21:27 (eighteen years ago)

part of it is that it's that where i live the job market for non-fully-bilingual people is v small and i managed to get a job and many people i know who hardly speak french are able to make a living, so i see getting some kind of job any job in a city where you only have to speak english, and not even nec that well, as five hundred times easier to do, but i am also optimistic abt many things and confident in my ability to find work. but i mean i don't know cleveland at all.

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 21:36 (eighteen years ago)

I was looking at a job in Paris where I wouldn't need more than conversational french. Software is weird.

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 21:41 (eighteen years ago)

i have a feeling that you could get a job anywhere, j

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 21:45 (eighteen years ago)

can i put out an alert now? i will need a job in either june or late august/september, something in arts management. my specialties are marketing and public relations but i will perhaps have a company management/administrative fellowship over the summer for added experience. part time ok for job starting in sept. must be in nyc because i will be finishing up my last yr of grad school, though.

don't worry dude, i won't out your criminal life. i wish i could help you find a job. my first instinct is always drug dealing but i think that's kind of a dead end.

elan, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

now where do you want me to put this tibia?

elan, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

I've spent the last two nights (about 12 hours in total) helping a mate draw out her CV, fuck is that some hard work in itself. Luckily I recently attended a work seekers workshop which gave me heaps of good advice, as I'm looking for new employment soon myself - in the arts!

so i'll be coming back to this thread regularly, lucky you.
