It doesn't seem to happen w/ mango salsa/chutney though, maybe I'm just allergic to the skins.

Just hold yr mouth open really wide and drop pieces in past yr lips.

That makes it sound like I eat the skins. I don't, I just like carving it up and slurping it out of the skins with a knife while I walk around my yard like Locke on LOST.

I can't touch them unpeeled without getting blisters - terpenes or something in the skin. Too many bites of a raw one can blister my tongue. They are still so good when ripe.

one of my younger brothers has an allergic-type reaction to raw fruits, which may be related to your problem. i think it's an allergy to certain proteins in the skin of raw fruit -- cooking breaks the offending compounds down to the point where they do not cause an allergenic response.

as a result, my bro cannot eat a raw apple without his mouth blistering but he will seriously fuck up a big bowl of applesauce.

my friend is allergic to mangos! it is so sad.

I used to have this, but it's fading as I get older. At least there's one good thing about getting older.

Mangoes are related to the sumac family of plants and their skins contain the same oils that are in poison sumac. Trust me, I'm a nurse.

ate loads of green mangoes in honduras, they're crunchy and very sour and the people i was traveling with thought it was gross that i ate them, but locals did it all the time.

they said all they have are MANILA MANGOES (altaulfo or champagne). boo. this stinks. they are like $50 to order online, too.

altaufos aren't bad, way better than tommy atkins (classic supermarket mango)... but not quite alphonso level tbh.

another variety u can look for that is around this time of year is the kesar, queen of the mangoes

just picked up a box of alphonsos. pretty good! the texture is almost like a...durian

that perfumed smell, that rich and almost spicy (my friend Alexander said “It almost tastes like tea!”) flavour.

have eaten three so far! that distinctive flavor is kinda like tea, though I would say earl grey (so maybe more similar to bergamot oil), and is quite distinct from any mango I've ever had before.

these fuckers are fragrant! my kitchen smells so good. was smelling them on the subway on the way back.

I picked up some small yellow mangos (have no idea what they are officially called) from Whole foods. 4 for $3. Much better than the traditional ones found in your local supermarket.

i'm actually getting a lift to that place on jean talon with my mother, the indian grocer in ndg didn't have any.
