James Redd and the Blecchs, Saturday, 26 January 2008 13:29 (eighteen years ago)

Am I right to assume that anyone who claims to know Esperanto is bullshitting?

The Reverend, Saturday, 26 January 2008 13:41 (eighteen years ago)

Yes.

HI DERE, Saturday, 26 January 2008 13:48 (eighteen years ago)

Thought so.

Am I right to assume that anyone who claims to know Esperanto is bullshitting?

Really? There's only a million or two speakers of Esperanto in the world... You'd think there'd be a few on this board.

Also, there are a few on this board. Although I am very rusty. And that's, you know, OK.

Casuistry, Sunday, 27 January 2008 10:58 (eighteen years ago)

A million or two people, including a few on this board, are bullshitting, amirite?

The Reverend, Sunday, 27 January 2008 11:14 (eighteen years ago)

interlingua is a way better artificial language, botw

The Reverend, Sunday, 27 January 2008 11:15 (eighteen years ago)

Are you just trolling or something? What are you even talking about? It's a really easy language to learn; I learned the grammar in like two weeks, and needed maybe two months to pick up enough vocab to have a reasonably fluent conversation with someone.

I'm not advocating that anyone learn it, necessarily (one of the big problems with Esperanto is that Esperantists mostly talk about Esperanto with one another, which... gets old), but it's not that big a deal to have learned it.

When I was 17 I gave a lecture in Esperanto on American Sign Language. I was a particularly nerdy kid, surprise surprise.

I think somebody might think it was BS because they think peeps either don't really know Esperanto but claim they do, or because said peeps aren't man enough to study a real language. Anecdotally it seems that there isn't too much to know, you can learn all the rules in a few weeks and just work on vocabulary, so claims are actually modest. As to the second objection- again, anecdotally- seems like people study natural languages as well as the artificial one. Like this dude, for example. I know for me it is an enjoyable break from all my interminable stalled or slowed language learning projects.

I tried to teach myself Esperanto when I was bored at a summer internship in 1998. I found an online tutorial and was able to build up a pretty good vocabulary within a week (although I don't remember much). As Chris and Ken have pointed out, the rules are super-easy. And it's fairly easy to guess at what a word might be in Esperanto, since a lot of words are constructed based on their relationship to other words. Like "enemy" is the prefix "mal-" plus the word for friend ("amiko") = "malamiko."

jaymc, Monday, 28 January 2008 20:16 (eighteen years ago)

^^^^^^ buncha bullshitters

HI DERE, Monday, 28 January 2008 20:20 (eighteen years ago)

dan perry in 2008 - he seriously gives a shit what any of you will says!!

James Redd and the Blecchs, Monday, 28 January 2008 20:21 (eighteen years ago)

the prefix "mal-"

I should point out that this is used to transform any word into its opposite.

jaymc, Monday, 28 January 2008 20:21 (eighteen years ago)

^_^

HI DERE, Monday, 28 January 2008 20:25 (eighteen years ago)

Parolis esperante Ĉespirito?

James Redd and the Blecchs, Monday, 28 January 2008 22:58 (eighteen years ago)

I mean
Ĉu parolis esperante Ĉespirito?

That "Ĉu" question word was one of the few things Zamenhof took from his native Polish. The word for ball, "pilko," being another.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 12:36 (eighteen years ago)

Voco Protesta is a Japanese crust-core band that claims to sing in Esperanto. They're probably just bullshitting though.

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 12:47 (eighteen years ago)

Sweeeeeeet.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 14:39 (eighteen years ago)

More Esperanto crust-core! (WTH is "crust-core"?)

The Reverend, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 14:40 (eighteen years ago)

I used to like a British band called Esperanto, but they sang in English.

Dankon al Dio, ke hodiaŭ estas vendredo.

Casuistry, Friday, 8 February 2008 19:32 (eighteen years ago)

Or: Dankon al Dio: hodiaŭ estas vendredo!

Casuistry, Friday, 8 February 2008 19:33 (eighteen years ago)

Or something like that. They're two separate clauses; the "dankon" has an implied subject and verb of "mi donas" or something along those lines.
