So the question is, name the most 'tenuously connected to the stated topic at hand' paper you ever wrote for a class.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I wrote a sociology paper on ILE actually. I got an A- with the comments "This is good, but we didn't want you to write about the internet".

I miss doing papers like this! It's hard to be fanciful with an indexing project.

Those of us who have to grade papers are not amused.

My junior year of college I managed to get three of my final projects to be about Real Stories of the Highway Patrol. Erm.. hey, I had a lot of important stuff to say about it!

I used a detailed analysis of kid606's "Straight Outta Compton" to bookend a discussion of Death of a Salesman in Dramaturgy class. I got an A-/B+.

Ian, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hell, I did it too. Used the Brit comedy series "Ab Fab" to detail the horrors of the modeling industry. If I remember right, it was for an English class.

Got a B+. Was suitably chuffed...

Nichole Graham, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha! Well, let's see...I used a quote from the VU's "Femme Fatale" to open a paper on "Der Blaue Engel" once, for a German film class. Hmm...I wrote a paper once that included a reference to Kleenex/Liliput, but that was for a gender studies class, and the professor liked it. Ned, I think you should send that Onion article over to the "Golf Course Management" thread.

Not at my (and Michael Daddino's)

Not at my (and Michael Daddino's)

Not at my (and Michael Daddino's) weird school . Closest I could pull off was a line from a minutemen song used as an epigram for a paper on Dante's Purgatorio.

Colin Meeder, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They didn't teach me no html there, neither.

Colin Meeder, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hilariously I wrote essays trying to get as many New Order song titles in them as possible. Well if they're going to set you boring and easy questiongs you might as well liven them up a bit. NB I did not do this in Spanish Written.

I've written essays on Swedish music and a dissertation on toy advertising! Submitted a video with Action Man, Barbie and Power Rangers ads! I got 75%....Oh and a marketing essay on chocolate, we had to design a promotion, so I copied Man or Astro-man's cardboard cut out UFO from the "UFO's and the Men Who Fly Them" single, and turned into a cardboard frisbie, which would be given away free with Mars multi-packs. I got a B+.

Enlightened in the dark - Sadomasochism as a form of eastern meditation

Queen G, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Once, for an astronomy project, I wrote a four-part piece of computer music loosely based on Kepler's ideas about the harmonies of the planets. I got an A.

Jonnie to thread!

chris, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hello! My dissertation was a comparison between football and morality. I also managed to mention Darth Vader in an essay regarding Names and stuff.

Jonnie, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A guy in a class I was monitoring (avant-garde film) turned in a photocopy of a Patti Smith LP cover with pistol laying on it for an assignment (I don't know the topic, but every one else turned in typed papers).

nickn, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What grade did you give him?

jel --, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If you can tie the philosophy of Boethius into an essay you're bound to get an A+.

maryann, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't know who boethius is, and i don't get A+s.
once i started an essay 3 hours before the absolute deadline of end of year; it was written mostly straight from my head and just looking at the texts - it was a comparison between The Scum Manifesto and The Second Sex! pretty ridiculous but it got me to pass the paper.

elizabeth anne marjorie, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I wrote a paper for a friend ($60) about "The Femme Fatale Archetype in Film Noir and its Influence on the Work of Lou Reed" or some nonsense like that. My friend didn't know naything beyond Walk on the Wild Side but said run with it and I wrote it with copious DFW- style footnotes (cheesy but impresses stupid professors at the crappy school my friend goes to) and WOOHOO an A! I get good grades for someone who doesn't go to school.
