Teenage girl suspected of paying to have mother killed

Police suspect that a 16-year-old Helsinki girl paid a 19-year-old man to kill her mother. On January 16th, a young man rang the doorbell of the 40-year-old woman. He said that he wanted to see the woman's daughter, and was let in. A moment later the woman felt a strong blow to the back of her head and ran to the balcony of her apartment. She managed to close the door behind her and call for help. Through the balcony window she could see that there was another man in the apartment as well.

One of the men had shot the woman with a crossbow - the kind that is used to shoot small game, police say. "Fortunately the arrow hit a hard spot - the back of the woman's head - and only left a bloody wound", said Juha Rautaheimo of the Helsinki police. According to the police the men had intended to knock the woman unconscious and kill her later in some other way. A police officer responding to the call stopped a man near the apartment who had a crossbow in his bag. A crossbow arrow was found on the floor of the woman's apartment.

According to Rautaheimo, the crime had been planned for about two weeks. Police have remanded four men and one woman suspected of participation or complicity in an attempted murder. Police say that the 16-year-old daughter had promised the 19-year-old man a cash reward for the killing. The daughter did not live with the mother at the time of the attack. The man had persuaded two 20-year-old friends to join him. The crime was planned at the Espoo home of a fourth man, who now faces charges of aiding and abetting. The suspects, all native-born Finns, do not have any prior criminal records.

Rautaheimo says that the case is unique in Finnish criminal history, in light of the young age of the daughter. The documents linked with the case have been declared secret for the protection of the victim. The investigation continues, and the deadline for pressing final charges is April 1st.

I know this is kinda horrible, but it also sounds like some B-rate thriller movie plot... I bet the police find out one of the guys was her boyfriend or something, can't imagine a 16-year old having enough cash to hire someone she doesn't even know to do this.

"16-year old"

Tuomas, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 12:43 (eighteen years ago)

what's with the weird bolded first few letters of each paragraph?

ken c, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 12:51 (eighteen years ago)

That's the way the local newspaper prints their news, instead of using subheadings.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 13:09 (eighteen years ago)

Argh! Why!! It's so wrong. It makes me angry just to read it.

ken c, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 13:46 (eighteen years ago)

(not to take anything away from the attempted murder. that's a little shitty too)

ken c, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 13:47 (eighteen years ago)

poor typesetting trumps attempted murder ken

What about the first one which links to a translation page which shows only the words within the link?

Mark G, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 16:44 (eighteen years ago)

I think that's some sort of a mistake - when you click on the policeman's name, you get links to other news where he has appeared.

Helsingin Sanomat is the largest newspaper here, but I guess they don't think their news in English are worth investing that much effort.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

do they print their finnish news in the same way though?

ken c, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 16:51 (eighteen years ago)

Even worse, news readers yell out the first 4-5 words of every sentence.

StanM, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 16:52 (eighteen years ago)

because surely doing this is extra effort?

ken c, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 16:52 (eighteen years ago)

It's so metal. I'll bet at least half the boys have long hair.

How like ILX to have 11 comments on the formatting of the page before an actual comment on the news story.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

I know the details are pretty horrible, but I gotta say that I wish I had a "surviving a crossbow shot to the back of the head" story.

Simon H., Tuesday, 29 January 2008 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

really, you don't.

remy bean, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

I'd rather that than a "I once formatted a newstory like a retard" story

ken c, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 19:26 (eighteen years ago)

Something is srsly wrong with that crossbow seeing as how they were designed to propel missiles through armor an' shit.

Laurel, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 19:28 (eighteen years ago)

or the soft and yielding flesh of finnish reindeer

remy bean, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 19:30 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think modern day crossbows are built to deal with armour so much.

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 19:31 (eighteen years ago)

Crossbow really isn't a traditional weapon here at all.

gff, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 19:37 (eighteen years ago)

isn't there a part in Kalevala about a magical crossbow, Tuomas?

remy bean, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 19:37 (eighteen years ago)

It's a mistranslation, the original word is actually closer to "peach melba".

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 19:39 (eighteen years ago)

maybe the girl thought her mom was Väinämöinen

remy bean, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 19:39 (eighteen years ago)

i blame the glorification of U.S. crossbow culture for this tragic formatting.
