Taking a Contemporary Art course where one of the requirements is "art responses," something must be produced (written doesn't count) that in some way responds to something we've been covering.
Instructor will essentially accept anything, so I'ma have fun with it. Me & the gf are putting me in a dress & making vag-shaped cookies for a 1950s Good Housekeeping-style fake ad.
After reading "Minimalism and the Rhetoric of Power" over the weekend I kinda think the Minimalists were jerks. Tony Smith's famous piece Die is sorta a cornerstone, so I wanna respond to it. MSPaint sketch of what it might look like:
http://xs223.xs.to/xs223/08043/die413.png
Would it be too obvious to call it "Blackbird"?
What should I do to respond to "Performance Art"? "Appropriation Art?" "Street Art?" "Loser Art/Abject Art/Pathetic Aesthetic?" "Celebrity and Commodification?"

Now I'm to class, so forgive me for not responding to any responses right away.

sorry, HOOS, that first post was narky. i got nothing to contribute, and will now skulk off feeling ashamed.
― darraghmac, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 16:54 (eighteen years ago)
obv. for "appropriation art" you should steal a classmates assignment and present it as your own.
― John Justen, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 16:56 (eighteen years ago)
xps yeah that was kind of weak.
too bad you don't like minimalism tho! do you think the art is actually bad, or were the minimalists jerks in some concrete way?

After watching a program about Donald Judd on the Ovation channel just the other day, I'm almost excited to agree with anyone that the minimalists were jerks.
And from Wikipedia: Donald Clarence Judd (June 3, 1928 - February 12, 1994) was a minimalist artist (a term he stridently disavowed)
good grief...

ok so i did "die exploded" viz above. it's the six squares between two sheets of clear contact paper.
here is my pretensious-as-fuck "artist's statement" that the assignment dictates has to come with the piece:
This piece, which I have titled Die, Exploded (Open Letter to Tony Smith et al), has an immediate reference point in Tony Smith's seminal Die, but Die, Exploded is intended as a response to and critique of the Minimalist aesthetic more generally. Reading Anna C. Chave's essay “Minimalism and the Rhetoric of Power” left me rather dead-set against the Minimalists. The smug disingenuousness and coy phallocentrism evident in work like Dan Flavin's The Diagonal of May 25, 1963, for example, left a bad taste in my mouth. I felt a need to issue a rejoinder.
This piece imagines that Smith's steel box has been exploded from within, and that the six sides which form the cube have spread out in the formation suspended. The “multiple valences” (to borrow from Chave) of this particular formation are left to the viewer to determine, but I would hope that one particular meaning is clear and shouldn't require being spelled out. Like the Zen koans of old, think of this statement as merely “the finger pointing at the moon.”
In contrast to Smith, I used lightweight and disposable materials to construct my piece. Unlike most Minimalist work, which seems to suggest a kind of totalitarian, industrial permanence, Die, Exploded makes no claims on permanence and in fact underlines its own disposability. Its size is also a factor in this. Unlike Smith's secretive, closed black box Die Exploded is completely transparent in its construction. Ideally it might be suspended from a ceiling so that it could be viewed from any and all sides.

Judd is a fucking jerk. Hoos plz drive to Marfa & offer a pointed critique to passersby. (I would say "blow his stuff up" but that seems a bit harsh.)
― Abbott, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 03:05 (eighteen years ago)
is "exploded" supposed to be a peener?
― Abbott, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 03:06 (eighteen years ago)
actually the orig intent was for it to be "the finger," and the waaaaaaaay obv "coy phallocentrism" (hur hur) didn't even occur to me until ljag pointed it out!

Got my most recent project back w/grade & comments:
"100! Stunning, really a very impressive project to end the semester with. Stay in touch, I'd like to follow your work!"
I don't know if I feel glad I got one over on the guy or a little bit disappointed that he didn't see right through me. I'd almost been hoping he'd give the lie to the whole "they'll give ANYTHING a good grade in these classes" stereotype and see through my BS and give me an F!
